Tamayuz Colt In Command At Chantilly

Having witnessed their filly Rosacea (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) overcoming a horror draw to be third in the G1 Prix de Diane, Haras de la Perelle and Stephane Wattel's Sunday at Chantilly got even better as Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) recorded an authoritative success in the G3 Prix du Lys Longines. Off the mark at the fifth attempt in a 9 1/2-furlong handicap on the Polytrack here Apr. 20, the chestnut had bounded to a straightforward win over another two furlongs at Angers at the end of last month and was awarded due respect as the 3-1 second favourite for this Grand Prix de Paris prep. Allowed ample breathing room on the front end from the outset under Theo Bachelot, the homebred was in complete control in early straight and settled the outcome with a 11.32 split from the two to the one. Maintaining to the line, he had 3 1/2 lengths to spare over Virtual Rock (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}), with the 17-10 favourite Martel (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) a neck behind in third having been asked too big a question.

“This horse has a unique blend of speed and stamina,” Wattel said. “He had won easily in the provinces, but it was hard to imagine that he could be as impressive as he has been in that race. He has improved and, while he is not in the [July 14 G1] Grand Prix de Paris, in the light of this performance it would be the logical next step so we will most definitely consider supplementing.”

Simca Mille is the first foal out of Swertia (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), a daughter of The Aga Khan's Sanjida (Ire) (Polish Precedent) who was black-type-placed on six occasions including when third in the G3 Prix Penelope and G3 Prix Cleopatre. She is in turn kin to three black-type winners headed by Sarafina (Fr) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), who captured this card's feature Prix de Diane in 2010 having won the G1 Prix Saint-Alary and was later crowned European champion 3-year-old filly. She went on to produce the G3 Prix d'Aumale scorer Savarin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and her G3 Prix Messidor-winning full-brother Geniale (Jpn). Sarafina's half-sister Sanaya (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) was second in the Saint-Alary, while this is also the family of Sumayr (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}) who captured the Grand Prix de Paris in its old guise as a 15-furlong contest in 1985. Swertia has the unraced 2-year-old filly Sadia (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and a yearling filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire).

Fillies Absolutely Zero, Stone Silent Shine In 2YO Stakes At Santa Anita

Reddam Racing's Absolutely Zero opted to take on the boys Saturday at Santa Anita and she answered the call, turning back a determined effort from her stablemate Tahoma to take the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity Stakes by one length.

The race was one of a pair of black-type races for 2-year-olds, including the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes, won by Stone Silent.

Absolutely Zero, a Nyquist filly, covered the Futurity's five furlongs in :59.09 under Mario Gutierrez.

Trained by Doug O'Neill, who was out of town to saddle Hot Rod Charlie to a second-place finish in the TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, Absolutely Zero could have run earlier in the day against fillies in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante, but the decision was made to face males at the same distance.

Quick from gate and head and head into and around the far turn with Midnight Lightning, Absolutely Zero showed tremendous heart as she repelled a stiff challenge to her outside from Tahoma the final furlong.

“She's not the fastest out of the gate (but) today, she broke really well,” said Gutierrez.  “She broke with them and I tried to maintain my position and find my way to keep her in there (and) she responded really well.

“She's very gutsy. She definitely is a fighter and showed big improvement. She can only get better. The fact that she's running with the boys, you know that's what is impressive about her right now. …”

A 1 ¾-length first-out maiden winner versus open company going 4 ½ furlongs May 21, Absolutely Zero was off as the 4-5 favorite against eight males and paid $3.80.

“Nyquist is top five in the country, no doubt, if not top three,” said O'Neill assistant Steve Rothblum in regard to the winner's sire, who won the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) for Reddam and O'Neill. “I know we've had quite a few by him and every one of them can run. There's no bums in the group, which is amazing for a sire to consistently reproduce really nice horses and he's doing that now. Not just with us, he's doing it all over the country.

“I know we really regard (runner-up) Tahoma very highly.  When they turned for home and he came at her, I thought that was a really good test and she responded so well.  I mean, she dug in, not an ounce of quit in her and just kept on going on about her business and galloped away.  I think it's a testament to her quality.”

Out of Reddam's multiple stakes-winning Square Eddie mare How About Zero, Absolutely Zero, now perfect in two starts, picked up $60,000 for the win, increasing her earnings to $112,260.

Tahoma, who was 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify's first North American foal to race when he broke his maiden going 4 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita on May 22, improved markedly today but was second best. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, he was the second choice at 3-1.

Florida-Bred First Time Starter Stone Silent Leads Throughout In Debutante

With heavily favored Tom's Regret stumbling badly at the start, John Sadler's first time starter Stone Silent speed to the lead and never looked back, taking the Debutante by 3 ¼ lengths.

Ridden by Ramon Vazquez, Stone Silent, a $410,000 OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training sale purchase, got five furlongs in :58.28.

Tom's Regret, never headed in a pair of dazzling wins, was a joint fourth heading to the half mile pole and rallied from six lengths back turning for home to be second in a big effort under Tyler Baze.

With three gate drills on her tab, her most recent a half mile in :48 flat on June 13, Stone Silent was off as the second choice at 3-1 in a field of six juvenile fillies and paid $8.00.

“I think some of the commentators picked up on the fact that she worked (a quarter mile) in :20 (and 2/5) in the sale, so she's very quick,” said Sadler. “Ramon was good, he came out and worked her three times and knew her. We hadn't really pressed her hard in the morning.  We just got her fit because we knew the speed was in there.

“She'll go into the stake program for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar. We have a couple of other ones coming along behind her, so it's good to have the first one out and get one under our belt.”

A Florida-bred daughter of Adios Charlie out of the A.P. Jet mare Travelator, Stone Silent is owned by Talla Racing LLC, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Edwin Baker and picked up $60,000 for the victory.

“I knew she was a nice filly,” said Vazquez.  “She broke good and got a good position and she responded really well.  I wasn't surprised to be on the lead because she's a first timer and nobody knew this filly could run.”

Trained by Jorge Periban, Tom's Regret a California-bred filly by Tom's Tribute, broke a bit inward and stumbled out of the gate with regular rider Baze doing well to remain aboard.

Most recently victorious in versus 11 males in an ungraded stakes going five furlongs at Churchill Downs, she was off at 3-5 and finished 4 ¾ lengths in front of E Z Pharis.

Ridden by Kyle Frey, E Z Pharis broke well from the rail, was head and head with Golden Gate shipper Rousing Jewel to the top of the lane, but never threatened the winner while finishing a half length in front of longshot Dancing Mo.

Foley-Trained Filly Altered Shot Seeks To Join Exclusive Company At Churchill Downs

No horse has won four races in a single meet at Churchill Downs since 2005, but Steve Vanovich, Larry Craig, and Speshell Racing's 4-year-old filly Altered Shot is poised to attempt that feat prior to the closing of the 42-day Spring Meet.

Altered Shot began her three-race win streak on opening Night of the Spring Mneet when she defeated four rivals by 2 ½ lengths in a $50,000 claiming event. Since that win, Altered Shot sports victories in a starter allowance event on May 21 and a first-level conditioned allowance on June 12.

Altered Shot's trainer Greg Foley has not made a final decision on which race she'll run in prior to the closing of the meet July 4 but has a couple of options he's keeping open.

“She's been in great form since we got her back going this year,” Foley said. “She ran once at Fair Grounds and may not have been quite as ready as we wanted that day. But, when we got her back here to Churchill we had confidence in her that she'd be ready to go. It's not very often you can run upper-level horses this many times in a single meet because races sometimes won't go. She's rewarded us so far and we're excited about running her before the meet closes.”

A daughter of Alternation–Wyn Jym, by Proud Citizen, Altered Shot was bred in Kentucky by Marianne Strong. She sold to Foley for $28,000 out of the Gainesway consignment at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale and has since bankroflled $260,878 while compiling a career record of 4-1-4 from 11 starts.

Interestingly, the last horse to win four races in a single meet at Churchill Downs was also trained by Foley. In 2005, Ellen's Foxy Girl broke her maiden on May 5 and proceeded to win three more starts before she was claimed July 1.

Since 1991 only nine horses have won four races in a single meet at Churchill Downs. Aside from Ellen's Foxy Girl, the others are Shining Power (1991, trainer Neil Pessin); Aggresive Jay (1992, Jerry Romans and Bill Connelly); Rule Sixteen (1994, David MacLean and Bernie Flint); May I Inquire (1995, Frank Brothers and Jerry Romans); Rowdy Hero (1995, Gary “Red Dog” Hartlage), Brenda's Ziggy (1996, Joe Lucas and Mark Danner); Cayenne (1997, James Hauswald and Earl Murphy), and Burning Marque (2000, Stan Hough).

Mandaloun Breezes At Churchill In Preparation For Stephen Foster

Juddmonte's 2021 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mandaloun continued his serious work for the $750,000 Stephen Foster (G2) on July 2 with a swift six-furlong move Sunday in 1:12.40 under regular jockey Florent Geroux.

Mandaloun, who has been away from the races since finishing ninth in the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) in February, began his move with fractions of :12.80, :36.40 and 1:00.20. The son of Into Mischief galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25.80, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols.

For Geroux, it was a whirlwind 24 hours and he necessarily wasn't scheduled to work Mandaloun. He was slated to ride Saturday at Monmouth Park but didn't make it to the Oceanport, New Jersey track because of several travel delays and caught an early flight back to Louisville for the 5:30 a.m. (ET) work.

Nominations to the Stephen Foster closed Saturday and will be available at www.churchilldowns.com/horsemen in the coming days.
