Old Homestead Continues to ‘Appreciate’ with Lafayette Victory

Old Homestead continues his perfect, albeit young, career with a commanding victory in the Lafayette S. on Keeneland's opening day of the spring meet. The Florida-bred began his career with an 11 1/2 length blow out Jan. 28 at Delta Downs, finding no competitor against an open field of maidens at five furlongs. Staying sprinting on the main track at the venue, it was a similarly devastating performance against an allowance field as Old Homestead coasted home by 5 3/4 uncontested lengths.

Stepping into stakes company, the Brett Brinkman trainee was sent off at 8-1 odds and it was second verse, same as the first: the colt broke on top, commanded the early pace, and pulled away from competition in the stretch under steady urging to win by 3 3/4 lengths despite not changing leads until the final sixteenth. Surfer Dude tracked from second all the way around and held his spot in the lane.

The winner is his dam's first foal and stakes winner. He has a 2-year-old half-sister by Astern (Aus) named Cora Pearl and the mare delivered a 2022 filly by Practical Joke. This is the family of Italian Group 1-placed runner Without Connexion (Ire),  Grade I Frizette S. winner Yellow Agate (Gemologist), and six other group or graded runners. Sy Dog Keeps Perfect Record Intact With Last-To-First Transylvania Win

With jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. biding his time in last place until rounding the final turn, Head of Plains Partners LLC's Sy Dog rallied in the stretch to win Friday's Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes by three-quarter of a length on chilly and wet opening day program of the spring meet at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Winning for the third time in as many starts while making his 2022 debut, the Graham Motion-trained colt by Slumber covered 1 1/16 miles on a good turf course in 1:45.38 and paid $13.40 for the win.

Grand Sonata, with Tyler Gaffalione aboard, was up late to finish second, just ahead of third-place finisher Coinage, who led into the stretch. He was followed by Napoleonic War, Verbal and Credibility in the field of six 3-year-olds.

Bred by his owner, Sy Dog was produced from the Scat Daddy mare My Love Venezuela.

Sy Dog won his debut on firm turf at Belmont Park by four lengths last October, then captured the Central Park Stakes second time out on Nov. 27. He trained at Payson Park in Indiantown, Fla., over the winter for his 3-year-old debut.

Keeneland: ‘Operator Error’ Led To Wrong Order Of Finish, Payoffs On Opening Day Race

A nearly 20-minute delay ahead of Friday's sixth race at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., was caused by an incorrectly-posted order of finish in the fifth race of the opening day card. Keeneland would admit that it was a United Tote “operator error.”

The winner of the turf allowance race was Healing (3), and was correctly posted on the tote board and television monitors. However, the second and third-place finishers were switched on the board and in the original pari-mutuel payoffs: Red Hornet (9) was posted as the third-place finisher, when he actually finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Rochambeau (8).

The race was declared official prior to the mistake being uncovered.

Keeneland officials released the following statement after the incident:

“In today's fifth race at Keeneland, the order of finish was inadvertently posted as 3-8-9-10. The correct order of finish for the race is 3-9-8-10. Any tickets that were cashed on track before the corrected order of finish have been honored. The race was repriced and the correct running order prices are official. Officials are continuing to look into the cause of the error.”

A subsequent statement from track officials said:

“Officials have determined the error in today's fifth race was due to United Tote operator error. While safeguards to prevent this from happening are in place, additional measures are being taken to create further checks and balances.

“As previously announced, any tickets that were cashed on track before the corrected order of finish have been honored.

“Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) accounts, including NYRA Bets, TVG, TwinSpires and Xpressbet, will be adjusted to reflect the correct pricing.”

The statement did not outline the “safeguards” that failed to work, what additional measures would be taken or whether the United Tote operator was sanctioned for his costly mistake.
