Gallinule Success For Zoffany’s Hannibal Barca

Last seen finishing a close-up fourth in Doncaster's G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy in October, Ecurie Ama Zingteam's acquisition Hannibal Barca (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) made his debut for his owners and the Joseph O'Brien stable a successful one in Friday's G3 Heider Family Stables Gallinule S. at The Curragh. Sent off the 7-4 favourite, the bay was keen under restraint early held up towards the rear by Shane Crosse before being angled out at the top of the straight. Reeling in Lyrical Poetry (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and hitting the front with 150 yards remaining, he asserted to beat that rival by a length as the luckless Boundless Ocean (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) wound up 1 3/4 lengths back in third having been stopped in his run at a crucial stage. “He was obviously a good two-year-old, we just had a little hold-up so we ended up starting today,” the winning trainer said. “I thought he did well, because I thought it set up for the horses closer to the speed. Coming here, I wasn't sure how far we would be going but looking at the race you'd be going further rather than shorter.”

Hannibal Barca, who was two lengths behind Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) at Doncaster having won a seven-furlong Salisbury novice in September, was a 500,000gns purchase at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale. The dam Innocent Air (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was a dual listed scorer for Juddmonte and hails from the family of the top-level scorers Proportional (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), Folk Opera (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}), Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and Mr Bailetti (Arg) (Exchange Rate). She has 2-year-old and yearling full-sisters to Hannibal Barca to come, with the former named Zoinnocent (Ire) having been bought by Eric Long for €210,000 at the Goffs Orby.

Asmussen Seeks Sixth Chick Lang Win

Steve Asmussen looks to take his sixth renewal of the GIII Chick Lang S.–and third straight–Saturday at Pimlico with Cogburn (Not This Time). Graduating at second asking at Churchill Downs in September, he kicked off his sophomore season on a winning note with a decisive optional claimer score at Oaklawn Mar. 25. He came up a neck short of re-opposing Whelen Springs (Street Sense) last time in that venue's Bachelor S. Apr. 30.

That Arkansas-bred rival took five tries to break his maiden, finally doing so against other locals in Hot Springs Mar. 26. He romped in the state-bred Rainbow S. there Apr. 9 and took the Bachelor just three weeks later.

Old Homestead (Overanalyze) looks to take his record to a perfect four-for-four in this event. Earning his diploma by 11 1/2 lengths at Delta Downs in January, the bay captured an allowance there next out Mar. 4. He took his show on the road and proved he could success at a top venue with a win in Keeneland's Lafayette S. Apr. 8.

Lope de Vega Colt Wins The Cocked Hat

The only maiden in the line-up for Goodwood's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat S. on Friday, Normandie Stud's Lionel (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) emerged on top of a tight finale to step into the frame for the Irish Derby. Sent off at 17-2 on the back of a promising third behind the re-opposing Natural World (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the subsequent Listed Fairway S. winner Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in an 11-furlong Newbury maiden Apr. 16, the bay was settled with one behind early by Jamie Spencer as Frankie Dettori dictated on Aldous Huxley (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Off the bridle before the turn for home, the chestnut kept responding to build a head of steam and wear down that 7-4 favourite in the final yards and prevail by a neck, with Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) half a length away in third.

Lionel's trainer David Menuisier is aiming high now. “He is in at Royal Ascot and he is in the Irish Derby and he is in the Grand Prix de Paris in July. At the moment, when I say Ascot, I can't write off the Queen's Vase. I can't write off the King Edward VII and can't write off the Irish Derby,” he said of the winner, who was withdrawn from the Derby. “He had no luck at Newbury. I think he is a very good horse, I have always said that, but he wants to be a grown up to win at Epsom and he is not. I think he will handle any ground, but I don't want it to be too quick on unconventional tracks. On a nice, big galloping track, he will be fine.”

“Doncaster in September is a good possibility. The dam won a group 2 there and he will stay well in time, but he has got the pace to win over one mile and four. I think the Curragh over one mile four sounds like a good idea. He is entered in the Arc and entered everywhere.” Lysander was not immediately ruled out of the Derby, with Harry Herbert saying, “It wasn't a bad run, but the ground was too soft for him. He had a hard race, but I would hold on to those Derby tickets a while longer. We will see how he takes this.”

As Menuisier stated, Lionel is the first runner for the G2 Park Hill S. and Listed Chalice S. winner Gretchen (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of Dolores (GB) (Danehill) who captured the Listed Conqueror S. here and was second in the G2 Sun Chariot S. and third in the G1 Coronation S. Her sons Duncan (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and Samuel (GB) (Sakhee) enjoyed career-highs when dead-heating in the G1 Irish St Leger and winning the G2 Doncaster Cup respectively, while another daughter Deirdre (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was third in the Listed Height of Fashion S. on this card in 2010. She has the unraced 2-year-old colt Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) and a colt foal by Kingman (GB).
