Mind Control Noses Out Hot Rod Charlie in Salvator Mile Thriller

OCEANPORT, NJ–It was an unseasonably cool and windy June day at the Jersey Shore for Monmouth Park's GIII Salvator Mile S. and the match up on display for Saturday's marquee race was just as unusual as the weather. It is not often the Salvator Mile attracts a pair of Grade I winners, but that is exactly what the Monmouth Park fans were treated to Saturday with Mind Control (Stay Thirsty) meeting Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) for the first time. And what a treat it was!

GI Pennsylvania Derby hero Hot Rod Charlie, who was making his first start since the finishing second in the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 26, was hammered down to 1-5 favoritism. Meanwhile, his older, more experienced rival was a gift at 2-1.

With no other speed signed on, Hall of Famer John Velazquez made the astute decision to send the versatile Mind Control straight to the front from his rail draw. Hot Rod Charlie was away a breath slow beneath Mike Smith from post three and moved up to track his older foe from second through a :23.60 first quarter. Mind Control was still well within himself when Hot Rod Charlie turned up the heat as the half went up in :46.66.

Velazquez was still sitting chilly as Hot Rod Charlie and Smith drew even with Mind Control at the quarter-pole and the stage was set. The top two betting choices were well clear of the rest of the field as they battled stride-for-stride down the lane. Hot Rod Charlie even headed Mind Control halfway home–much to the delight of his enthusiastic group of owners cheering loudly at the wire–but his gutsy elder relishes a dog fight. The Red Oak team was equally passionate with their cheers as Mind Control dug in on the fence, determinedly forging past Hot Rod Charlie in the final strides to win by a head. It was 6 1/4 lengths back to GI Maker's Mark Mile winner Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) in third.

“Todd [Pletcher] said exactly what just happened, put him on the lead and try to steal it,”said Anthony Sciametta, Pletcher's Monmouth-based assistant. “He is a nice horse. He tries all the time. I actually thought he was beat there for a minute, but he came back. He likes Johnny.”

“My thought was, there wasn't much speed in the race, so I wanted to come out of there running and get a good position,” Velazquez said. “Todd texted Anthony and said, 'Tell Johnny to do what he needs to do.' I said, 'Thank you, that's what I needed to know.' He had the same thought as me. When he is on, he is a fighter. He is really tough to go by. Sometimes they go in front of him and he comes back at it. [Hot Rod Charlie] had almost half a neck in front of him and Mind Control came back at him.”

“He is a proven commodity,” said Red Oak's Rick Sacco. “He always brings his game and we are pleased to be back on our home turf. We grew up around here and it is such a historic race. We are pleased to be here and win it. We are proud of the horse.”

As for what's next, Sacco said, “There is nothing on the horizon right now. We will ship him back to Belmont and then get him to Saratoga and pick something out.”

As for the beaten favorite, trainer Doug O'Neill said, “We are obviously disappointed but we're just so proud of him getting back to the races. We want to thank Monmouth. They really rolled out the red carpet for us. We're grateful for the day and looking forward to the future.”

“He didn't run badly,” said Smith. “Credit to the winner. He was gallant. My horse fought with him. I thought Mind Control would get the lead over us. He is coming out of a sprint. We got him to stand still in the gate and he did that–he stood still. I kind of missed the break. I think that's what happened to him in Dubai too. That's why he was so far back there.  Ability-wise I know what he is capable of, so that is the reason I am not pleased. I know what he can do and this was not it.”

Winner of the GI Hopeful S. back in 2018 and the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. in 2019 for previous trainer Greg Sacco, Mind Control was transferred to Pletcher in the spring of 2021. He won the GII John A. Nerud S. last July and was fourth next out in Saratoga's GI Forego S. Concluding his season with a win in the Parx Dirt Mile S. in September, the bay kicked off this term with a third in Aqueduct's GI Carter H. Apr. 9 and was a non-factor fifth last time in the May 7 GI Churchill Downs S.

Pedigree Notes:

‘She Broke Well And Nobody Wanted To Go With Us’: Stolen Holiday Romps From Gate To Win Eatontown

Stolen Holiday rebounded from an unplaced finish in her stakes debut last time out by rolling gate to wire for a breakthrough at the Grade 3 level Saturday in the $152,500 Eatontown Stakes t Monmouth Park.

Guided by Jose Lezcano, the 5-year-old War Front mare broke on top and set a comfortable pace– :25.51, :50.61, and 1:14.22 for six furlongs–before opening a two-length lead in early stretch. Roused to maintain her advantage, she continued on strongly to score by one-length from stablemate Vigilantes Way, who tracked from third and rallied gamely to be second-best. Lemista was 2 3/4 lengths back in third and 8-5 favorite Fluffy Socks rallied from last to finish fourth in the field of seven fillies and mares.

Stolen Holiday covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.30 on firm turf and returned $18.40.

“Stolen Holiday is a nice filly,” said Shug McGaughey, who trains the mare for Annette Allen. “Her races this year have all been good. The race in the Beaugay ([G3] at Belmont Park) last time out came up really soft and that's not what she wants. I wouldn't have run her today if it wasn't a good, firm turf.

“She's got speed and the speed horse (in the Eatontown, Por Que No) scratched and Jose Lezcano was smart enough when she broke well to put her on the lead and let her set the fractions. I was very pleased with Vigilante's Way. There was no pace in the race and she just got beat a length. I thought she ran well. I'm pleased for Stolen Holiday's connections. She's a very well-bred filly. This was not unexpected – but I really didn't know what to expect. When they threw up that :25.51 first quarter and :50.61 to the half I thought they would have a hard time beating her.”

Lezcano said he watched her past races to know that she runs well when she is close or in the clear.

“She broke well and nobody wanted to go with us,” he said. “I let her break and she was very comfortable to the half (in :50.61) and when I got to the three-eighths I said 'I have to let her out' and no one was really closing at us. When you are able to get away with a slow half like that you feel comfortable you will have a lot left. She finished very good. She's a very versatile horse. This time she broke clean and when no one else wanted to go I said to myself 'OK, I'll take the lead.' That was the difference in the race.”

Stolen Holiday improved her career line to 4-2-1 from 10 and boosted her lifetime bankroll to $228,990. The bay mare was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale from the Sadler's Wells mare Silk And Scarlet, a Group 2 winner who has produced three Grade 1 or Group 1 winners: Master of Hounds, Eishin Apollon, and Minorette.

Adios Charlie Firster Too Fast for Debutante Foes

Stone Silent, a $410,000 OBSMAR purchase off a speedy :20 2/5 breeze, ran five rivals off their feet in a sharp debut performance in Saturday's Fasig-Tipton Debutante S. at Santa Anita. The 3-1 second choice sped through an opening quarter in :22.08, kicked for home in complete command and never looked back as Kentucky Juvenile S. winner and $390,000 Fasig-Tipton digital sale buyback Tom's Regret ran on to narrow the gap.

“First I'd like to thank the trainer and the owners for the opportunity,” said winning pilot Ramon Vazquez. “I worked her three times in the morning, and I knew she was a nice filly. She broke good and got a good position and she responded really well.”

Asked if he expected to be on the lead, Vazquez said, “I wasn't surprised because she's a first timer and nobody knew that this filly could run.”

Trainer John Sadler added, “I think some of the commentators picked up on the fact that she worked :20 2/5 in the sale, so she's very quick. We were hoping that she went through and could run early because I knew she had a ton of speed.  Ramon was good, he came out and worked her three times and knew her. We hadn't really pressed her hard in the morning, we just got her fit because we knew the speed was in there.

“She'll go into the stake program for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar. We have a couple of other ones coming along behind her, so it's good to have the first one out and get one under our belt.”

The winner's 22-year-old dam has also produced the dams of MGSW Last Judgment (Congrats) and SW/GSP Isolate (Mark Valeski). She produced another Adios Charlie filly last year before returning again to the Ocala Stud resident, who was a $400,000 OBSMAR grad himself.

Headstrong Early, Masen Settles To Capture Belmont’s Poker Stakes In First Graded Score

Juddmonte homebred Masen earned his first graded stakes victory in the $250,000 Poker Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Belmont Park.

Trainer Chad Brown, a four-time Eclipse Award-winner, saddled two 4-year-old sons of Kingman in the one-mile Widener turf test for older horses, including the 1-5 favorite Masen and 7-2 second choice Public Sector, who was third.

Wolfie's Dynaghost, with Luis Saez up, broke well and led the five-horse field through an opening quarter mile in :24.05 over the firm going as Flavien Prat settled a rank Masen into second position.

Masen was traveling well down the backstretch as the Jose Ortiz-piloted Public Sector angled outside of a ground-saving Sanctuary City and two-wide Penalty into a stalking position through a half-mile in :48.26.

Wolfie's Dynaghost led the field into the turn as Prat maneuvered Masen to the outside and into the clear, taking command at the stretch call with Public Sector launching an outside rally and Sanctuary City cutting the corner.

Masen, under right-handed encouragement from Prat, stayed on strong to the wire for a one-length win in a final time of 1:34.16. Wolfie's Dynaghost completed the exacta by a nose over Public Sector, who was a nose better than fourth-place Sanctuary City. Penalty rounded out the order of finish.
The victory marked the fifth stakes win of the meet for Prat.

“He broke well and when I asked him to switch off, it took him a little while,” Prat said. “It was a slow pace, so that didn't help, but after that he switched off nice for me. He has a great turn of foot, so I wasn't so worried about the slow pace. It was only a matter of getting him to switch off. After that, I was fine.”

Masen, a three-time winner at Leopardstown for former conditioner Ger Lyons, finished second by a nose to Shirl's Speight on debut for Brown in the Maker's Mark Mile (G1) in April at Keeneland. He followed last out with a five-length romp in the Seek Again Stakes on May 22 over good going at Belmont in which the pacesetting Wolfie's Dynaghost faded to last of three runners.

Brown said Saturday's winning effort will propel Masen to the $500,000 Fourstardave (G1) August 13 at Saratoga Race Course, which offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in November at Keeneland.

“He ran back just inside a month, which is a little tight for him, but I wanted to get another race between now and the Fourstardave. It worked out,” Brown said. “[He was] a little headstrong off the slow first quarter, but he did settle nicely after that. Flavien indicated that he was pretty much in control from there and just decided when he wanted to take over.”

Brown said he was a little concerned with Masen being headstrong in the opening strides from the gate.

“I didn't want to take too much out of him, having to reposition him to the outside of Wolfie's Dynaghost, who ran a much better race this time and I expected him to. He's a nice horse,” Brown said. “We anticipated a better fight from him today and he gave it to us. Luckily, Masen was able to find a little bit more.”

Klaravich Stables' Public Sector enjoyed a tremendous sophomore season, winning the Grade 2 Hall of Fame and Grade 3 Saranac at Saratoga, along with the Grade 2 Hill Prince at Belmont. He arrived at the Poker from an off-the-board effort in the Turf Classic (G1) in his seasonal debut on May 7 at Churchill Downs.

“[It was] a good regroup race from him after drawing a line through his race at Churchill over a turf course he didn't like,” Brown said. “He needs a little more pace to run at. He just missed second by a nose and was coming steadily. I think he prefers a mile and a sixteenth and a mile and an eighth anyway, which we know. We will build off this and figure out where we're going to go next.”

Wolfie's Dynaghost, with Saez up for the first time, ran back to his solid form when second in the Grade 3 Appleton in April at Gulfstream Park for trainer Tom Albertrani.

“He broke pretty sharp. He made the lead and he was trying until the end,” Saez said. “I think Saratoga will be a better spot for him. The turn out there is short and the track is fast. I think he'll like it there.”

Bred in Great Britain by his owner, Masen is out of the Smart Strike mare Continental Drift, whose dam, Intercontinental, was 2005 champion turf female for Brown's late mentor Bobby Frankel. In addition to Intercontinental, Masen's third dam, blue hen Hasili, produced four other Grade 1 or Group 1 winners for Juddmonte.

Masen banked $137,500 for his Poker victory while improving his record to 9-5-2-1. He returned $2.60.
