Canoodling, Neige Blanche Will Try To Upset Going Global In Monday’s Gamely

Unbeaten on the Santa Anita turf, Phil D'Amato's Irish-bred Going Global heads a field of eight fillies and mares 3 and up going 1 1/8 miles in Monday's Grade 1, $400,000 Gamely Stakes on the Memorial Day program at the Arcadia, Calif., track.

Although well beaten on a wet-fast main track in the Grade 1 American Oaks Dec. 26, Going Global bounced back with a command performance in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes at one mile on turf April 9, as she pressed the pace and went on to an impressive 1 ¾-length win at odds of 1-5 under Umberto Rispoli.

A winner of seven out of her nine stateside starts after arriving from Ireland, Going Global is unbeaten in three tries at the Gamely distance and will be reunited Flavien Prat, who although he has relocated to New York, is back at Santa Anita on Monday.  In eight Southern California starts, seven of them in graded stakes, Prat and Going Global found the winner's circle on six occasions, dating back to her U.S. debut in the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 14, 2021.

A winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks four starts back on Aug. 21, Going Global is unbeaten in five Santa Anita turf starts while being favored in seven of her nine races with D'Amato.  Owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig and Ray Pagano, 4-year-old Going Global is 13-8-1-0 overall with earnings of $769,292.

Ridden for the first time by Juan Hernandez, the Mike Puype-trained Canoodling was thoroughly dominant in a 1 ¾-length, gate to wire win going a mile on grass in the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes May 1, her second graded stakes victory of the meet.

A front-running upset winner of the Grade 3 Megahertz going a mile on turf three starts back on Jan. 29, Canoodling was beaten three lengths when a troubled fifth two starts back in the Grade 2 Buena Vista, also at one mile on grass.

A 4-year-old filly by Pioneerof the Nile out of the Harlan's Holiday mare Miz Kella, Canoodling is owned by B4 Farms, LLC and will be trying 1 1/8 miles for the first time while ridden back by Hernandez.  With an overall mark of 16-8-1-2, she has earnings of $342,023.

A close second in her last two starts, most recently the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf, Going to Vegas has a tremendous resume that includes a head win four starts back in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive here on Oct. 2.  Formerly trained by Richard Baltas, she'll make her first start for D'Amato and be ridden for the first time by eastern-based Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Two for three at 1 1/8 miles on turf, Going to Vegas has demonstrated the ability to be on or near the lead or to rally from off the pace.  Owned by Abbondanza Racing, LLC, Medallion Racing and MyRacehorse, she's got three graded stakes wins to her credit and has five wins and as many second from 13 starts on the Santa Anita lawn.  With an overall mark of 25-7-10-2 overall, Going to Vegas has earnings of $699,151.

Trainer Leonard Powell's long-fused French-bred Neige Blanche, a winner of three of her last four races—all at marathon distances on turf, wheels back quickly off a 1 ¼-length win going 1 1/2 miles on turf in the Grade 3 Santa Barbara on May 14.

A Group 3 winner at age 3 in France, Neige Blanche has posted five wins from 12 North American starts for Powell and owners Madaket Stables, LLC, Laura DeSeroux, Marsha Naify and Mathilde Powell.  A close fourth in her lone try at the Gamely distance when beaten 2 ½ lengths in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 20, 2022, Neige Blanche is 18-8-0-4 overall with earnings of $480,280.

Smooth Like Strait Faces Five In Defense Of Shoemaker Mile Title

With superstar jockey Flavien Prat returning from New York to ride him on Monday's Memorial Day program at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., Cannon Thoroughbreds' homebred Smooth Like Strait looms large among a half dozen 3-year-olds and up on turf in the Grade 1, $500,000 Shoemaker Mile.

Originally run at Hollywood Park in 1938 and renamed to honor legendary Hall of Fame jockey William Shoemaker, the Shoe Mile is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, with the winner earning a berth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 5.

Most recently third, beaten a neck in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile on turf at Keeneland April 15, Smooth Like Strait has had a string of five narrow defeats since winning last year's Shoe Mile on May 31, finishing second four times and third once.

A 5-year-old horse by Midnight Lute out of the Flower Alley mare Smooth as Usual, Smooth Like Strait has, by all accounts, trained very well for his Shoe Mile defense, posting a half mile at Churchill Downs on May 5 in 47.40, third best of 81, five furlongs at Santa Anita on May 16 in 59.40, best of 28, and a half mile in 48.80, on May 23, which ranked 24th of 55 at the distance.

Trained by Michael McCarthy, Smooth Like Strait, a four-time graded stakes winner, is 20-7-7-3 overall with earnings of $1,481,573.

Also exiting the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland April 15 is Count Again, one of three Phil D'Amato-trained entrants in the Shoe Mile.  In a big effort, Count Again rallied to finish sixth, beaten just 1 ¾ lengths at odds of 6-1.  Off as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (turf) two starts back on March 5, he rallied for a head victory under Flavien Prat, who also rode him to victory here three starts back in the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes Feb. 5.

With Prat committed to Smooth Like Strait, three-time Eclipse Award champion Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be aboard for the first time on Monday.  A winner of four out of his seven starts at one mile on grass, Count Again, a 7-year-old Ontario, Canadian-bred gelding by Awesome Again, appears at the top of his game for owner/breeder Sam-Son Farm and Agave Racing Stable.

With an overall mark of 16-6-1-4, Count Again has earnings of $769,915.

Second, beaten 1 ¼ lengths going a mile and one quarter on turf in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes at Santa Anita on April 30, Masteroffoxhounds, who will be making his first start for D'Amato, would appear better suited at longer distances but did have a win and a second from five starts going one mile on turf in Ireland at age three.

Owned by Rockingham Ranch, Masteroffoxhounds, a 5-year-old horse by War Front out of the Galileo mare Outstanding, posted two wins, including a victory going 1 1/4 miles on turf in the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes, from nine stateside starts with trainer Richard Baltas.

1-Masteroffoxhounds—Juan Hernandez—122

2-Count Again—Irad Ortiz, Jr.—126

3-Heywoods Beach—Umberto Rispoli—122

4-Dance Some Mo—Kyle Frey—122

5-Smooth Like Strait—Flavien Prat—124

6-Restrainedvengence—Edwin Maldonado—122

First post time for a 10-race card on Monday is at 1 p.m.  Providing there is no Single Ticket winner in the 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot prior to Monday, there could be a total Rainbow 6 pool with a mandatory payout of $5 million on Monday.

Half to Tenebrism Starts at Navan

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a half-sister to Group 1 winner Tenebrism (Caravaggio).

STATUETTE (Justify) is the fifth foal out of the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois heroine Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), making her a half-sister to last year's G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Coolmore, Westerberg and Merriebelle Stables' March-foaled chestnut is joined by fellow Ballydoyle trainee Unless (Justify), another by the Triple Crown winner and the first foal out of another Cheveley Park heroine in Clemmie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). They will have to be smart to deal with Amo Coutinho Partnership's Curragh runner-up Olivia Maralda (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the Michael O'Callaghan trainee who at 460,000gns was the second-highest-priced lot and top-priced filly at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

AGE OF KINGS (IRE) (Kingman {GB}), the 1.1-million gns Book 1 graduate who went down by a whisker on debut at Naas earlier this month, appears to have things easier in this maiden won three years ago by the G2 July S.-winning sire Royal Lytham (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Like him, Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor, Smith and Brant's son of the G2 May Hill S. winner Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) bears the Ballydoyle standard and after such a promising debut it is anybody's guess what he can achieve.

Gulfstream Park: Saturday’s Rainbow 6 To Have $600,000 Guaranteed Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $600,000 for Saturday's program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the 17th racing day in a row since a lucky bettor hit for a $182,098 payoff April 28.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 7-12, featuring a highly competitive $65,000 Big Drama, a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up that were bred in Florida, in Race 11.

Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained King Cab, a 4 ¾-length winner of the seven-furlong Sophomore Stakes for Florida-bred 3-year-olds at Tampa two starts back, will take on older foes for a second time Saturday. The Noble Bird gelding showed the way in an April 30 open optional claiming allowance at six furlongs only to be caught late.

Veteran stakes winners Well Defined, Shivaree, Gatsby, Willy Boi, as well at Cajun's Magic, a 3-year-old who will make his first start since finishing 6th in the Curlin Florida Derby (G1), are also entered in the Big Drama.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Warrior's Pride, a two-time sprint stakes winner over the Gulfstream turf course, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite in the $60,000 Sunny Isles, a five-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up on turf, in Race 6. The Antonio Cioffi-trained son of Poseidon's Warrior is coming off a gate-to-wire victory in a five-furlong optional claiming allowance. Steve Klesaris-trained The Virginian, who finished a length behind Warrior's Prince while finishing second last time, will also go to post in the Sunny Isles.
