Dash Attack Provides First U.S. Win For Jockey Marin In Long Branch

Samuel Marin's first victory in the United States is one the 20-year-old jockey from Trujilo, Venezuela, won't soon forget.

Able to swing wide to get clearance around the final turn, Marin and the Ken McPeek-trained Dash Attack prevailed in a grinding stretch duel with favorite Dean's List and Paco Lopez to score a half-length victory in the $100,000 Long Branch Stakes Saturdday at Monmouth Park.

In his second mount in the United States, Marin secured his first victory – and in a stakes race.

“I am very emotional right now,” said Marin, the leading apprentice at Hipodromo La Rinconada in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2019. “It's hard to put into words. You only dream about this. I came here for the opportunity. I hope more trainers notice me now.”

Content to sit a close-up fifth on the rail in the six-horse field of 3-year-olds, Marin began edging Dash Attack to the outside after the six furlongs went in 1:13.20 over a sloppy sealed track. When Lopez went inside coming out of the final turn, Marin and Dash Attack went outside. The two hooked up for nearly an eighth of a mile before Dash Attack surged ahead. It was another five lengths back to Smarten Up in third.

The winning time for the mile and 70 yards was 1:42.84.

Dash Attack's previous three races had come in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes, the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes. All three were off the board finishes after the son of Munnings, owned by Catalyst Stable and Magdalena Racing, opened his career with two victories over off tracks.

The 8-5 second choice behind 11-10 favorite Dean's List, the Grade 3 Gotham runner-up trained by Todd Pletcher, Dash Attack paid $5.

“He's handled the slop well, so it made the task a little bit easier for sure,” said McPeek. “We wanted to find an easy spot and get him back to his winning ways. He started off really good and his last couple of races are what I would call a little dull. He didn't have the kick and I wasn't sure if it was because he wasn't good enough or if he was running a little tired. I wanted to get him back into a little easier spot – though he had to work for this one.”

McPeek said his longstanding relationship with Danny Mellul, Marin's agent, led to him giving Marin a leg up on his horse.

“The young man rode him perfect,” said McPeek. “I realize it's his first win in the United States. He needs to give credit to Danny Mellul. Danny and I go way back and Danny is a fine agent. I trusted Danny's judgment here. Danny said `give the kid a shot and I said sure, let's do it.' ”

In the supporting feature, the $85,000 Spruce Fir Handicap, 7-10 favorite Alta Velocita shot the rail and went on to a one-length in the six furlong dash for New Jersey-breds.

Trained by Andrew Simoff and ridden by Lopez, Alta Velocita was fresh off a three-month layoff, splashing home in 1:12.07 for her second stakes victory in 20 career starts. The daughter of Il Postino has won eight times from 20 career starts, with six of those victories coming at Monmouth Park.

Longshot I'm Listening was second in the field of nine fillies and mares three and up, two lengths ahead of Bramble Bay.

Constitution’s We the People Takes Flight in Peter Pan

'TDN Rising Star' We the People (Constitution) put on a show for those that braved the rain at Belmont Saturday–and the fans watching at home–with a dominant and seemingly effortless victory in the GII Peter Pan S., the local prep for the GI Belmont S. June 11.

Dispatched as the 5-2 second choice behind 2-1 favorite Set Sail (Malibu Moon), We the People broke alertly and hustled up to take immediate control. Clicking off opening splits of :23.46 and :47.24 on a clear lead, the bay was still well within himself under a motionless Flavien Prat turning for home. Prat shook the reins at the colt at the top of the lane and We the People instantly responded, opening up on the field with ease to win for fun by 10 1/4 lengths. Golden Glider (Ghostzapper) was the runner-up with Electability (Quality Road) in third. Favored Set Sail never made any impact, finishing sixth.

“[In the Arkansas Derby] Everyone broke well and all sent [for the lead] so I found myself wide and had to take back, drop in, and he didn't understand what I wanted from him from that point on,” Prat said. “Today, he broke well and got me into the race. I wanted a clean trip and to be in the clear and see what he could do from there. He responded really well.”

“We know how good he is,” said winning trainer Rodolphe Brisset, who also saddled fourth-place Western River (Tapit). “He's just his own enemy sometimes because he's a little cocky. Today was good. He got a little warm in the paddock and we gave him a shower and you could see he kind of relaxed and was drying up. I thought the warmup was good compared to Arkansas. Of course, if we bring one all the way here it's because we thought he had a shot to do that. He can run on anything. He's one of those kind.”

As for running one or both of his pupils in the Belmont, Brisset said, “We [brought] both here to see if we could consider the Belmont. Obviously, We the People passed the test and I think I'll have to watch the replay and take my time and wait 10 days to decide on Western River. He only got beat [less than] a half-length for second. I don't think the race set up for him too because they went in :47 1/5 and it wasn't really fast enough to make that big kick. We know the two turns may be the key, too, for Western River.”

A $110,000 KEENOV weanling turned $220,000 KEESEP yearling, We the People summoned $230,000 from WinStar at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale after breezing in :10 3/5 as part of the dispersal of the estate of the late Paul Pompa. He is the third former Pompa horse to win a graded stakes this year, following G1 Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammar (Tonalist) and GI Jenny Wiley S. victress Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom).

Graduating by 5 3/4 lengths going a mile on debut at Oaklawn Feb. 12, We the People earned the 'Rising Star' nod when repeating that effort in an Oaklawn optional claimer exactly one month later. Attempting to get on the GI Kentucky Derby trail, he ran in the Apr. 2 GI Arkansas Derby–his first start without Lasix–but failed to fire, finishing seventh.

Pedigree Notes:
We The People is the second son of Constitution to win the Peter Pan, following 2021 victor Promise Keeper. He is the 21st worldwide graded winner (13 NH & 8 SH) and 34th worldwide black-type scorer (22 NH & 12 SH) for the young WinStar phenom. The colt is also the 29th graded victor and 54th black-type winner out of a daughter of the pensioned Tiznow. We the People is bred on the same Constitution/Tiznow cross as the stallion's best son, Tiz the Law, whose quartet of Grade I wins includes the Belmont S., albeit that was the year it was run at 1 1/8 miles as the first leg of the Triple Crown in 2020.

We the People's unraced dam Letchworth is a daughter of GI Ballerina H. winner Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), who also produced SW & MGSP Armistice Day (Declaration of War) and GSW Stratford Hill (A.P. Indy). Harmony Lodge's dam is GSW Win Crafty Lady (Crafty Prospector), who is responsible for MGSW & GISP millionaire and sire Graeme Hall (Dehere) and GSW Win McCool (Giant's Causeway). This is also the family of Grade I winners Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon) and Pinehurst (Twirling Candy).

The Barbe family's Henley Farms acquired Letchworth for $40,000 at the 2019 Keeneland January sale with We the People in utero. She has since produced a juvenile colt by Always Dreaming, who brought $220,000 at the recent OBS April Sale, and a yearling colt by Audible. She was bred back to More Than Ready.

Smooth Like Strait Aimed For Shoemaker Mile Repeat

Smooth Like Strait will seek to become only the sixth back-to-back winner of the Shoemaker Mile (G1) when the prestigious race named for the late, great jockey Bill Shoemaker, is run for the 81st time on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

The 5-year-old son of the Real Quiet stallion Midnight Lute trained by Michael McCarthy for owner/breeder Michael Cannon who campaigns as Cannon Thoroughbreds has been a gem of consistency competing against elite turf milers.

Although he hasn't won since capturing the Shoemaker Mile on Memorial Day in 2021, the bay horse has acutely made his presence felt in five subsequent graded stakes.

He finished second in three straight Grade 2's, the Eddie Read, the Del Mar Mile and the City of Hope Mile before running second in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) and third last out in the  Maker's Mark Mile (G1) at Keeneland on April 15.

“We're very happy with him,” said McCarthy, who is bringing back Flavien Prat from the East Coast to ride Smooth Like Strait in the Shoemaker.

Smooth Like Strait usually makes his presence felt early by either being on or close to the lead, but as in most races, McCarthy acknowledges the trip is very important.

The $500,000 Shoemaker is a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Race entitling the nominated winner to automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland  Nov. 5.

Previous consecutive winners of the Shoemaker Mile were Fleet Nasrullah, 1959-60; Winonly, 1962-63; Clever Song, 1986-87; Silic, 1999-2000; and Obviously, 2013-14.

Run at Hollywood Park from 1938 to 2013, the Shoemaker Mile was known as the Preview Handicap in 1950 and the Premiere Handicap from 1938 to 1989.

Shoemaker, affectionately called “The Shoe,” was 72 when he died on Oct. 12, 2003 at his home in San Marino, California. He won the race that would be named for him six times, with the female Special Touch in 1951; Pet Bully, 1953; Stranglehold, 1954; Fleet Discovery, 1967; Farnesio, 1979; and Peace, 1989.
