Leicester Racecourse Opens Groundbreaking Jockeys’ ‘Warm-Up’ Facility

Leicester Racecourse in the U.K. has become one of the first courses to open brand-new warm-up and performance facilities designed to support jockeys as elite athletes.

Jockey and PJA board member Page Fuller officially opened the facility as she, alongside fellow jockey Andrew Mullen, has been integral in working towards weighing room improvements, in conjunction with the full support of the PJA. After a significant £650,000 (about US$820,000) investment, the area includes a range of gym equipment which will see a huge improvement to the preparations jockeys can undertake for racing and are aimed at ensuring that they are physically ready to compete from the first race and to act as an injury prevention tool.

The redevelopment is part of a wider initiative by racing bodies to update and modernize the weighing room across all racecourses, bringing it in line with jockeys' needs as elite athletes. The organizations involved are the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) and the Racecourse Association (RCA).

With the new gym equipment at Leicester provided by Perform Better, the jockeys now have access to a new warm-up area that includes fitness bikes, a TRX suspension trainer, resistance bands, kettle bells and skipping ropes. Danny Hague, Strength and Conditioning coach at the IJF's Jack Berry House, has been working with those involved to develop the warm-up areas and create warm-up and performance exercises for the jockeys to use ahead of racing, that are available on the IJF Youtube channel and can be played on smart TVs inside the facilities.

Clerk of the Course Jimmy Stevenson said of the new facilities: “It's fantastic to be a part of this initiative and be one of the first racecourses to show off our new warm-up facilities. We are very grateful to the RCA, BHA and PJA for their help in making this a success. We look forward to getting the jockeys' thoughts and continuing to work with them closely to make our participant facilities the best they can be.”

Dr Jerry Hill, Chief Medical Adviser at the BHA said of the initiative: “It has been great to see Leicester really champion the scheme to improve the jockeys' facilities, they have been immensely positive, and I look forward to seeing other racecourses do the same as part of this ongoing project. It is a huge testament to all involved and their hard work that the facilities have opened today and a tribute to Leicester's care and enthusiasm for the participants of the sport.

“Jockeys are a key part of our sport and as elite athletes it is a top priority that we provide them with the tools they need to excel and perform at their best, whilst also considering their well-being. We worked with our participants when planning the changes, and these weighing room updates are part of a larger project to bring all aspects of jockey facilities in line with their needs and the standards of other elite sports.”

Jockeys are top athletes who have to be incredibly fit to perform at the highest level day in day out. To become a licensed jockey, participants must undergo a grueling fitness test including holding a plank for up to four minutes and riding a WattBike with all-out effort for three minutes. During racing, a jockey's body is working close to its limits, with a typical energy expenditure of 80%-90%, which is increased to over 90% in the last 30 seconds of a race. Their heart rate will often go above 180 beats per minute, and they will experience a force of two times their bodyweight going through their legs. Therefore, to make sure jockeys can perform at their best, warm up areas in the weighing room are critical.

As similar facilities are rolled-out at other courses, the organizations involved will be able to monitor and measure the warm-up effects on jockey performance and use this to make further improvements in facilities and performance coaching and advice.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Stakes From Belmont, Churchill Downs

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring four stakes from Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/cross-country-wagers.

The sequence kicks off in Race 8 from Belmont Park at 4:40 p.m. Eastern with a nine-horse field of 3-year-olds and upward traveling a one-turn mile in a starter allowance led by three-time winner Royal Tryst for trainer Mike Maker. A competitive group includes Air Show, to be saddled by Rudy Rodriguez; and Luni Sima, who has paired up 85 Beyer Speed Figures in his last two outings for trainer Peter Walder.

Action switches to Churchill for the second leg in the $200,000 Aristides [Race 9, 4:55 p.m.], a six-furlong sprint for older horses. The Larry Jones-trained Bob's Edge has won 2-of-3 starts this year, including a rallying one-length score in the Grade 3 Whitmore in March at Oaklawn Park. Miles Ahead garnered a career-best 102 Beyer for trainer Paul McGee two starts back when besting Drain the Clock by a neck in the Gulfstream Park Sprint. A pair of entrants offer horse-for-course status with the Gregory Foley-trained Bango [12-6-1-2] and Chris Hartman's Necker Island [10-5-0-0], boasting past success at the Louisville oval.

The middle leg will see a talented but compact group of sophomores contest nine furlongs over the Belmont inner turf in the Grade 2, $200,000 Pennine Ridge [Race 9, 5:12 p.m.] led by Unanimous Consent and Napoleonic War for trainer Chad Brown. Unanimous Consent, undefeated in three starts, enters from a 1 3/4-length score in the Woodhaven on April 23 at Aqueduct, while Napoleonic War, who has won 2-of-3 starts, seeks blacktype while exiting a nose score in an optional-claimer on May 5 at Belmont. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher sends out potential pacesetter Emmanuel for his turf debut after finishing third last out in the Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland.

The penultimate leg offers a field of eight older horses traveling nine furlongs on the Churchill Downs main track in the $200,000 Blame [Race 10, 5:26 p.m.] as the Pletcher-trained Americanrevolution makes his first start since capturing the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap presented by NYRA Bets in December at the Big A. The New York-bred Constitution colt has posted three consecutive triple-digit Beyers, including a career-best 108 for his 11 3/4-length romp in the Empire Classic in October at Belmont. Pletcher also saddles the multiple graded stakes placed Dynamic One, who exits a runner-up effort to returning rival Scalding in the Grade 3 Ben Ali on April 23 at Keeneland.

Closing out the sequence is the $200,000 Audubon [Race 11, 5:58 p.m.] as a field of 11 sophomores traverse nine furlongs over the Churchill turf led by another duo for Pletcher in graded-stakes winners Grand Sonata and Major General, who makes his stakes debut.

Grand Sonata, by Medaglia d'Oro, won back-to-back turf stakes at Gulfstream this winter, taking the Dania Beach in January and the Grade 3 Kitten's Joy in February. He enters from a close second in the Grade 3 Transylvania on April 8 at Keeneland, defeated less than a length by Sy Dog. Major General, by Constitution, captured the Grade 3 Iroquois over the Churchill main track in September. He stumbled at the start when off-the-board in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in March, but redeemed himself with a close second in the Grade 3 Lexington in April at Keeneland. He tries turf after fishing a distant ninth in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Opposition will be found in the Brown-trained maiden winner James Jones and the stakes-placed Speaking Scout, a two-time winner for conditioner Graham Motion.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, which features a low 15 percent takeout, will continue each Saturday throughout the year.

America's Day at the Races will present daily coverage and analysis of the spring/summer meet at Belmont Park on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule.

Insight Outcomes: Owen Leaps to Victory, Realm Looks Regal

Juveniles kicked off Friday's card at Churchill and put on a display for their young sires, while turf fillies did the same for established sires at Delaware the day prior. Despite our featured horses not winning, each gave hints of bigger things down the road and the actual winners weren't too shabby either.

THURSDAY'S INSIGHTS: Kitten's Joy Homebred Debuts at Delaware
3rd-Delaware, $40,750, Msw, 5-26, 3yo/up, 1m 70ydsT, 1:41.58, fm, 1 3/4 lengths.
Alex Campbell, Jr. homebred Come On Kitty Cat (Kitten's Joy) was featured, but it was favored second-timer REGAL REALM (f, 3, Animal Kingdom–Sky Willow {SW, $114,979}, by Empire Maker) who clearly relished a switch to turf, throwing her ears up out of the gate and repelling a threat to lead pillar-to-post for the win. Come On Kitty Cat never got close, but another recent Campbell homebred also trained by Graham Motion had a similar introduction to the races nearly three years ago and won her first graded event just over four months later. That would be MGSW & MGISP Mean Mary (Scat Daddy), who just so happens to be out of Come On Kitty Cat's GISW half-sister Karlovy Vary (Dynaformer). Show stealer Regal Realm, a Jonathan Thomas-trained Augustin Stable homebred, is out of a half-sister to MGSW Spelling Again (Awesome Again), who brought $800,000 from China Horse Club at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton November sale as a racing or broodmare prospect. FRIDAY'S INSIGHTS: $500k Practical Joke Colt Debuts at Churchill Downs for Todd Pletcher
1st-Churchill Downs, $117,143, Msw, 5-27, 2yo, 5f, :58.78, ft, 1 3/4 lengths.
The well-related Justafever (Justify) and Summonyourcourage (Practical Joke) both took a backseat to OWEN'S LEAP (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Defy Gravity {SW, $171,240}, by Bandini). All three debuters are by young sires: Practical Joke is a top five second-crop sire, while Bolt d'Oro and Justify are the early leaders of the first-crop list. Owen's Leap settled midpack in the compacted field, made his move on the outside, and drove to victory with Justafever and Summonyourcourage filling out of the trifecta. The Clearsky Farms-bred, Tom Amoss-trained winner brought $175,000 at Keeneland September from Michael McLoughlin and registered as the third winner for his freshman sire. His dam is a half to GISW Callback (Street Sense) and his granddam is a half to 2010 GI Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (Maria's Mon). Justafever is a half to GISW Nickname (Scat Daddy), while Summonyourcourage is from the same family as champion Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and GISW Sahara Sky (Pleasant Tap). Equibase’s ‘Smart Pick’ Free Betting Tool Now Available for Desktop

Equibase Company has expanded the availability of its free betting tool, “Smart Pick™,” to equibase.com. Smart Pick was developed in 2020 and initially launched on the company's free Equibase app.

Smart Pick's simple interface creates a suggested wagering ticket based on a set of user preferences. Those preferences include risk tolerance, wager amount, and the ability to place an extra emphasis on handicapping aspects such as trainer, jockey, or horse pedigree.

“Smart Pick has proved to be the perfect tool for our Equibase app users who might not have the time or experience to analyze pages of past performances,” said Chris Dawahare, Equibase's vice president of Data Operations and Digital Services. “We still have thousands of unique visitors to our website every day, so it made sense to make Smart Pick available on the desktop so that people can easily access it whenever they go for entries information.”

Users can find the Smart Pick tool within the entries section of equibase.com, and it is available for every race at all North American racetracks. Smart Pick is located to the right of each entry, next to Entries Plus, another free product that provides basic racing performance information in an interactive, easy-to-digest format.

“Entries Plus is a simple and fun way for fans to engage in a race, and now Smart Pick can help them easily take that next step by suggesting wagering options,” Dawahare said.

Equibase Company is a partnership between subsidiaries of The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America and serves as the Thoroughbred industry's official database. Through its website and mobile applications, Equibase offers a comprehensive array of free statistical information as well as premium handicapping products and reports in support of the North American Thoroughbred racing industry.
