Jockey Hollie Doyle Makes History In French Oaks Aboard Nashwa

Jockey Hollie Doyle posted the first classic win of her career Sunday at Chantilly when guiding Nashwa to victory in the 173rd edition of the Prix de Diane Longines (French Oaks) (G1).

Doyle's victory in the race was the first in a French classic by a woman rider.

Nashwa, who was third in the Oaks (G1) at Epsom earlier this month, won by a short neck from La Parisienne, with Rosacea another 4 1/2 lengths back in third in the field of 17 3-year-old fillies.

A daughter of Frankel, Nashwa covered 2,100 meters (about 1 3/8 miles) in 2:06.63 on good to soft turf.

Breaking from post 2, John and Thady Gosden's runner took the lead alongside race favorite Agave with La Parisienne in a handy position behind them by the rail. With her post 17 draw, Rosacea could only travel at the rear.

Going off the final turn, the two leaders took off and it seemed for a moment that they would go on their own to the finish, but about 300 yards out, Nashwa and Doyle took the upper hand on their rival, and it was then La Parisienne's turn to challenge the British duo.

The duel that followed remained uncertain for some time, but Nashwa stayed for the narrow victory. Rosacea, who came from far away by the rail with Christophe Soumillon, snatched third place from Agave while at more than 100-1 odds, Fall in Love finished very well in fifth.

Third in her only 2-year-old race last year, Nashwa won for her comeback before going for the Oaks Trials in Newbury, over 1 ¼ miles, which she dominated easily. She didn't seem to stay the trip in the Epsom Oaks and on Sunday she showed that the 2,100 meters at Chantilly were spot on for her.

Nashwa was homebred in Britain by Imad Al Sagar's Blue Diamond Stud. She did not go to the sales, unlike her older brother Louganini (by Zoffany), a gelding who sold for £60,000 last year at Tattersalls. Their dam, Princess Loulou (by Pivotal), won at the listed level in England and took second place in the Prix Jean Romanet (G1) at Deauville.

Doyle, who is no relation to sibling jockeys James Doyle and Sophie Doyle, is married to fellow jockey Tom Marquand.

Latest Bolt d’Oro Winner Scores for Ruis

2nd-Churchill Downs, $121,905, Msw, 6-19, 2yo, f, 4 1/2f, :52.45, ft, 1 length.
BOLTS N RAINBOWS (f, 2, Bolt d'Oro–On Rainbow Bridge {MSW, $333,202}, by Bold Executive) became the sixth winner for her hot-starting freshman sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) Sunday, but first to carry the same green Ruis Racing silks as the 2017 GI Del Mar Futurity and GI FrontRunner S. winner himself. Backed down to 3-1 off an ambitious 10-1 morning-line quote, the homebred broke well, but was out-footed by a few early and sat midpack. She still hadn't really gotten into gear as they entered the lane and second timer Black Forest (Frosted) took over, but Mitchell Murrill worked her out into the clear and away from the kickback by midstretch and she proceeded to quicken nicely and inhale that foe for an ultimately comfortable one-length tally. Mick Ruis's operation purchased the winner's dam–a precocious two-time stakes winner a juvenile on the Woodbine synthetic–for $65,000 at KEENOV '17 while in foal to Kantharos. The resulting foal won as a late November juvenile for the Ruis family, but was eventually claimed away. Bolts N Rainbows has an unraced 3-year-old half-brother by another former Ruis runner in War Envoy (War Front). On Rainbow Bridge has since been exclusive with Bolt d'Oro. She failed to produce a foal in 2021, but had a Bolt colt this term. Spendthrift resident Bolt d'Oro, whose juveniles took the sales by storm this year with seven horses fetching $500,000 or more and up to the $1.2-million top price paid by Spendthrift at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream, was represented some 23 hours earlier by pricey and good-looking Monmouth debut winner Major Dude. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $69,460. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Premiership Betting Review – 1 May 2006

Chelsea officially clinched the Premiership on Saturday lunchtime with a crushing 3-0 victory over second placed Manchester United. The Blues only needed a draw to confirm the champions status but William Gallas after five minutes, Joe Cole on 61 and Ricardo Carvalho on 73 sealed victory in style as Jose Mourinho’s side retained their Premiership trophy at 6/5.

Another crucial match in the Premiership was Portsmouth’s victory at Wigan Athletic. As predicted in the Walker’s Word column, Pompey’s win at the JJB Stadium relegated both Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion in what was a gloomy day for West Midlands football. Henri Camara gave Wigan the lead after 34 minutes, but Benjamin Mwaruwari’s first goal form the club on 63 and Matt Taylor’s second penalty in as many weeks on 71 ensured a 9/5 away win.

Birmingham City could only muster a goalless draw against Newcastle United when only victory could preserve their Premiership status until the final match of the season. The draw was available at 12/5 before kick-off.

Liverpool went level on points with Manchester United after Saturday’s 3-1 win over struggling Aston Villa. Fernando Morientes opened the scoring after four minutes but Gareth Barry levelled on 58. Captain Steven Gerrard netted on 61 and 65 minutes to ensure a 3/10 victory for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Tottenham Hotspur tightened their grip on fourth place with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. Aaron Lennon struck the decisive goal on the hour for the 7/10 Spurs.

Fulham won their first match away from Craven Cottage with a last gasp goal at Manchester City. Richard Dunne gave City the lead after 69m minutes but Collins John equalised for the Cottagers with six minutes left. Steed Malbranque then fired in a stoppage time winner to secure an unlikely victory at 3/1 odds.

Alan Curbishley’s last match at The Valley as manager of Charlton Athletic ended in defeat as they were beaten 2-0 by 8/5 Blackburn Rovers. Steven Reid broke the deadlock two minutes before the break while a Chris Powell own goal on 65 put Mark Hughes’ side in touching distance of UEFA Cup football.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Arsenal made sure Sunderland went the entire season without a home win with a 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light. Arsenal, huge 3/10 favourites before kick-off, scored three goals in 14 first half minutes, with a Danny Collins own goal on 28, Cesc Fabregas on 38 and Thierry Henry three minutes before the break.

Manchester United edged one point ahead of Liverpool as they drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough at Old Trafford. United, heavily odds-on before kick-off, saw Ruud van Nistelrooy miss a penalty after 65 minutes and the match ended level at 9/2.
