Desert Wisdom Rides The Rail To Burj Nahaar Win

Godolphin homebred Desert Wisdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was plucked out of the Racing In Dubai Horses-In-Training Sale in September by Hassan Saleh Al Hammadi for AED70,000, having been gelded after being beaten double-digit margins in a pair of starts for trainer Charlie Appleby in Britain earlier in the season, and the 4-year-old continued his class ascent on Saturday with a win in the G3 Burj Nahaar, the local stepping stone to the G2 Godolphin Mile in three weeks' time.

The chestnut won his local debut at Jebel Ali on Dec. 24 and was runner-up in a pair of conditions races over this track and trip before fading to ninth behind Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G3 Jebel Ali Mile on Feb. 12. The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Algiers was among four scratches here.

Though he broke well on the rail Desert Wisdom was not rushed into the hot pace by Adrie de Vries, and they sat four lengths off the lead and buried on the fence as the field headed into the turn. They initially appeared to be swamped by rivals taking the overland route, but de Vries remained patient, not getting into his mount until they had passed the quarter pole. Desert Wisdom proved to have more in the tank than Mubakker (Speightstown), who was rallying on the outside, and hit the line 1 1/2 lengths the best.

Pedigree Notes

Desert Wisdom is the second stakes winner for the former Andre Fabre-trained Tulips (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who also produced last year's GI Natalma S. winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) for Charlie Appleby, and the G3 UAE Oaks second Swift Rose (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) for Saeed bin Suroor. Tulips herself won the Listed Prix Ceres and was twice Group 3 placed. She is a granddaughter of the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Cherokee Rose (Ire) (Dancing Brave). Tulips has a yearling colt by Frankel.

Victory For Uruguay on Super Saturday

Uruguayan trainer Antonio Cintra's first season with a satellite yard in Dubai continued in successful fashion with victory for Quality Boone (Arg) (Daniel Boone {Brz}) in the Listed Al Bastikaya, giving the colt his second win at Meydan this carnival.

Race favourite Bendoog (Gun Runner) got first jump and dominated the early stages in the lead on the rail under Tadhg O'Shea, with Get Back Goldie (Goldencents) pestering him for a short while but visibly weakening on the turn. With Bendoog's advantage appearing to increase off the bend, it wasn't long before the front-runner also started to look leg-weary in the straight.

The Fawzi Nass-trained Withering (GB) (Mondialiste {Ire}) was the first to take up the challenge and as he closed on the leader, Quality Boone swept past him down the centre of the track to win by a length and a quarter, with Withering snatching second, a nose in front of Bendoog. The international flavour of the race was highlighted by runners from four different countries filling the first four places: Withering represents Bahrain, while Bendoog is trained in Dubai, and the fourth-placed Final Dance (Tur) (Declaration Of War) in Turkey.

Quality Boone triumphed on his first start at Meydan over seven furlongs on Dec. 23 and has been a model of consistency since then, finishing runner-up next time at the same trip and then taking third in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas when stepping up to a mile last month. Carrying 10 pounds more than his northern hemisphere-bred rivals to allow for his slight age advantage, the winner will likely head next to the G2 UAE Derby on the Dubai World Cup card.

His jockey Vagner Leal said, “The horse is improving race by race and winning these races is very important for us. We know that each race is more difficult but I hope after this one he can improve and run well [in the UAE Derby].”

Leal took fifth in last week's G1 Saudi Cup aboard Aero Trem (Brz) (Shanghai Bobby), who is also trained by Cintra.

Pedigree notes

A half-brother to Argentinean Grade 1 winner Quiz Kid (Arg) (Forestry), Quality Boone is from the first crop of the Brazilian-based stallion Daniel Boone, a grandson of Wild Again who won the GI Grande Premio Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado. He is the ninth foal and fourth winner of his unraced dam Quindici (Crafty Prospector), a half-sister to the minor stakes winners Scolara (Elusive Quality) and Platinee (Gulch). The 19-year-old Quindici also has a 2-year-old full-brother to Quality Boone named Quibbler.

Hypothetical A Dirt Group 1 Winner For Lope De Vega

Hypothetical (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) showed improvement throughout last year's carnival to finish second in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 and fourth in the G1 Dubai World Cup, and the 5-year-old continued his ascent on Saturday with a win in the latest renewal of Round 3 to become the 13th Group 1 winner for his first, and Lope De Vega's first top-level winner on the dirt.

Breaking prominently from his wide gate, Hypothetical was driven forward by Mickael Barzalona and put his head in front as they passed the finish line for the first time. The 2019 GI Preakness S. runner-up and now locally trained Everfast (Take Charge Indy) refused to let Hypothetical get an early lead, however, and dueled with that rival on the rail through the first turn and into the backstretch. Hypothetical at last shook off Everfast midway down the backstretch to lead by a length, with Dubai Icon (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in striking distance on the outside and Remorse (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) poised on the rail. Everfast moved to re-rally and Remorse was driven up the rail as they straightened for home, but Hypothetical had more to give. He held off a persistent Remorse under a drive to win by a length, with Everfast edging out Kafoo (Curlin) for third 6 1/2 lengths back.

A 550,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Hypothetical broke his maiden in his lone start at two in December of 2019 for John Gosden but was soundly beaten in three starts at three, joining Salem bin Ghadayer for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed after finishing last, beaten 39 lengths, in a Doncaster handicap in September of 2020. He had a busy carnival last year, making six starts including a winning debut before his aforementioned Group 1 exploits. Hypothetical beat just two home in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 on Jan. 14, but rebounded to win the G3 Firebreak S. on Feb. 4.

Pedigree Notes

Hypothetical is the second foal out of G3 Prix Fille de l'Air second Peut Etre (Ire) (Whipper), who is a half-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. victress Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and two other stakes-placed horses. They are out of Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who was third in the G3 Prix Miesque. The third dam Zieting (Ire) (Zieten) was a listed winner in the U.S. and France and produced three middle-distance pattern race winners in Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), as well as the dam of G3 Tattersall S. winner La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). It is the further family of the G1 Commonwealth Cup scorer Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and his Group 2-winning and Classic-placed half-brother Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Peut Etre's most recently reported foal is a 3-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) named Pourquoi Pas (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
