Respective KY Derby, Oaks Hopefuls Epicenter, Echo Zulu Drill At Churchill

With less than four weeks remaining until the $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1) and $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI), Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen's duo of top contenders Epicenter and Echo Zulu returned to the work tab at Churchill Downs for the first time since their respective victories two weeks ago in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) and Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (G2).

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Epicenter, the likely favorite in the Kentucky Derby, worked five furlongs in 1:01 Sunday at 5:50 a.m. (ET) while his stablemate, L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds' champion filly Echo Zulu breezed 20 minutes prior to Epicenter and completed five furlongs in 1:00.80.

Epicenter, with exercise rider Wilson Fabian up, worked outside of fellow 3-year-old Guntown through opening eighth-mile fractions of :13.40, :25.40, and :37. The duo stayed together for most of the breeze and completed six furlongs in a comfortable 1:14.60 and were up seven furlongs in 1:29.40.

“He's a wonderful individual,” Asmussen said following Epicenter's 2 ½-length win in the Louisiana Derby. “He's another product of Winchell and Dr. (Dave) Lambert's selection process. He had his early schooling at mom and dad's (Asmussen Horse Center) in Laredo, Texas. He came in highly recommended and has always been impressive physically. He's done well in his development and continues to improve as the races get longer.”

Bettors tabbed Epicenter as the 9-2 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Saturday prior to the runnings of the Blue Grass (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Wood Memorial (G2). He will enter the Kentucky Derby with four wins from six starts and boasts purse earnings of $1,010,639.

Echo Zulu, with Fabian in the saddle, worked inside of debut maiden special weight winner Belle Rebelle through opening fractions of :13, :24.40, and :36. The duo galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.40.

Unbeaten Echo Zulu was the champion 2-year-old filly of 2021 following her emphatic 5 ¼-length score in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Her 3-year-old debut was in the Fair Grounds Oaks where she dug in during the late stages of the 1 1/16-mile race to hold off Hidden Connection by a scant nose.

“She got a little tired in the stretch but she got the job done,” jockey Joel Rosario said. “She showed how much of an amazing horse she is. She dug in and didn't want to get beat.”

“She was such a brilliant filly last year,” Asmussen said. “She really has a straight-forward attitude. She got a break and to compete in the Fair Grounds Oaks as a prep, and to do what she did, when in the past multiple great fillies have won this race, she can now add her name to that list. We're very proud of that.”

Echo Zulu is a perfect 5-for-5 and is one of several fillies that could vie for favoritism in the Kentucky Oaks.

Next weekend, several Kentucky Derby and Oaks contenders that are stabled on the grounds are tentatively scheduled to record timed workouts, including Cyberknife, Secret Oath, and Zozos.

Training hours at Churchill Downs remain 5:30-10 a.m. with half-hour renovation breaks from 7-7:30 a.m. and 8:30-9 a.m. There is a 10-minute period for workers only from 7:30-7:40 a.m.

The 15-minute training window reserved for only Kentucky Derby and Oaks contenders will begin Saturday, April 23.

Dariyan’s Mister Saint Paul Defies the Odds in the Prix La Force

Etienne and Gregoire Leenders trainee Mister Saint Paul (Fr) (Dariyan {Fr}) took five attempts to shed maiden status as a juvenile, doing so in Deauville's Oct. 20 Listed Prix Isonomy, and came back this term to finish just off the podium in Saint-Cloud's Mar. 19 Listed Prix Omnium II, his most recent outing. Virtually unconsidered as the 217-10 outsider-of-six for Sunday's G3 Prix La Force at ParisLongchamp, he turned the form book upside down and exhibited a tenacious attitude to record a career high in the nine-furlong test. The eventual winner was swiftly into stride for early control and stacked up the field in behind, but was headed by Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) as that rival tanked to the front at the halfway mark. Easing back to the fore soon after turning for home, he came under increased pressure inside the two pole and was driven out to deny his Omnium conqueror Dreamflight (GB) (Frankel {GB}) by a fast-diminishing short head for a career high in game fashion.

“Nobody believed in this horse at odds of 22-1, but we had faith in him because he's a real fighter and puts his heart into everything on the track,” commented trainer Gregoire Leenders. “His jockey [Theo Bachelot] gave him a beautiful ride and we are delighted for the owners. I'd also like to thank the staff at home for all their hard work in making these days possible. I think, and I've always thought, he is better over a mile. He's entered in the [May 15 G1] Poule d'Essai des Poulains and [June 5 G1] Prix du Jockey and the result of today's race tells us that both remain possibilities. We will take time to enjoy this before deciding on the route forward.”

Mister Saint Paul, who becomes the first group winner for his second-crop sire (by Shamardal), is the fourth of five foals and leading performer out of Elusive Kay (Fr) (Elusive City), herself a multiple-winning half to Listed Prix Melisande third Moskova (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a granddaughter of Luna Celtica (Ire) (Celtic Swing {GB}). The latter has three stakes performers to her credit, headed by G3 Prix Andre Baboin victor Celtic Rock (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), and she is kin to six stakes performers including G3 Prix de Psyche victrix Luna Kya (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}) and dual stakes scorer King Luna (Fr) (King's Best). King Luna is the dam of G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner Kiram (Fr) (Elusive City). The February-foaled bay is kin to a yearling colt by Birchwood (Ire) and hails from the family of the G1SW siblings Linamix (Fr) (Mendez {Fr}) and Luna Wells (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

Siyouni’s Mqse de Sevigne Equals Vanteaux Record For Fabre

Baron Edouard de Rothschild's homebred 3-year-old filly Mqse de Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who bettered a Sept. 2 debut third over one mile at ParisLongchamp with a Sept. 29 seven-furlong breakthrough win at Chantilly, returned to scene of her unveiling to secure a career high in Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux. Breaking well and settling third after the early skirmishes, the 39-5 chance made stealthy progress in the straight and ran on strongly once coming under pressure for her challenge approaching the eighth pole to comfortably assert superiority by 1 1/2 lengths and a short neck from Know Thyself (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Hot Queen (Fr) (Recorder {GB}). The win provided trainer Andre Fabre with a record-equalling seventh victory in the nine-furlong contest.

“She was a shade unlucky when encountering two good fillies first time out and won nicely on her second start last year,” said winning owner and France Galop president Baron Edouard de Rothschild. “She has developed into a handsome-looking filly over the winter and I think she won very well today. Her dam belonged to my father [Baron Guy de Rothschild] and has already produced Meandre, so I don't think staying further will be a problem for her. She's entered in the [June 19 G1] Prix de Diane [at Chantilly], of course, but we'll not commit to anything just yet. We shall take time to see how she comes out of this race and will, in time, decide which route to take.”

Mqse de Sevigne, who becomes the 30th pattern-race winner for her sire, is the ninth of 10 foals and one of six scorers out of Listed Prix de Thiberville and Listed Prix Occitanie runner-up Penne (Fr) (Sevres Rose {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Prix de la Californie and Listed Prix Omnium II victor Gris Tendre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}). The February-foaled homebred bay, who hails from the direct damline of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Apollonia (Fr) (Djebel {Fr}), is a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Meandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}), Listed River Eden Fillies' S. runner-up Dogma (Fr) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Une Fausse Venus (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).

Play Internet Poker Online: Game History

The game of internet poker may appear to be taking over the Internet and, frankly, it just may be! Try running the term “internet poker” through a search engine and you find over 16-million entries. It is not surprising, internet poker is fun, challenging and can, of course be profitable. However, don’t be misled, internet poker, just like any other ‘game of chance’ can be devastating to the finances of someone who doesn’t know how to play or doesn’t know when to stop.

The best advice is also the most obvious: 1) Learn how to play internet poker; 2) Find an Internet site that is reliable and comfortable for you (everyone’s taste is different) — a site that offers many different versions of internet poker is best; 3) Try several different poker games; 4) Enjoy the game but don’t gamble more than you can afford to loose and, most importantly, 5) Don’t get addicted to internet poker or to any other game of chance.

We have mentioned “versions” of internet poker. There are many versions of poker available online but the most popular are: Texas Holdem, Omaha Poker, draw poker and stud poker. Texas Holdem is currently the most popular online poker game and is the most popular in many casinos; Omaha Poker, also known as Omaha Holdem is similar to Texas Holdem but is a slower paced game and is generally more popular among the high-stakes players. Of course, the games our daddies and granddaddies used to play, seven-card stud, draw poker and five-card stud are always popular games and are available in almost any online casino. There are many others and many variants of these games but in general, the ones we have named are the most popular at internet poker casinos.

Play for Free! One great thing about internet poker is that many online casinos give you the opportunity to play some or many hands for free. This allows you to get the hang of the game, choose a game that you will be most comfortable with and develop a strategy for playing when you decide to “go live” and place some real bets.

Some of the advantages of playing internet poker, over going to a casino or even sitting down with some acquaintances in a living room or ‘back room’ are: 1) You are generally more comfortable, more relaxed at home; 2) You don’t have the constant conversation that is common at a ‘live’ game which allows you to focus better on your hand and your strategy; 3) You can take a break whenever YOU choose; 4) You can switch games when you choose or when you feel its to your advantage; and 5) Playing Internet Poker allows you to play for the stakes you choose with no outside, social pressure. Add up these advantages and you can easily see why playing poker online is as popular as it is, in one word it offers you a ‘choice.’

Every internet casino wants your business and will provide many incentives and many options to gain that business — that, of course is a good thing but perhaps the greatest thing about playing internet poker is, to get from one casino to another you do not need a taxicab — just ride your mouse or track-ball.
