$330,680 Jackpot Carryover Into Closing Day Pick 6 At Santa Anita

With no Single Ticket winner in Santa Anita's popular 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot on Saturday, there is a carryover of $330,680 into closing day and track officials expect Sunday's total Rainbow 6 pool, with a mandatory payout, will reach the $3 million mark.

Additionally, Santa Anita will guarantee a $500,000 pool in Sunday's 50 cent Late Pick Five and there will be mandatory payouts in all exotic wagers.

With first post time for an 11-race card on Sunday at 1 p.m., assigned post time for race six, the beginning of the Rainbow 6, is at 3:36 p.m. PT.  With a total of 101 horses entered to run in the Rainbow 6 sequence, average field size stands at 10 runners per race.

A total of three stakes will highlight the closing day card and two of them, the Grade 3, $125,000 San Juan Capistrano, carded as race seven and the Grade 3, $100,000 American, carded as the 11th and final race, are included in the Rainbow 6.  The $100,000 Possibly Perfect has been carded as the fifth race.

The San Juan Capistrano, Santa Anita's traditional closing day feature, has attracted a field of eight 3-year-olds and up and will be contested at a mile and three quarters over the one of a kind Camino Real Hillside Turf Course.

The 83rd running of the American, perhaps the best betting race of the day, attracted a field of 10 at one mile on turf.  It's inaugural running in 1938 at Hollywood Park was won by Bing Crosby's Ligaroti, who would go on later that summer to finish second by nose to Seabiscuit in a roughly run match race at Del Mar.

Nyquist Filly Beats the Boys in Fasig-Tipton Futurity

Absolutely Zero ran to public's confidence, defeating the boys in Saturday's $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity S. at Santa Anita.

The Reddam homebred raced under pressure from the get-go and held a narrow advantage as four of them lined up approaching the top of the stretch. She clearly had something left as they straightened for home and dug down gamely in the stretch to defeat stablemate Tahoma, the first winner for Triple Crown winner Justify, by a measured length. First-time starter Pure Fire, a $315,000 OBSMAR breezer, ran well to finish third.

“She's not the fastest horse out of the gate so today, she broke really well,” winning rider Mario Gutierrez said. “She broke with them, and I tried to maintain my position and find my way to keep her in there, she responded really well.

“She's very gutsy. She definitely is a fighter and showed big improvement. She can only get better. The fact that she's running with the boys, you know that's what is impressive about her right now, she's a really cool girl so I'm happy with her.”

Absolutely Zero delivered a professional victory as the heavy favorite while facing fillies on debut going 4 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita May 21.

The winner's dam How About Zero, a two-time stakes winner for Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill, produced fillies by Pavel in 2021 and 2022.

Private Mission Back To Winning Form In Santa Maria

She's back. Well beaten in her last three starts, Private Mission broke sharply, pressed the early pace, and kicked on through lane in taking the $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes (G2) Saturday at Santa Anita by three-quarters of a length.

Private Mission scored under leading rider Juan Hernandez, who collected his 102nd victory of the Winter/Spring Meet.

Originally trained by the currently suspended Bob Baffert, Sean McCarthy handled the saddling duties Saturday as Baoma Corp.'s 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief got 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.46 on a fast track.

With Lady Mystify going to the front from her rail post under Edwin Maldonado, Private Mission sat second a 1 ½ lengths back midway around the first turn.

One length back at the half mile mark, Private Mission cruised up outside the pacesetter and had a one length edge straightening for home. Never threatened in the final three-sixteenths of a mile, Private Mission was best on the day as recent Grade 2 winner Blue Stripe finished second.

“She broke really sharp and as soon as she saw Lady Mystify in front of me, she relaxed and she was just waiting for me to ask her to go,” said Hernandez, who collected his meet-leading 23rd stakes win . “I'm really happy because I'm doing really well. I just want to thank all the owners and trainers for supporting me. I really appreciate it. I just love to win and ride horses.”

A two-time graded stakes winner last year at age three, Private Mission, who was distanced three starts back in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 6 and soundly beaten in a pair of sprints earlier this meet—the La Brea (G1) on Dec. 26 and the Las Flores (G3) on March 13—was nonetheless off as the 7-5 favorite in a field of six fillies and mares and paid $4.80.

“I watched her break and it was perfect,” said McCarthy. “Private Mission had been training great and full credit to all the crew, Jimmy (Barnes) and everyone. They have done a great job with her and she's come along well. …We passed a race up in New York to stay for this race, which ended up being the right decision. …”

A $750,000 yearling purchase from Lane's End at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton New York Select Yearling Sale at Saratoga, Private Mission, in getting her third graded stakes win, improved her overall mark to 5-1-0 from nine starts. With the winner's share of $120,000, her earnings increased to $397,300.

Blue Stripe, attentive to the pace, got a pocket trip while third approaching the quarter, swung three-wide and outgamed McCarthy's Varda for second money under Tyler Baze. Considering that Blue Stripe got quite a bit of dirt in her face throughout, she ran big race to hold Varda safe by a half length.

A winner of the Santa Margarita (G2) at 1 1/8 miles on April 30, Argentine-bred Blue Stripe was the second choice at 8-5.

Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, third-place finisher Varda finished 4 ½ lengths in front of Lady Mystify.

The Santa Maria trophy was presented by legendary Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye. In from Louisiana with his wife, Juanita, to visit family, “Eddie D.” sported a New Orleans Saints cap and received a rousing welcome from the crowd when introduced by track announcer Frank Mirahmadi.

Unbeaten Society Becomes Latest Gun Runner-Sired SW for Asmussen

Society handled the stretch out and class hike Saturday evening to become the 12th stakes winner for her fast-starting sire–at least seven of which have been trained by Gun Runner's Hall of Fame conditioner Steve Asmussen. Belying odds of nearly 28-1 when unveiled by Wayne Mackey going 6 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland last October, the Peter Blum homebred was subsequently transferred to the Asmussen barn and resurfaced to take a first-level allowance going the same distance in the slop one race after the GI Kentucky Oaks May 6.

Two turns seemed unlikely to be a roadblock on paper, but Society was a bit keen early here before settling under Tyler Gaffalione to post splits of :24.81 and :49.37. Miss Yearwood made a big move on the final bend to challenge, and the pair turned for home glued to each other. Society was up for the tussle, and punched back resolutely along the fence to prove best.

“She was very impressive and we're really proud of her to run like that trying two turns for the first time,” said assistant trainer Scott Blasi. “She ran well here in her last start sprinting and showed today she could handle the added distance. We'll see what's next but we're very pleased with her effort today.”

The winner's dam is a half to GSW and GISP Pleasant Prince (Indy King). This is the female family of GSWs Mark One, Rookie Sensation, Holy Helena and fellow Asmussen pupil Holy Boss.

Etiquette's now 2-year-old Union Rags colt was a $37,000 KEESEP buyback. Next in the pipeline is a Street Sense filly, followed by an Omaha Beach colt.
