LNJ Foxwoods Re-Focuses Stable

The Roth family's LNJ Foxwoods announced plans to move its Southern California-based horses east and re-focus its racing stable on the East Coast, Canada and Kentucky circuits. A Sunday afternoon tweet from Jaime Roth read, “LNJ Foxwoods has made the difficult decision to take a break from having horses stabled year-round in Southern California. With our family based in New York and one of our advisors, Alex Solis, II of Solis/Litt, having relocated to Lexington, we would like to focus on the East Coast, Canada and Kentucky circuits at this time. Our horses in training in Southern California will be moved east to continue their careers under the care of Josie Carroll, Brad Cox, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, and Brendan Walsh.”

Roth continued, “We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Southern California and celebrated many milestones there, including winning the GI Breeders' Cup F&M Sprint with Covfefe at Santa Anita. In particular, we would like to thank Richard Mandella and his team for their tireless work and dedication to our horses and all those in his care. Richard has done a terrific job for our stable and we have enjoyed so much success together.”

In the same tweet, Roth announced the retirement of the family's multiple graded stakes winner United (Giant's Causeway). Trained by Mandella, the 7-year-old gelding won the 2020 and 2021 renewals of the GII John Henry Turf Championship S., as well as the 2021 GII Eddie Read S. He was second in the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Turf. On the board in 15 of 22 starts, United won 10 times and earned $1,813,549.

“He will remain a part of the LNJ family and is being retired as our riding horse in Kentucky, where we hope he will enjoy his second career just as much as his first,” Roth tweeted.LNJ

‘White Wonder’ Sodashi Thrills With Victoria Mile Win In Tokyo, Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth

Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co. Ltd.'s homebred Sodashi powered to the front in deep stretch and prevailed by two lengths over Fine Rouge in the Victoria Mile (G1) at Tokyo Racecourse.

With the victory, the striking all white filly, dubbed the 'White Wonder,' earned an automatic starting position and fees paid into the $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) in November at Keeneland through the Win And You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

A 4-year-old daughter of Kurofune trained by Nausuke Sugai and ridden by Hayato Yoshida, Sodashi joins Captain's Ransom, winner of the Cartier Paddock Stakes (G1) in South Africa on Jan. 8, as the first two horses this year to gain free berths into the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Breaking sharply from stall five in a field of 18 fillies and mares as the 5-1 fourth choice, Sodashi raced along the rail in fourth behind pacesetter Rosa Noir, who stayed in front through the top of the stretch. Resistencia, the 12-1 sixth choice, then ranged up and moved into second. At this point, Yoshida maneuvered Sodashi slightly to the outside and she broke loose passing the 200-meter mark, powering in between Rosa Noir and Resistencia with an impressive late drive.

In winning her third Group 1 race, Sodashi completed the mile in 1:32.20 over a course listed as good to firm.

“The filly was relaxed and in good condition when I rode her in the post parade,” said Yoshida. “Once she entered the gate, she was focused and was able to make a good break and I was able to ride her in good rhythm while holding down her pace. She responded well in the stretch when I urged her to go. As today's race included a very strong field, it was like a dream for a white horse to be able to win a Group 1 race at Tokyo Racecourse.”

Sodashi improved her record to seven wins in 11 starts. She finished third last time out in the February Stakes (G1) on dirt at Tokyo on Feb. 20, a Win And You're In for the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Sunday's victory was her first since defeating last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Loves Only You in the 1 ¼-mile Sapporo Kinen (G2) on Aug. 22.

Runner-up Fine Rouge struggled to find a clear path on the turn for home, but showed a persistent turn of foot to close in on the winner, passing her rivals one by one. Though unable to catch Sodashi, Fine Rouge won a four-horse rally to secure a runner-up spot by a neck over Resistencia.  Rosa Noir finished fourth, followed by Songline in fifth. Daring Act, the 2020 Japanese Filly Triple Crown winner, who was making her first start in more than a year, finished sixth. Lei Papale (JPN), the 4-1 favorite, was in third place entering the stretch, but faded to 12th.

Sodashi's dam is the King Kamehameha mare Buchiko, who also is white as was her grandam Shirayukihime, by Sunday Silence.

More Commonwealth Clues on Monday

After Tiber Flow (Ire) (Caravaggio) and Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) advertised their claims for Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup this weekend, it is the turn of Al Shaqab Racing's Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) to put his name in the hat in Monday's G3 Prix Texanita at Chantilly. The G1 Phoenix S. hero was a disappointing fifth on his return in the six-furlong G3 Abernant S. at Newmarket Apr. 13, but he has plenty in hand on his seven rivals on his best form. One who could make a jump is The Aga Khan's Apr. 27 Fontainebleau maiden winner Haziym (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), a major eyecatcher on pedigree in a sprint as a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained relative of Harzand (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

Sodashi Tops Victoria Mile

Juvenile filly champion Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) punched her ticket to this fall's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf with a victory in Sunday's G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo Racecourse. The top three finishers in Sunday's race also earned automatic berths in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp as well as the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

Breaking alertly from stall 5, the fourth betting choice settled in along the inside in a close-up fourth before moving slightly outward for the stretch run. Emerging from the pack passing the 200-meter pole, the 4-year-old caught pacesetter Rosa Noir (Jpn) (Manhattan Café {Jpn}) late and drew clear to win by two lengths over the closing Fine Rouge (Jpn) (Kizuna (Jpn}). Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) was a neck back in third, nosing out the pacesetter.

Sodashi reeled off four consecutive wins at two, capping off the season with a win in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies while earning a championship in the process. Victorious in the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) in her sophomore debut, the striking grey was well beaten in the Japanese Oaks at Tokyo in May but bounced back to take the G2 Sapporo Kinen later that summer. Well beaten in her final two starts of the season in the Oct. 17 G1 Shuka Sho and G1 Champion's Cup Dec. 5, she returned at four with a credible third over the course in the Feb. 20 G1 February S. last time out.
