Undefeated Flightline ‘Moving Forward’ Toward Met Mile

Undefeated Grade 1 Runhappy Malibu Stakes winner Flightline, who missed a scheduled start in the G2 San Carlos Stakes March 5 due to a strained right hock, will have his second workout on the comeback trail Sunday in preparation for the G1 Metropolitan Mile at Belmont Park on June 11.

The $1.2 million Metropolitan Handicap, or Met Mile, is a one-turn event first run in 1891 at Morris Park Race Track and moved to Belmont Park in 1904.

This will mark the 129th running of one of America's most historic and prestigious races.

Flightline, a $1 million son of Tapit, worked three furlongs last Sunday at Santa Anita Park in 37 seconds flat.

“He'll breeze a half-mile this Sunday,” said trainer John Sadler, who will have assistant trainer Juan Leyva aboard.

“The horse is doing well, but it' s a process to get him back to where he was. Step one was last Sunday, step two is this Sunday, so we're moving forward.”

Simplification ‘Excellent’ In First Work Since Florida Derby

Tami Bobo's Simplification breezed an 'easy' five-furlongs Friday morning at Gulfstream Park in preparation for a scheduled start in the May 7 Kentucky Derby (G1).

The son of Not This Time was clocked in 1:01.83 for his first workout since finishing third in the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream April 2.

“He galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.3, the seven furlongs in 1:27 and the mile in 1:40,” trainer Antonio said. “Excellent.”

Junior Alvarado was aboard for the breeze, subbing for jockey Jose Ortiz.

“I'm so happy with my horse,” Sano said. “He went very easy and came back well.”

Simplification ranks ninth on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 74 qualifying points, guaranteeing the Florida-bred colt a place in the 20-horse field. Prior to his third-place finish in the Florida Derby, in which he pressed the early pace while racing between horses, Simplification won the mile Mucho Macho Man in front-running fashion and captured the 1 1/16-mile Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G1) while closing from mid-pack to win going away.

Simplification is scheduled to work the next two Fridays at Gulfstream before shipping to Churchill Downs April 29.

C2 Racing Stable LLC and La Milagrosa Stable LLC's White Abarrio, the Florida Derby winner who ranks third with 112 qualifying points on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard, is scheduled to breeze three furlongs at Gulfstream Sunday morning. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has scheduled three breezes at Gulfstream before shipping the son of Race Day to Churchill Downs.

Authentic’s Foal Derby: Blue-Blooded Colts Square Off In Week 8 Matchup

The first foals by Spendthrift Farm's Horse of the Year Authentic have begun to arrive, and to celebrate, Spendthrift is hosting a “Foal Derby” to share photos of the stallion's debut crop and reward breeders and fans with prizes.

Each week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, a group of Authentic's foals will be displayed on Spendthrift Farm's social media channels. The two foals with the most likes and shares will face off in the finals each Friday to decide the favorite. Both finalists will then be among 20 horses eligible to win the grand prizes, based on the results of this year's Kentucky Derby. Voters will also be eligible for weekly prizes.

To learn more about the rules and prizes for both breeders and voters, click here.

Authentic, a 5-year-old son of Into Mischief, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $70,000. He was named Horse of the Year in 2020, following a campaign that saw him earn Grade 1 victories in the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Classic, and Haskell Stakes.

A pair of colts with pages full of Grade 1 black type go head-to-head in this week's matchup of finalists, one of which comes from a breeding program quite familiar to the sire.

Let's take a look at this week's finalists…

Foal: Colt o/o Inspired

Bred by: Peter Blum

The eighth foal out of the stakes-winning Unbridled's Song mare Inspired, and a half-brother to stakes-placed Night Time Lady. Grade 1 winners Well Chosen and Leofric are in the colt's extended family, as well as Grade 3 winner Major General, who is a contender on this year's Triple Crown trail.

It's a notable mating for Blum's program, which also produced Authentic himself in 2017.

Foal: colt o/o Classic Strike

Bred by: Three Chimneys Farm and Clearsky Farm

The 11th foal out of the winning Smart Strike mare Classic Strike, a top producer whose foals include Grade 1 winner Union Strike, Grade 2 winner Handsome Mike, stakes winner Pretty Lady, and stakes-placed Classic Sense.

“He's a really nice foal,” said Clearsky Farm's Barry Robinette. “The mare's done a great job of having some foals in the past. This one's a nice physical.

“It fit her well pedigree-wise,” Robinette said about the cross with Authentic. “He's a nice-looking stallion. We've had three Authentics this year, and they've all been nice horses, so he's getting the product on the ground. The combination made it a no-brainer.”

Grassroots Has Yet Another Bullet Worker Friday

David McKathan's Grassroots Training & Sales had their fourth bullet worker so far when a Jimmy Creed filly (Hip 939) was one of five juveniles to breeze in :9 4/5 Friday during the sixth session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale under-tack show.

Hip 939 is one of three :9 4/5 workers for Grassroots this week with the others being a Tapiture filly (Hip 87) (video) and a Macho Uno colt (Hip 674) (video). McKathan also had a :9 3/5 breezer in Hip 346, a daughter of Street Boss.

“It's been good for us,” McKathan said of the Spring Sale under-tack show. “We have some nice horses. They were training good on the farm and we can usually relate how they are training out there to what we are going to get here. But, it is always a pleasant surprise when you break :10 flat. It is harder to do than people know.”

McKathan purchased Hip 939 for $38,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Bred in Ontario by Stan Dodson, the chestnut is a daughter of SW Quite a Ruckus (Richter Scale).

“She is a really nice filly,” McKathan said of his latest bullet worker. “She has been training well. We knew she was a special filly. She is a pretty filly too. I have had some luck with Jimmy Creeds.”

The other juveniles to breeze in :9 4/5 Friday were a Candy Ride (Arg) filly (Hip 901) consigned by King's Equine (video); a son of Honor Code (Hip 1006) from the McKathan Bros. shedrow (video); a Bolt d'Oro filly (Hip 1017) sent out by de Meric Sales (video); and a filly by Midshipman (Hip 1048) from the Top Line Sales barn (video).

A colt from the first crop of GI Haskell Invitatonal S. winner Girvin (Hip 1004) breezed the fastest quarter of Friday's session in :20 3/5. He was consigned by Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine, which also had a bullet worker Wednesday in Hip 548, a Lord Nelson colt who went in :20 3/5.

An $8,000 OBS October purchase, Hip 1004 was withdrawn from the OBS March Sale in favor of this auction. He is a half-brother to MSW Tiger Blood (Cowtown Cat) and SP Smarten Up (American Freedom). A filly by Ocala Stud's Girvin (Hip 198) summoned $240,000 during the OBS March Sale after breezing in :20 4/5.

The seventh and final session of the OBS Spring Sale under-tack show starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.
