Dubawi’s Rogue Millennium Pounces Late For Oaks Trial Success

The Rogues Gallery's Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Hawaafez {GB}, by Nayef), who was plucked from the Shadwell operation for 35,000gns as an unraced 2-year-old at last year's Tattersalls December Mares sale, graduated over 10 furlongs in an Apr. 24 Wetherby maiden and punched her ticket to Epsom's June 3 G1 Cazoo Oaks with a narrow victory in Saturday's Listed SBK Oaks Trial at Lingfield. The February-foaled bay has yet to be entered for next month's Classic and connections are keen to stump up the £30,000 supplementary fee for the privilege. Settled off the pace in sixth for the most part, the 15-2 chance was coaxed forward once into the home straight and was unrelenting under a drive inside the final quarter mile to nail the pacesetting Mystic Wells (Kitten's Joy) by a head on the line for a career high. Coolmore and Westerberg's 5-6 favorite Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) raced prominently and threatened in the straight, but faded late to finish fifth.

“She's by the right sire and we decided, before coming here, that if she won she would be added to the Oaks field,” explained trainer Tom Clover. “She's still green and has improved with each piece of work. I actually feel a little guilty about asking her to go to Epsom, but we have to go. She's just flourished and I hope she can continue to progress. The owners [Rogues Gallery] are great sporting people, who absolutely adore it. Whether it's an owners' event or a day trip to watch the horses, their enthusiasm is boundless.” Winning rider Jack Mitchell added, “She was rolling about a bit coming down the hill, but once she levelled out she was strong right the way to the line.”

Rogue Millennium becomes the first black-type winner for G3 Cumberland Lodge S. victrix Hawaafez (GB) (Nayef), herself the leading performer bred from Merayaat (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}). Merayaat's second dam Wedding Bouquet (Ire) (Kings Lake) scored twice at pattern-race level, namely the G3 Park S. and GIII Monrovia H., and also ran second in both G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S. during her juvenile campaign. Wedding Bouquet is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Generous (Ire) (Caerleon {GB}) and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), herself the dam of five pattern-race winners headed by G1 Grand Criterium victor Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill) and G1 Criterium International winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah). Wedding Bouquet is also the granddam of MG1SW distaffer and three-time G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Hawaafez has a 2-year-old filly by Awtaad (Ire) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) to come.

Son Of Kingman A TDN Rising Star At Ascot

Ascot's five-furlong Jemima Howden Novice S. looked a likely race to produce an exciting prospect on paper on Saturday and that proved to be the case as Godolphin's newcomer Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Eartha Kitt {GB}) dashed to TDN Rising Stardom. Sent off the 6-4 favourite under James Doyle, the 525,000gns Book 1 graduate travelled with elan behind the leading duo and when delivered to tackle Walbank (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) with 150 yards remaining surged by for a 1 3/4-length success. There was a further three-length margin back to the long-time leader Redemption Time (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}), who brought racing experience into the mix but was left behind as the expensive Tattersalls purchases drove on.

Noble Style is the first juvenile runner of 2022 for Charlie Appleby, who has now won this three times in five years with newcomers. The March-foaled bay is the second of two foals produced by Pivotal's speedy Listed Boadicea S. winner and G3 Summer S. third bred by Andrew Black's Chasemore Farm. The 23rd TDN Rising Star for Juddmonte's sire sensation, he has Royal Ascot written all over him. The second dam is the G2 Queen Mary S. winner Ceiling Kitty (GB) (Red Clubs {Ire}), who after producing Eartha Kitt tragically died foaling Arthur Kitt (GB) (Camelot {GB}) before that colt went on to capture the Royal meeting's Listed Chesham S. amid emotional scenes.

United Nations Prevails in Lingfield’s Derby Trial

Team Ballydoyle had registered five prior wins in Lingfield's Listed SBK Derby Trial, including with subsequent G1 Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2019, and Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up once again with United Nations (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Christmas Kid, by Lemon Drop Kid) to continue their banner week with a hard-fought victory in this year's edition. For sire Galileo, it was a fourth new stakes winner of the week and extended the Coolmore icon's world-record tally to 351. United Nations graduated over seven furlongs in his Sept. 16 debut at Naas, following up with a seventh behind subsequent G1 2000 Guineas hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Newmarket's one-mile Oct. 9 G3 Autumn S., and lined up for this test coming back off a fourth tackling 10 furlongs in Epsom's Apr. 19 Listed Blue Riband Trial. Moore was content to accept a tow in second as last month's Newbury maiden winner Natural World (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) set the tempo until well beyond halfway. Scrubbed along with three furlongs remaining, the 9-4 second favourite gained an edge approaching the final furlong and was driven out to deny Godolphin number one Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who had flattered to deceive in the closing stages, by 3/4-of-a-length.

“United Nations has been round Epsom and has clearly come out of his race there well,” said Coolmore's Kevin Buckley. “He ticks the boxes, Aidan hoped he would put his experience into practice today and we thought he'd improve with the extra step up in distance. It was a steep learning curve at Epsom [last time], we were happy with that performance and now he as done that here. Having a large team for Epsom is a nice problem to have.” Paul Smith added, “It's a great learning curve going from trial to championship and we've been delighted with the way the respective horses have run at Chester and now Lingfield. We hope it will continue at York.”

United Nations becomes the third black-type winner and fifth stakes performer for GI Ashland S. heroine Christmas Kid (Lemon Drop Kid), who also had the Listed Caravaggio S. victor and G1 Vincent O'Brien S. placegetter Christmas (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the Listed Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial scorer Black Sea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Christmas Kid is also the dam of G3 Killavullan S. runner-up Michaelmas (Elusive Quality) and G2 King Edward VII S. third Father Christmas (Ire) (Bernadini). The next dam is dual Grade III victrix Christmas Gift (Green Desert), who produced the stakes-winning Elusive Gift (Elusive Quality) and is the ancestress of the GIII Eddie D S. victor Holy Lute (Midnight Lute). United Nations' third dam, Christmas Bonus (Key To The Mint), has three stakes winners to her credit including stakes-winning GI Santa Anita Oaks second Bright Candles (El Gran Senor), whose own progeny list is headed by MGISW sire Grand Slam (Gone West). Christmas Kid also has a 2-year-old full-sister to United Nations to come.

No Nay Never Colt A New Rising Star

Aidan O'Brien's stable is going great guns at this fledgling stage of the season and there was another TDN Rising Star off the production line at Naas on Saturday as the 2-year-old Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never–Adventure Seeker {Fr}) booked his Royal Ascot ticket. Narrowly denied on debut by the Ger Lyons-trained Tough Talk (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) over six furlongs at The Curragh Apr. 10, the descendant of the legendary All Along (Fr) was backed down to 4-9 to deliver dropping to five for this Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden staged on yielding-to-soft. Always travelling like the winner in behind as the Joseph O'Brien-trained Alexis Zorba (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) attempted to stretch him, the imposing bay who was a €320,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate was shaken up by Seamie Heffernan to take control inside the final furlong and register a three-length success without being fully extended. There was a further 3 3/4-length margin back to the Jessie Harrington-trained newcomer Keepupwithmyempire (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in third.

“He just outclassed them,” Heffernan said of the January-foaled bay, who was bred by Camas Park Stud and Summerhill and becomes his sire's third TDN Rising Star this term following the stable's fellow juveniles Deneuve (Ire) and Aesop's Fables (Ire). “He had a lovely run the first day, where he was a little bit green and he was one that caught my eye at home. He would be in the mix for Royal Ascot. He's a massive colt, he switches off and has loads of boot and a bit of class–he ticks a lot of boxes.”

Before this season, Ten Sovereigns (Ire) was the sole TDN Rising Star for the sire and he is still his best, but it is early days and the signals are strong that there is plenty to come from No Nay Never. Clearly Ballydoyle have some potentially high-class juveniles among his progeny in 2022 and Little Big Bear gives the impression he is one who is more than just a now horse given his impressive physique. Added to that, his pedigree is not one of a fast and precocious sprinter as his dam Adventure Seeker was a middle-distance performer for the Wildensteins and Alain de Royer-Dupre, winning the 10 1/2-furlong Listed Prix de Liancourt and placing second in the G3 Prix Cleopatre and fourth in the 2011 GI E P Taylor S.

Adventure Seeker, whose yearling is a full-brother to the winner, has thrown one previous stakes performer with her first foal being Andrea Mantegna (Giant's Causeway) who was second in the 12-furlong G3 Hobart Cup, GSP-Aus, $352,585. A half to the precocious but ill-fated G3 Princess Margaret S. third Along Again (Ire) (Elusive City), she is a granddaughter of the aforementioned All Along, the French champion and US Horse of the Year in 1983 courtesy of her G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, GI Turf Classic, G1 Rothmans International and GI Washington D. C. International victories.
