Champ Jackie’s Warrior Aces Season Bow In Count Fleet Sprint

Hall of Famer and 11-time Oaklawn leading trainer Steve Asmussen earned his fourth victory in the $500,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) as reigning champion male sprinter Jackie's Warrior took this year's edition Saturday at the Hot Springs, Ark. track.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Jackie's Warrior took the lead from the start, setting fractions of :21.61 and :44.51 for the first half mile, while under slight pressure from Empire of Gold.

The champion opened up a comfortable lead entering the stretch and had plenty left to hold off the fast closing Letsgetlucky by three-quarters of length in a final time of 1:09.09 for six furlongs over a sloppy (sealed) track.

“A very fast horse like Jackie…he just came out of there and got away from everybody,” Rosario said. “He enjoyed what he was doing out there and was able to keep going. He has run on the slop before and won. He can run on anything. He's a very nice horse.”

Chipofftheoldblock was third, another length back, while Bob's Edge, winner of two stakes this meet, was fourth.

“We got beat by a really good horse,” said Martin Garcia, rider of Letsgetlucky. “My horse showed today that he is a good horse. He's been showing up every time, but today was tough competition. He broke well, but he doesn't have the speed of the others, so I just let him sit and make one run and that's exactly what happened. He was running at the end. I just couldn't catch the other one (Jackie's Warrior).”

Jackie's Warrior, the 1-2 favorite who returned $3, was making his first start since the Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) last fall at Del Mar.

A 4-year-old Maclean's Music colt out of Unicorn Girl, by A. P. Five Hundred, Jackie's Warrior improved his record to 9-1-1 from 13 starts and has earned $1,853,964 for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison.

Regal Glory Leads Jenny Wiley 1-2 Finish For Trainer Brown

Peter Brant's Regal Glory surged by longtime leader Navratilova at the three-sixteenths pole and then held off stablemate Shantisara by one length to win the $500,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1) Saturday at Keeneland.

On a day that featured three stakes, Keeneland realized record Pick 4 and Pick 5 wagering. The Pick 4 handled a record $1,357,298, eclipsing the previous mark of $1,065,002 set on Toyota Blue Grass Day in 2018. The Pick 5 handled a record $1,539,098 to surpass the $1,485,090 established on Toyota Blue Grass Day in 2021.

In addition, all-sources wagering for today's 11-race card totaled $27,304,001 to be the second-highest single-day handle in Keeneland history. The record single-day handle of $28,137,728 was set during last Saturday's Toyota Blue Grass Day.

Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz, Regal Glory completed the 1 1/16 miles of the Jenny Wiley on a turf course labeled as good in 1:40.97. The victory is the fifth in the race for Brown, who previously won with Ball Dancing in 2015, Sistercharlie in 2018, and Rushing Fall in 2019 and 2020.

Navratilova was first out of the gate with Regal Glory and Shantisara chasing right behind her while Lady Speightspeare trailed the field after lunging at the start and spotting the field several lengths.

The top three remained unchanged through fractions of :24.41, :48.14 and 1:11.85. Navratilova maintained the lead to the top of the stretch but Regal Glory quickly got her measure and opened up with more than enough left to hold off Shantisara.

Lady Speightspeare rallying to finish another 6¾ lengths back in third.

A 2021 Keeneland January sales graduate at $925,000, Regal Glory is a 6-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Animal Kingdom out of the More Than Ready mare Mary's Follies.

The Jenny Wiley marked the second Grade 1 victory and 10th stakes victory overall for Regal Glory, who improved her record to 18-11-4-0 and increased her earnings to $1,836,009 with Saturday's $306,125 check.

Regal Glory returned $4.

Scarabea finished another neck back in fourth and was followed in order by Navratilova and Waliyak.

Champion Jackie’s Warrior Returns a Winner in the Count Fleet

Champion Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) returned as good ever, taking the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. in gate-to-wire fashion Saturday at Oaklawn. Receiving first-time Lasix for this seasonal bow, the 1-2 chalk took up his preferred position at the head of affairs, zipping out to a clear lead. He was quickly joined by 28-1 shot Empire of Gold (Goldencents), who pressed the Eclipse winner through a sharp first quarter in :21.61. Jackie's Warrior tugged a bit clear of the longshot through a :44.51 half-mile and turned for home in front. The bay was still on cruise control in early stretch, but the field closed in entering the final sixteenth and Joel Rosario shook the reins at Jackie's Warrior. He showed his typical guts and grit, forging clear for a one-length success over a late-flying Letsgetlucky (Munnings).

“Joel [Rosario] let's him do what he wants to do, but he's responded to Joel,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “I think that he needed the race and that is apparent. But what a great starting point for a champion.”

Asmussen indicated Jackie's Warrior will make his next start in the GI Churchill Downs S. May 7.

Capturing the GII Pat Day Mile at Churchill May 1 after a failed attempt at two turns in the GIII Southwest S., Jackie's Warrior did all the dirty work in the GI Woody Stephens S. in June, but was overtaken late by Drain the Clock (Maclean's Music), finishing a neck second. A dominant winner of the GII Amsterdam S. next out at Saratoga Aug. 1, the $95,000 KEESEP buy battled next-out GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Life is Good (Into Mischief) stride-for-stride down the Saratoga stretch in the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Aug. 28, gamely fending off that foe by a neck in what was arguably the most exciting race of the year. The easiest of winners in the GII Gallant Bob S. at Parx Sept. 25, Jackie's Warrior was favored to take the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar Nov. 6 and led through the first half-mile, but eventually faded to sixth.

Pedigree Notes:

Much has been written of Hill 'n' Dale's stallion Maclean's Music, from his sole brilliant race start that earned a 114 Beyer Speed Figure to his equally quick start at stud with a first-crop Classic winner in GI Preakness S. hero Cloud Computing. But unlike his “one and done” race career, Maclean's Music has continued to churn out the stakes winners, with 25 black-type winners–six graded–to date. In addition to Cloud Computing, Maclean's Music's sons Drain the Clock, Complexity, and Jackie's Warrior are all Grade I winners, with the Count Fleet winner the most productive of the bunch as a three-time GISW and last year's champion male sprinter.

Much has also been written about Jackie's Warrior's dam, Unicorn Girl, from the detailing of her career with Carlo Vaccarezza to what led to her sale at Keeneland November in 2020 for $850,000 to Arthur Hoyeau. The mare has a 2-year-old colt by American Pharoah, who brought $600,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale from M.V. Magnier, and a Mar. 18 filly by Into Mischief. Unicorn Girl traces directly to the 1869 blue hen Devotion (GB) (Stockwell {GB}), whose descendants included U.S. Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox and English Triple Crown winner Rock Sand (GB), as well as Classic winners in France and Germany.

Unicorn Girl's sire, the MGSP A. P. Five Hundred, has spent most of his stud career in Chile, but produced a single U.S. crop in 2005, of which Unicorn Girl was a member. Jackie's Warrior is the sole U.S.-bred stakes winner out of his daughters.
