From The Breeders At ParisLongchamp

PARIS, France–When Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) beat Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) to give Godolphin a one-two in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, it was the perfect finishing order for the operation as breeders, with Coroebus representing three generations of Darley/Godolphin breeding. He is also out of a mare by Teofilo (Ire) and from a family which had already given Sheikh Mohammed a dual winner of his beloved Dubai World Cup.

In Paris on Sunday, another son of the Darley lynchpin Dubawi, Modern Games (Ire), added a French Classic to his success in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar. His victory in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains brought the week to a resounding climax for his dam, the New Approach (Ire) mare Modern Ideals (GB). On Monday her 4-year-old son Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) won the Listed Fitzdares Royal Windsor S., followed on Saturday by the easy debut success of juvenile Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in a Newmarket novice contest.

Godolphin's stud director Liam O'Rourke was at Longchamp to welcome back the operation's most recent Classic victor. He said, “The family really came alive last year when this lad showed his colours, and he went on and won a Breeders' Cup and kept on improving. [Saturday] was a nice surprise as well. It didn't immediately look obvious as Mawj was the outsider of our three runners in the race, but there's nothing wrong with her. She's an Exceed And Excel and they love fast ground, and the mare is by New Approach so it's all homegrown. It's very satisfying.”

Modern Ideals, who was trained in France by Andre Fabre, ran only twice without winning, but she is a half-sister to Godolphin's former champion 2-year-old and young French-based stallion Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), the pair being out of Epitome (Ire) (Nahswan), who was bought by Sheikh Mohammed from the late owner/breeder Gerald Leigh.

New Approach, a long-term resident of Dalham Hall Stud along with Dubawi, has already provided Godolphin with Classic winners Masar (Ire) and Dawn Approach (Ire), and he is now branching out in the sphere of broodmare sire.

O'Rourke continued, “We've invested heavily in him, he's our version of Galileo (Ire) and he's really proving his worth now as a broodmare sire.

“And what more can you say about Dubawi? This is going to be his championship year, I hope, and he is well on how way to it. It's long overdue–and take nothing away from Galileo, who has been a wonderful sire forever–but hopefully now Dubawi's time has come.”

Of Godolphin's start to the season, he added, “We have to pinch ourselves. The team in Ireland deserve huge credit because Coroebus and Modern Games are both Irish-bred, but the team across the board plays its part. We're very proud of them, they work very hard, and now the results are coming.”

Two Studs Celebrate Success Of Mangoustine 

There was much to enjoy in the success of Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. A return to the big time for the classy double act of Mikel Delzangles and Gerard Mossé, and a first Classic winner for the 17-year-old Dark Angel (Ire), whose top-level success as a sire has hitherto predominantly been seen in the sprint division. 

There were Classic clues in the pedigree of Mangoustine, whose dam Zotilla (Ire) (Zamindar) is a half-sister to Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast), also trained by Delzangles and the winner of this same race nine years earlier. 

Mangoustine was another feather in the cap for Henri Bozo and his partners involved in Ecurie des Monceaux. In this particular case, the filly was bred by Monceaux, Qatar Bloodstock, and Lordship Stud. The latter also feature as co-breeders of the Oaks prospect Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

“It's amazing,” said Bozo, whose Ecurie des Monceaux has been responsible for such top-class names as Sottsass (Fr), Sistercharlie (Ire), Magic Wand (Ire) and Chicquita (Ire).  “She's a really good filly. She showed class at two but you never know how they will improve at three. Mikel was very confident that he had her right at home. It is fantastic to own her and have bred her in partnership–it's a good advertisement for racing.”

The Monceaux draft regularly tops the Arqana August Yearling Sale. The one in which Mangoustine appeared in 2020 was rebranded as the Deauville Select Sale when Covid forced it to be delayed by a month. Mangoustine was retained by the farm at €46,000 when failing to reach her reserve, and the team will obviously be relieved still to have her, not just because she is now a Classic winner, but also because her dam was sold later that year to Blue Diamond Stud at the Arqana December Sale for €75,000. 

“But we have Mangoustine and we are so happy to have her,” said a smiling Bozo.

Blue Diamond's owner Imad Al Sagar bought two mares that same day, the other being Manasarova (More Than Ready) from Haras de Saint Pair, and her daughter Sicilian Defense (Fr) also ran in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, finishing seventh, just over two lengths behind the winner.

Blue Diamond Stud's bloodstock and media advisor Nancy Sexton reported at Longchamp that Zotilla has a “very nice” Too Darn Hot (GB) filly foal and is now in foal to Dubawi. The mare's 2-year-old colt from the first European crop of Zoustar (Aus) was bought by Sam Sangster for 35,000gns at Tattersalls last October.

Al Sagar has a potential Classic star of his own to look forward to in the coming weeks following the impressive success at Newbury on Saturday of homebred Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Twilight Jet Too Fast In The Lacken

There was no catching Michael and Julia Iavarone and Michael O'Callaghan's Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) in Sunday's G3 Goffs Lacken S. at Naas as he led from pillar to post in a dynamic display of speed. Sent off at 9-2, last year's G3 Cornwallis S. winner was quicker than Ballydoyle's 6-5 favourite New York City (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) at every step and gave generously for Leigh Roche to beat that Listed Committed S. scorer by three lengths. The returning G3 Anglesey S. winner Beauty Inspire (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was withdrawn after going down in the stalls. “He missed six weeks in the spring, we just swam him for six weeks, and if this was three weeks ago he wouldn't have been ready,” O'Callaghan explained. “He's just come right and that makes it all the more impressive to me, knowing how his prep went during the spring.”

Highly-tried at two, Twilight Jet went unplaced in his first four tries at group company before finally getting in the frame in one when third in the G2 Gimcrack S. at York in August. Upped to seven furlongs for the first time when third in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster the following month, the bay was 1 1/2-lengths fifth in Newmarket's G1 Middle Park S. a fortnight later before coming back to that track to take the five-furlong Cornwallis by storm. Only 10th in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar, he put that rare disappointing performance in the past here to crack Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) before denying New York City any prospect of a fistfight.

“He always looked like one that could improve with time, he's a fine big horse,” his trainer added. “He has a bit of class and has a lot of natural speed. He's going to improve for the run today, I've no doubt Leigh is going to tell me that he had a blow. He took plenty of pulling up and galloped down to the third fence down the back before he got him pulled up. In the Middle Park last year, he showed his class but just didn't see out the six furlongs. I think this year he looks strong enough to go to Royal Ascot for the [G1] Commonwealth Cup with a big chance.”

“Michael and Julia Iavarone, whose colours he runs in, used to own Big Brown who won the Kentucky Derby and they bought into 50% of him to go to the Breeders Cup. I'm just delighted that he's come out this year as a three-year-old and he's furnished and he's gone and done it. We always thought he was probably a group 1 horse. He's trained on now over the winter and proved that he justifies being classed as something that's maybe a group 1 horse this year.”

Twilight Jet, who was a €28,000 discovery by Tally Ho Stud at the 2020 Goffs February Mixed Sale before returning a smart profit of £210,000 when purchased at last year's Goffs UK 2yo Breeze Up Sale, is the last foal out of My Lucky Liz (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). She is a half to the stakes scorer Bredenbury (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and the Listed Stonehenge S. winner Go Angellica (Ire) Kheleyf). This is the family of the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Germany and the leading sire Hail Bold King.

Dubawi’s Modern Games Provides Godolphin With Another Guineas

This year's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains proved as straightforward as the 2021 version, with the key form horse enjoying an ideal draw and ideal trip in the ParisLongchamp Classic. This time, it was Godolphin and Charlie Appleby who were at the forefront as Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) brought up a Guineas double for the stable by following the example of Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) at Newmarket. Leaving the stalls with so much gusto he knuckled under William Buick, last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G3 Tattersalls S. winner was undeterred and soon enjoyed the cat-bird seat as the wide-drawn outsider Texas (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) forged on with the ultimately disappointing Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) and Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}). Driven to head the resilient Texas with 300 metres remaining, the 2-1 favourite stayed on strongly deny that 113-1 shot the shock outcome by 1 1/4 lengths. The other Godolphin runner Tribalist was 3/4 of a length behind in third in a race where being on the pace was crucial.

“I said to William to try and jump out and make it if he had to, but he hit the lids so quick he nearly stumbled,” commented Appleby, who was landing his first Poulains. “It was a good genuine gallop and he showed his class again. We are very fortunate to have the horses we have and I just spoke to His Highness and it would be nice to try and keep them apart for as long as we can. I always had it in the back of my mind that he might be a French Derby [Prix du Jockey Club] horse, so it will be interesting to see what William says.”

In the shadow of Coroebus and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) at Moulton Paddocks prior to this, Modern Games only really began to take off when taking a seven-furlong nursery at Doncaster's St Leger meeting having won one of his first three starts. Next up was the Tattersalls S., where he first advertised his prowess with a comprehensive defeat of the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) before overcoming the much-publicised stalls drama at Del Mar to take the Juvenile Turf by storm.

Once the draw was made, this was as easy for Modern Games as it was for St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) 12 months ago and no sooner had Buick sent him forward from the break was the outcome more or less decided. Claymore and Texas had used up too much petrol sent to the front from stalls 16 and 15 respectively, while Tribalist was always entering into an unfair contest with the operation's number one. Despite the winner's obvious authority in the closing stages, the race's story was the amazing effort of the Listed Criterium du Languedoc winner Texas, who was absurdly-priced given that he was only beaten 1 1/2 lengths when fourth in the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau. Clement Lecoeuvre felt he had no option but to go straight to the firing line from that compromising stall and it turned out to be a masterstroke which almost resulted in one of the race's all-time shocks.

Modern Games will seek to emulate St Mark's Basilica and three others in adding the G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club to this Classic and Appleby is convinced he has what it takes. “He's a neat horse who has got stronger over the winter–a typical Dubawi with a great mindset–and he brought bundles of experience into this. We saw what he had to take on board at the Breeders' Cup and he took all that rigmarole and drama like a true professional. That is a big mark up in my book and if they can do that normally it puts them in good stead for the big day. He's so game and honest, the distance of the Jockey Club is definitely worth a crack with him. We're very spoilt with the three colts that we have and I see no reason not to let this horse have a go at it.”

Buick believes he will be a perfect fit for the 10 1/2-furlong Chantilly Classic. “He went through the gears nicely and is one who keeps finding all the way to the line. Bits and bobs in his pedigree suggest he will stay and I think it seems like a natural step for him. He feels like a very experienced horse and in the Jockey Club, you need a lot of tactical pace. It can sometimes be a difficult race and I think he ticks a lot of boxes for the race.”

Texas is sticking to a mile from here, according to trainer Henri François Devin. “My horse ran a blinder,” he said. “It was a great performance and we are all delighted. I knew he had come on a lot for the run in the Fontainebleau and he got a good trip and a good ride. A mile is his limit, so we will now target the [G3] Prix Paul de Moussac or the [G1] Prix Jean Prat.”

Modern Games, whose 2-year-old half-sister Mawj (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) earned TDN Rising Star status at Newmarket on Saturday, is the fourth foal out of Modern Ideals (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) who is also responsible for the recent impressive Listed Windsor S. scorer Modern News (GB) (Shamardal). Modern Ideals is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), the G3 Prix Minerve winner Synopsis (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Epic Similie (GB) (Lomitas {GB}), with the latter also being responsible for the G2 July S. and G3 Sirenia S. runner-up Figure of Speech (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The family features the GII Canadian H. scorer Calista (GB) (Caerleon), the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Champion S. heroine Bosra Sham (Woodman) and the 1991 and 1992 Poulains heroes Hector Protector and Shanghai. Dark Angel’s Mangoustine Denies Cachet In the Pouliches

Tony Parker's Infinity Nine Horses was in the limelight at ParisLongchamp on Sunday as the Mikel Delzangles-trained Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) denied Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) the G1 1000 Guineas-G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches double in a frantic finale. Having surrendered her unbeaten record when third in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de la Grotte Apr. 17, last year's G3 Prix Miesque winner was back on track where it mattered under one of the world's most journeyed and accomplished jockeys in Gerald Mossé. Settled behind the leading quartet early despite being caught wide, the 10-1 shot swooped on the leader Cachet with a furlong remaining and it was nip-and-tuck from there to the line. When it came, the Newmarket Classic heroine was rallying gamely but the grey still had a head to spare, with Times Square (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) closing in with every stride to finish a short head away in third in a blanket finish. “We didn't get cover but I thought, 'don't panic' and she really gave me a good feel and fought to the line. The English filly was tough, but she had kept something in the locker,” Mossé said. “When you ride one on a day like this, with that crowd, it reminds me of the old days. For the time being, I'll keep riding and keep my training licence in my pocket.”

Trained by Frederic Rossi last term, Mangoustine who was a €46,000 purchase by David Redvers at the 2020 Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale was three-for-three with a Deauville introduction followed by Lyon-Parilly's Listed Criterium de Lyon over a mile and Chantilly's G3 Prix Miesque at seven furlongs. Sharpened by her return in the Grotte, she was able to draft close up in the initial stages of this race which acted as a precursor of what was to come in the Poulains. With the eventual first three in the first five early on, the front end was the place to be at ParisLongchamp on Sunday and it is to the winner's credit that she gave the 1000 Guineas winner a two-length headstart before running her down. Her penultimate furlong of 10.82 was the fine margin which told in the end as the first eight were covered by just over two lengths.

Delzangles is thinking of Royal Ascot for the winner now. “We hadn't planned to be where we were, but she was very relaxed and it was a good pace,” he said. “I wasn't surprised that she was beaten in her trial, as she was well but not at 100%. She needed a bit of time to come out of the winter and everything looked perfect after the Grotte. A mile is her distance, so she might go to the [G1] Coronation.”

George Boughey said of the gallant runner-up, who was not asked to race as hard early as she had been at Newmarket, “She ran a blinder. She was tenacious again there and did the donkey work and battled back when they joined her. I'm sure there are other races in her and it's a huge compliment to her just two weeks after the Guineas. The draw possibly cost us, as she had to give up a little bit of ground from that and she'll go to the Coronation now.”

Mangoustine, whose 2-year-old half-brother by Zoustar (Aus) was a 35,000gns Book 2 purchase by Sam Sangster Bloodstock, is out of a half-sister to another Pouliches heroine in Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast), who also annexed the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her dam Zotilla (Ire) (Zamindar), who also has a filly foal by Too Darn Hot (GB), is a daughter of the GIII Miesque S. winner Louvain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and therefore a half to the Listed Prix Right Royal winner Big Five (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the stakes-winning Louvakhova (Maria's Mon). She is in turn the dam of G3 Gallinule S. winner Crossfirehurricane (Kitten's Joy) and the Listed Patton S. winner My Generation (Speightstown).

Louvain is a daughter of the listed-winning sprinter Flanders (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}), who also finished runner-up in the G2 King's Stand S. before producing the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). She is a half-sister to the dam of the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 July Cup-winning sire Lethal Force (Ire) by Mangoustine's sire Dark Angel, while this is also the family of the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Family One (Fr) (Dubai Destination) and the G2 Rockfel S. winner Juliet Capulet (Ire) also by Dark Angel.
