Full Field Of 16 To Line Up In UAE Derby; 12 Eligible For Kentucky Derby Points

A full field of 16 3-year-olds were signed on to compete for a possible 170 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in the $1 million UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan Racecourse.

The 1 3/16-mile UAE Derby will be run on the undercard of the $12 million Dubai World Cup (GI). The action from Dubai begins early Saturday at 7:45 a.m. (all times Eastern) and horses in the UAE Derby will head to post in Race 5 at 10:10 a.m.

There are 12 horses currently eligible to garner points in the UAE Derby field. Three of the ineligible horses were bred in the Southern Hemisphere – therefore, they are considered 4-year-olds – and the other, likely favorite Pinehurst, is campaigned by Bob Baffert who is suspended by Churchill Downs Incorporated from competing in this year's Kentucky Derby.

Aside from Pinehurst, there are two other U.S.-based horses in the race – WC Racing, Aldabaugh, Wonderland and Goldstein's Get Back Goldie and Grandview Stable and Don Alberto Stable's Gilded Age.

Here is the complete field in order of program numbers (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Irwin (ARG) (Francisco Goncalves, Antonio Cintra);
  2. Kiefer (BRZ) (Hector Lazo, Ricardo Colombo);
  3. Quality Boone (ARG) (Vagner Leal, Cintra);
  4. Azure Coast (Antonio Fresu, Pavel Vashchenko);
  5. Bendoog (Tadhg O'Shea, Bhupat Seemar);
  6. Combustion (JPN); William Buick, Keizo Ito);
  7. Crown Pride (JPN) (Damian Lane, Koichi Shintani);
  8. Get Back Goodlie (Irad Ortiz Jr., Doug O'Neill);
  9. Gilded Age (Luis Saez, Bill Mott);
  10. Island Falcon (IRE) (Patrick Cosgrave, Saeed bin Suroor);
  11. Pinehurst (Flavien Prat, Baffert);
  12. Reiwa Homare (JPN) (Christophe Lemaire, Daisuke Takayanagi);
  13. Sekifu (Cristian Demuro, Koshiro Take);
  14. Summer Is Tomorrow (Mickael Barzalona, Seemar);
  15. Withering (Adrie de Vries, Fawzi Nass); and
  16. Arabian Gazelles (Richard Mullen, Seemar)

Only Crown Pride, Island Falcon, Pinehurst, Reiwa Homare and Sekifu were nominated to the Triple Crown. All other eligible 3-year-olds can pay a late $6,000 nominate fee that is due Monday.

The UAE Derby will be shown on “America's Day at the Races” on Fox Sports 2 and TVG. Fans are invited to bet on www.TwinSpires.com, the official wagering provider of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs Incorporated.

Quarter Horse Trainer Trey Ellis Suspended For Four Zilpaterol Positives

Stewards in Louisiana have suspended Quarter Horse trainer Kenneth “Trey” Ellis through March 2024 after he picked up four zilpaterol positives at Louisiana Downs in February.

The rulings come just weeks after stewards in Louisiana handed out multiple rounds of suspensions to top trainers Lanny Don Keith, Manuel H Macias, Manuel Pizana, and Rosendo Valdez Jr., all of whom had multiple zilpaterol positives in races at Louisiana Downs earlier this year. Those rulings were made in early March and published online earlier this week.

As with the other trainers, Ellis has waived his right to a split-sample test and a hearing before stewards. According to the rulings, his cases will also be referred to the Louisiana State Racing Commission for further action, as were those of his colleagues.

The positive tests came from The Cartel Queen, who was second in the fifth race (a maiden) at Louisiana Downs on Feb. 22; The Geauxt, who won the sixth race (an allowance) that day; Mr Desert Streak, who won the second race (a claimer) at Louisiana Downs on Feb. 8, and Rock Solid Love, who won the fourth race (an allowance) at Louisiana Downs on Feb. 16. All horses have been disqualified and declared unplaced, with purses redistributed.

Mr Desert Streak won the Races and Aces Stakes for Ellis in 2018.

Ellis is a multiple graded stakes winner, having picked up a Grade 1 victory in Hot Dam Bam a Lam in the Refrigerator Stakes. He was ranked eighth in the country by Quarter Horse wins in 2021, and fourth in 2020.

He was given six months' suspension for each of the four positives, which combined will see him suspended until March 31, 2024.

Zilpaterol is a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in cattle heading to slaughter in order to increase body fat and muscle. The substance has been found in some horse feed products which are created in mills that also make feed for livestock.

Alkumait Sponsorship Heads First 2yo Race of Irish Season

As part of the IRE Incentive Scheme, Curragh hosts the first juvenile race of the Irish racing season Saturday. The five-furlong test is sponsored by Castlefield Stud on behalf of G2 Mill Reef S. winner Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}–Suelita {GB}, by Dutch Art {GB}), who stands at the nursery for €5,000.

Highlighting the sponsorship, the connections of the first season sire are offering a €100,000 bonus to the connections of the first black-type winner from the stallion's first crop of 2-year-olds.

”We have long-term ambitions, and we are going to be there to support breeders in the ring and on the racetrack,” said Jack Tuohy, who was behind the deal. “This is evident at the Curragh on Saturday where we are sponsoring the opening 2-year-old maiden of the year we are putting the foundations in place to make Alkumait a long-term success.”
