Frankel’s Westover Prevails In the Classic Trial

Last year's G3 Sandown Classic Trial was a momentous renewal and Friday's is another to keep a close eye on after a trio of likely types finished clear led home by Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Last seen finishing runner-up in Pontefract's Listed Silver Tankard S. in October, Juddmonte's imposing bay raced freely for Rob Hornby tracking the 6-5 favourite Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) throughout the early stages. Edging ahead a furlong from home, the 5-1 shot was initially wayward but honest enough to give extra and hold off the late surge of the highly promising TDN Rising Star Cash (Ire) (Shamardal) by a short head. Fellow TDN Rising Star Goldspur, whose juvenile form included a win in the G3 Zetland S. and a third placing in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, provided the ballast to the form, a length further away in third. “He's a beast, a serious unit, and we always thought he'd be better at three,” Hornby said. “He had a roll around in front, but got his head down on the line when it mattered. For a big horse, he's pretty well-balanced and is quite light on his feet.”

Westover, whose debut resulted in a success over a mile here in August, was also second to Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in Newbury's renowned Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. prior to the Silver Tankard. He had a distinct experience edge over the eye-catching runner-up as a result and Cash's trainer David Simcock was understandably buoyed by the performance of Earle Mack's exciting prospect. “He's come home strong, stayed the 10 furlongs well and showed a good turn of foot,” he said of the second, who had missed the break after proving difficult to load. “We've got a long time to go [until the Derby] and things like having another run first to think about. I'm not going to make any calls now, but it looks like we've got quite a nice horse on our hands and it looks like he'll stay well.”

Pedigree Notes:

Westover is the 10th foal out of Mirabilis (Lear Fan), who captured the GIII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile and was placed in the G1 Prix de la Foret, GII Jenny Wiley S. and GII Buena Vista H. His full-brother Monarchs Glen (GB), who was a disappointing fourth as the odds-on favourite in the 2017 edition of this race, went on to prove that form all wrong with successes in the G3 Darley Club S., Listed Wolferton S. and Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial S. The GII Buena Vista H.-winning second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) is the producer of a former Juddmonte star in Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), heroine of the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, while the family also features the G2 Prix Eugene Adam scorer Burning Sun (Danzig) and group and graded-stakes winners Mallory (Aus) (Not a Single Doubt {Aus}) and Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy). Also connected to the G3 Earl of Sefton S.-winning sire Phoenix Tower (Chester House), Mirabilis's 2-year-old filly Jalapa (GB) is by Expert Eye (GB).

Notable US-Breds in Japan: April 24, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Fukushima Racecourses. Group 1 racing in Japan returns next weekend with the stayers center stage in the Tenno Sho (Spring) over two miles, but this Sunday's action sees the return of a pair of very exciting American-bred gallopers at the lower grades:

Sunday, April 24, 2022
6th-HSN, ¥14,250,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo, 1400m
CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale on the occasion of her second birthday after the daughter of 2009 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly She Be Wild zipped an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The dark bay began chipping away at that investment when lengthening clear to graduate by seven lengths going this distance on Chukyo debut Jan. 29 (video, SC 10) and figures tough to handle in this second go. B-Nancy Mazzoni (KY)

9th-FKS, ¥19,530,000 ($152k), Allowance, 3yo, 1200mT
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 3, Gun Runner–Fiducia, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the first winner on turf from his exciting sire (by Candy Ride {Arg})'s first crop when carrying Yutaka Take to a one-length debut in one of last year's early newcomers' races at Sapporo June 20 (see below, SC 16). Ticketed for group company off that effort, he suffered an injury which has kept him on the sidelines for the past 10 months. The colt's stakes-winning and Group 3-placed dam is a daughter of champion Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who is also responsible for MGSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy) and MSW & MGSP Faridat (Kingmambo). B-North Hills Co Limited (KY)

11th-HSN, Yomiuri Milers' Cup-G2, ¥114m ($890k), 4/up, 1mT
AIR FANDITHA (h, 5, Hat Trick {Jpn}–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) is one of four winners from four to race out of a winning half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), whose daughter Yuugiri (Shackleford) will carry the silks of these breeders in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks after winning the GIII Fantasy S. last time out. Air Fanditha became the second black-type winner out of Nokaze when coming from a near-impossible position to score in listed company over this course and distance Feb. 12 (see below, SC 6). The four winners out of the mare, including GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), have combined to win an impressive 16 times on the extremely competitive JRA circuit. B-Sekie & Tsunebumi Yoshihara (KY)

Fonner Files: Bringing Jurassic Park To Fonner Park

Fonner Park CEO Chris Kotulak shares slices of life from the Grand Island, Neb., racetrack throughout the 2022 meet in the Fonner Files.

After sitting in boxes for over two years due to covid, 14 T-Rex costumes were unpacked, without any “rex-rot,” and the inaugural Battle of the Rexes – T-Rex Racing for Charity – was conducted at Fonner Park on Saturday, April 16.

Male and female preliminary races provided for the Battle of the Rexes, which was comprised of the top finishers of each division.

In the big finale, Louis Kaelin was chasing in second-place when the leader, Cody Rush, tripped over his tail and fell. Kaelin assumed the lead and sprinted home safely to victory. Louis earned $100 for his win and $300 will be donated to the GISH Touchdown Club.

Brandon Rohr finished 4 ½ T-Rex lengths behind in second to earn $200 for Compass of Kearney. Johnny Price, closed with a torrid threatening late rush, only to fall (literally) short just before the finish line but recover and narrowly finish third. His effort was worth a $100 donation to the Heartland Events Center.

The event was presented by Equitable Bank, which provided the funding and the charity/non-profit donations and prize allocations to the participants. Brian Gallagher of GI Family Radio was the emcee.

Carleton Burke Equine Literature Collection To Be Digitized By Cal Poly

The California Thoroughbred Foundation is donating the contents of the Carleton F. Burke Library in Arcadia— one of the most extensive collections of equine literature found anywhere—to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

“This is such a rare and specialized collection that it is a great match with an academic library,” said Foundation President Ada Gates Patton. “Officials from Cal Poly Pomona approached us about acquiring the library, with proposed expert management of books and increased public access.

“The Foundation does not have resources like those at Cal Poly. In addition, with more and more material available on the Internet, in-person use of the library decreased in recent years, followed by a two-year closure because of the pandemic. So after studying the proposal carefully, our board voted for the donation. This will benefit anyone interested in publications about horses, whether for serious study or just pleasure reading.”

The university intends to digitize research books for worldwide access, exposing the Burke Library to a far wider audience than the Foundation could offer.

“We have been privileged to own this unique collection and open it to the public, and we look forward to its professional preservation and even wider availability at Cal Poly Pomona,” said Gates Patton.

The Burke Library has been housed in the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association building in Arcadia, across the street from Santa Anita Park. One positive factor influencing the decision was that the collection will remain nearby, as Pomona is just 20 miles from Arcadia.

“The Burke Library has long been an important resource for many in the horse world,” said CTBA President Doug Burge. “The CTBA has been proud to have the library on our premises, but we understand that its care and accessibility will be greatly enhanced at Cal Poly Pomona.”

Carleton F. Burke was the first chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, director of racing at Santa Anita, and a secretary-treasurer of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. He died in 1962, and the following year the library was named for him in recognition of his contributions to racing.
