Spendarella Dominates Filly Rivals In Appalachian For Third Consecutive Win

Giving jockey Tyler Gaffalione his third victory on the afternoon, Gainesway Stable's homebred Karakontie filly Spendarella came from just off the pace to score an easy and popular win by 1 3/4 lengths in Saturday's Grade 2 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Winning for the third time without a defeat, Spendarella covered one mile on good turf in 1:37.41 and paid $3.40 as the 3-5 favorite in the field of eight 3-year-old fillies. Dolce Zel, the second choice in the wagering, finished second, with Skims third and Kneesnhips fourth.

Trained by Graham Motion, Spendarella was produced from the Unusual Heat mare Spanish Bunny. She debuted in February, winning a Gulfstream Park maiden race at 1 1/16 miles, then jumped into stakes competition next out, going wire to wire to win the G3 Herecomesthebride at the South Florida track on March 5.

In the Appalachian, Gaffalione put Spendarella just behind the pacesetter, Glenall, who set fractions of :24.50, :49.11 and 1:14.12 for the first six furlongs. Spendarella took command into the stretch and was never challenged thereafter.

“She was going into the first turn very comfortably,” said Gaffalione. “She was in a great rhythm, and that other horse (Glenall-IRE) coming up inside didn't bother her at all. She relaxed beautifully and had some turn of foot.”

“She's made me look good,” Motion said of Spendarella. “She just does everything so easily. She's such a professional, she's a fighter – she obviously loves it. She makes me look smart.”

What's next for the filly? “I've heard mention of Ascot possibly, so we'll see,” said Motion. “I need to talk to Wesley” (a wink and nod to Keeneland-based trainer Wesley Ward, who is notable for success at England's Royal Ascot).

Noble Yeats Gives Waley-Cohen Grand National Send Off

Sam Waley-Cohen, who was riding in his final race before retirement, booted home 50-1 shot Noble Yeats (Ire) (Yeats {Ire}) to a 2 1/4-length victory in the G3 Randox Grant National. The amateur rider had announced his pending retirement on Thursday. Any Second Now (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) was second after running third in 2021, 20 lengths ahead of Cheltenham winner Delta Work (Fr) (Network {Ger}).

“He ran for me, he couldn't go the early pace and I just tried to find pockets to give him a bit of space to run into,” said Waley-Cohen, who was riding in his father Robert's silks for trainer Emmet Mullins. “I found myself on the inner and was going more forward than I wanted to.

“He loves seeing his fences, so I kept trying to find a spot where he could see them. When I asked him he came, but if I just half-asked him he wasn't confident, so I was trying to sit against him–he likes the bit in his mouth and your legs against him.

“I was just trying to get him in that nice rhythm and as soon as I asked him, he went. I thought I'd gone too early [at the last]. I really didn't want to get there then, but as soon as he picked up I thought 'he's gone, he's got this'.

“Dad has always supported me unwaveringly, we've never had a cross word, it's always been for fun. It's been a love affair. To my wife, long-suffering, they aren't all good days, there are bad days in this sport.

“We came here thinking the sun's out, it's your last ride–go and have a nice spin, no expectations. Just enjoy it. It's a dream. I couldn't believe it.”

He added, “I have to thank so many people. People said he was too young at seven, but when you're on a horse that age you can take chances and it paid off. He jumped neatly and I started to think he was really travelling, I started following Santini and then he just started to go forwards.

“He jumped the last well, but then I felt the other horse come to me and I thought he was going to get me. But when I really asked him he kept finding and galloped all the way to the line.

“I was overwhelmed when I crossed the line, but then you have a responsibility to the horse so I had to keep him walking and get some water on him and make sure he was fine. As a jockey your race isn't run until your horse is safe so that was my main thought–then get weighed in and go and enjoy it!

Robert Waley-Cohen said, “He's the only the amateur to have won the Gold Cup, the King George twice and the Grand National. It's so extraordinary.”

Waley-Cohen was given a nine-day ban and a £400 fine by the stewards for overuse of the whip and in the incorrect place in the finish.

Prevalence Captures the Commonwealth

'TDN Rising Star' Prevalence made the grade Saturday with a good-looking score in the Commonwealth at Keeneland. Away well from post 10, the bettors' second choice raced in a joint second as favored fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Nashville zipped through an opening quarter in :22.12. The bay turned up the heat on the chalk a bit through a :44.61 half-mile and they turned for home on even terms. Nashville threw in the towel at the top of the stretch, fading fast to the back of the field, but Prevalence had a head full of steam, rolling clear to score. Long Range Toddy completed the exacta with O Besos in third.

“I wasn't sure we'd get that close to [Nashville],” trainer Brendan Walsh said. “[The plan was] let [Prevalence] work his way into the race. They were going quick, but he looked comfortable the whole time. Tyler [Gaffalione] said he was just cruising along for him.”

“He's just a very smart horse,” Gaffalione said. “He does everything so easily. The first thing Brendan said was, 'Man, they went quick, but it looked like he was doing it well within himself,' and he really was.He has a high cruising speed, and he's a very intelligent horse. I had plenty left.”

Opening his account with a pair of flashy wins at Gulfstream last winter, Prevalence was off the board when stepped up in class for both the GII Wood Memorial S. and GII Pat Day Mile, after which he was shelved for the season. Returning Feb. 5 in a Gulfstream optional claimer, he finished fifth after a bad start and rebounded with a decisive score next out at that oval Mar. 5.

Pedigree Notes:
Prevalence is the 87th graded winner and the 163rd black-type scorer for Darley's Medaglia d'Oro. He is also the 17th graded victor and 28th black-type achiever out of a daughter of Ghostzapper. The Godolphin homebred is a half-sibling to Group 3 winner Estihdaaf and stakes winner Libreta (Girolamo). His 3-year-old half-brother Emirates Road (Quality Road) rallied to victory for Walsh and Godolphin in a seven-panel maiden special weight at Keeneland earlier on Saturday's card (video). Their dam Enrichment is a daughter of blue hen and Grade II winner Sahara Gold, making her a full-sister to MGISW Better Lucky and SW Final Frontier and a half to GSW Sahara Heat (A.P. Indy). Sahara Gold is a daughter of GI Breeders' Cup Sprint victress Desert Stormer (Storm Cat). Enrichment's recent produce includes a juvenile colt by Frosted and a yearling colt by Uncle Mo. She was bred back to Medaglia d'Oro.

Prevalence Makes The Grade In Commonwealth In Treble For Walsh

Prevalence pressed early pacesetter and favorite Nashville from second then surged to the lead in early stretch and won the $300,000 Commonwealth Stakes (G3) Saturday at Keeneland.

The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d'Or, a Godolphin homebred, cruised clear by 2 1/4 lengths and finished seven furlongs under Tyler Gaffalione in 1:22.47. He earned his career stakes triumph while providing trainer Brendan Walsh his third win on the day's card.

Long Range Todd was up for second, a head in front of third-place finisher O Besos.

With Prevalance in close attendance, Nashville set swift opening fractions of :22.12 and :44.61 through a half mile had nothing for the stretch run and finished last in the 10-horse field.

“I wasn't sure we'd get that close to (Nashville),” Walsh said. “(The plan was) let (Prevalence) work his way into the race. They were going quick, but he looked comfortable the whole time. Tyler said he was just cruising along for him.”

Prevalence came into the Commonwealth after a 4 ¾-length triumph in an optional allowance race March 5 at Gulfstream Park. After winning his first two starts last year, he was briefly on the classics trail but finished unplaced in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct in his first try in stakes company.

With Saturday's win Prevalence, who returned $7, improves to four wins from seven lifetime starts. He is out of the Ghostzapper mare Enrichment.

“He's just a very smart horse,” Gaffalione said. “He does everything so easily. The first thing Brendan (Walsh) said (after the race) was, 'Man, they went quick, but it looked like he was doing it well within himself,' and he really was. He has a high cruising speed, and he's a very intelligent horse. I had plenty left.”

Walsh also won the day's second race with Emirates Road, a full brother to Prevalence, and the third race with Longpants Required.
