Poker Betting Methods

You must have developed a great betting strategy playing the regular limit, no-limit and pot-limit games. Now let’s see some other methods of betting involved mainly in private games. I will just cover a few for example Set limit, Straddle method, Freeze out and Running out of money. So let’s discuss each of them. These methods bring in a lot of excitement and fun when playing private games.

Set limit:
Here players agree to a minimum and maximum bet where there is enough opportunity for them to make good raises. It is important because if you raise a decent amount of chips then you might force other players into folding. Also there is an agreement on a minimum ante by every player before the cards are dealt, so, there is some money in the pot before you start playing. To stay in the game each player must bet an amount equal to the previous player or raise the stakes up to the maximum as agreed before the play.

Straddle Method:
Here first a player bets an ante and the next player doubles the bet called straddle before the cards are dealt. Now the third player can either fold or double the straddle depending on his cards. The betting continues and each player must bet at least the same amount as the previous player. Here showdown occurs when no one else raises or the maximum bet is reached as agreed before the play.

Freeze Out:
Here the betting is same as in regular games but with few exceptions. Betting is arranged using an agreed method and the objective is for one player to win all the chips. When a player runs out of chips, there is an immediate showdown and the player with the best hand wins the pot. Games like these are already marked as Freeze out tournaments.

Running out of money:
Again the betting here is same as in regular games but with few exceptions. If a player runs out of money during the game a second pot is opened by the remaining players. Now that player has to wait until one player remains or there is a showdown. If one player remains then he definitely wins the second pot or else a player with the highest hand wins the pot. Now the hand that won the second pot is compared to that of the player who ran out of money. The player with the best hand wins the first or original pot.

Secret Oath Brings ‘Thumbprint’ Legend To Kentucky Oaks

The ultra-talented 3-year-old filly Secret Oath was so dominant over her female competition at Oaklawn Park that her trainer, Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, decided to run her against males in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Though she had a tough trip and could only manage third on the day, Secret Oath remains poised as one of the top fillies headed to this year's Kentucky Oaks.

She'll bring along with her the story of an age-old equine legend from the Thoroughbred's long-ago ancestor, the Arabian.

It is said that the Prophet Muhammad wandered the desert with his herd of Arabian mares for many days. Finally approaching an oasis, he sent the mares forth to allow them a drink. Before they reached the water, however, the prophet called them back. Only five of the mares stopped and returned to him. In honor of their loyalty, he blessed the mares by pressing his thumbprint into their necks.

It is believed that a horse with such a mark will be outstanding because they are a descendant of one of the broodmares that the prophet, Muhammad, truly treasured.

Secret Oath has a mark on the left side of her neck which echoes the legend, often called the “Prophet's thumbprint” or “God's thumbprint.”

Several veterinary theories as to the cause of such a mark exist; it may be caused by an injury, or by the pressure of a hoof or the umbilical cord while in utero.

Owner and breeder Robert Mitchell (of Briland Farm) said the filly was not born with the mark, but instead it appeared late in her yearling year. There was no other mark or issue to indicate an injury, so Mitchell isn't sure where it came from.

“Maybe Muhammad knew she was a special filly,” Mitchell said, laughing.

The Mitchells' entrance into the Thoroughbred industry began with a $1 broodmare named Chao Praya. Mated to Level Sands (Storm Cat) for a fee of $1,500, the mare produced Level Playingfield, who became a graded stakes winner, multiple stakes winner, and a track record-setter.

That success led the Mitchells to purchase another mare, Rockford Peach, who would become the dam of their stakes-winning $600,000 earner Absinthe Minded, the dam of Secret Oath.

“I really liked Secret Oath when she was born,” said Mitchell. “We sent her to Keeneland (for the September sale), and I think they're pretty knowledgeable, but they put her in session 5. Her dam had won three stakes races and placed in five graded stakes, the filly was from Arrogate's first crop, but she was put in session 5. Not a lot of people looked at her so I took her out of the sale the day before she was supposed to go. I thought, 'If no one wants her, she looks just like her mom and sister so I will race her myself.'”

Secret Oath winning the Honeybee at Oaklawn

A 7 ¼-length winner of Oaklawn's Martha Washington Stakes and 7 ½-length winner of the G3 Honeybee, the filly was quick to stamp herself as one to watch on the Kentucky Oaks trail.

In the Arkansas Derby, Secret Oath was bothered at the break and shuffled back, forced six-wide at the three-eighths pole, and made a huge mid-race move only to flatten out in the final furlong. She was beaten 3 ½ lengths by the winner, Cyberknife.

“People smarter than me said she ran 60 feet farther than the winner,” Mitchell said. “They don't have the GPS there at Oaklawn, but people are saying she ran 60 feet farther than the winner.”

Despite her defeat in the Arkansas Derby, Secret Oath remains one of the top choices for what could shape up to be one of the most competitive Kentucky Oaks races in recent memory.

“Nest is incredible, Kathleen O. is incredible, and Echo Zulu has never lost in her life,” Mitchell said. “You know, the favorite wins a third of the time in this business. When else in your life does everyone say you're the favorite and two-thirds of the time you're a loser?

“What ultimately means something is the finish line at Churchill Downs.”

Galaxina Pulls 24-1 Upset In Park Avenue Division of NY Stallion Stakes

Ascendant Farms' homebred Galaxina displayed tactical speed to secure a 24-1 victory in Sunday's $200,000 Park Avenue division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series, a 6 1/2-furlong main track sprint for eligible New York-sired sophomore fillies, at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Galaxina, by Giant Surprise, was sent to post as the longest shot in a six-horse field and rewarded her backers with a cool $50 for a $2 win wager.

The dynamics of the race were altered at the break when 1-5 favorite Yo Cuz broke poorly from the inside post and was unable to secure her usual front-running style. With Yo Cuz in last, Starship Laoban secured control of the pace, leading through an opening quarter-mile in 23.49 seconds over the fast main track. Galaxina tracked right off the flank of the pacesetter in second and came under a drive by Trevor McCarthy around the far turn with Yo Cuz in pursuit from the four path.

Galaxina and Starship Laoban engaged in battle in the stretch run with Bank On Anna keeping close company 3 1/2 lengths back in third. Galaxina inched past a stubborn Starship Laoban at the sixteenth pole to win her stakes debut by a length in a final time of 1:18.08.

Starship Laoban finished another 2 1/2 lengths to the better of third-place finisher Bank On Anna. Yo Cuz, Celebrity News and Kisses for Emily completed the order of finish. Gris Tormenta was scratched.

“She warmed up really well and broke really sharp,” said McCarthy, who also piloted Kazmike to victory in Saturday's NYSSS Times Square. “I was able to get her to turn off nice and sit second. When she made that burst turning for home, she gave me everything she had.”

Galaxina cut back in distance for trainer Jimmy Bond, arriving at the NYSSS Park Avenue off a gate-to-wire maiden score at seven furlongs on February 26 at Aqueduct. The maiden victory came five weeks after finishing second on debut to eventual dual stakes-placed Stone Creator on January 16.

McCarthy piloted the filly in both of her previous starts and said she was well prepared for the race.

“She has been training really good and feeling really good coming into this,” McCarthy said. “I give a lot of credit to the Bonds. She's a filly that probably looked a little under class, but with the right trip today and the way she's been training, I expected her to run really good.”

Yo Cuz, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott for Dream Maker Racing, entered off a trio of stakes scores at the Big A. She captured the NYSSS Fifth Avenue in December ahead of scores against fellow New York-breds in the Maddie May in February and the East View in March.

Jose Ortiz, aboard Yo Cuz, said his filly's chances were hampered at the break.

“She broke the first jump good, but the second jump she grabbed her quarter a little bit. It happens,” Ortiz said. “The main thing is to get her right. I still think she's the best horse in the division. She's a very nice filly. She was just unlucky today.”

Galaxina banked $110,000 in victory and over tripled her lifetime earnings which now stand at $162,500 through a 3-2-1-0 record.  A New York homebred, Galaxina is out of the Lawyer Ron mare Strange Magic, whose dam, Lokoya Red, is a half sister to 2008 champion turf female Forever Together.

Decision Expected Soon On Early Voting’s KY Derby Status

Klaravich Stables' Early Voting worked a half-mile under exercise rider Marino Garcia Saturday morning in :49.92 in company with Southern District over the Belmont Park dirt training track.

NYRA clockers caught the pair through splits of :13.80, :26.40, and out in 1:02.20.

The Gun Runner sophomore, who ranks 14th on the Kentucky Derby (G1) leaderboard with 50 points, has made all three career starts at Aqueduct, winning the Grade 3 Withers in February ahead of a runner-up effort last out in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial.

Southern District, a 4-year-old Union Rags colt also owned by Klaravich Stables, garnered a career-best 100 Beyer Speed Figure last out in a one-turn mile allowance score on February 5 at Aqueduct.

Brown said a decision will come soon on whether Early Voting will contest the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 7 at Churchill Downs or wait for the Preakness (G1) on May 21 at Pimlico Race Course.

“The work went fine. He worked easy. It was his first work back and he was moving well,” said Brown, who won the 2017 Preakness with Cloud Computing. “We haven't made any final decision yet on what we're doing in terms of the Derby, but I want to talk to Mr. Klarman about it this afternoon a little bit more.”
