Baffert Duo Takes On Santa Ysabel

Bob Baffert brings a strong hand into Sunday's local prep for the GI Kentucky Oaks in Santa Anita's GIII Santa Ysabel S. Leading the charge is Eda (Munnings), last out winner of the GI Starlet S. Dec.4 where she defeated fellow Santa Ysabel contender Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince) by a gamhalf-length. She'll be looking for her fourth stakes victory in a row after also decisively winning both the Desi Arnaz S. and the Anoakia S. last fall.

Not to be outdone by her stablemate, Under the Stars (Pioneerof the Nile) posted her own 3/4-length victory Jan. 8th in the GII Santa Ynez S. Though her recent efforts have all been sprinting, this half to Bodemeister has both the pedigree to cover the longer distance and the speed to overcome her far outside draw. Her speed figures have been on the rise since finishing a distant third to Eda in the Desi Arnaz S., including a career high 91 Beyer Speed Figure in her win in the Santa Ynez.

While she missed a planned start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies due to surgery to remove a bone chip in her left ankle, 'TDN Rising Star' Ain't Easy (Into Mischief) certainly showed more than enough class as a 2-year-old to earn a place in this field. Though she's been working consistently, she'll be tested coming off a five-month layoff with her last race being a 4 3/4-length victory in the GII Chandelier S. back Oct. 1 where she defeated stablemate Desert Dawn (Cupid), who was six-lengths back in third and also runs here.

Miler Eastern World Sprints His Way To Mahab Al Shimaal Glory

In his previous 14 starts, the 5-year-old Eastern World (Ire) (Dubawi (Ire)), best known as the little brother of dual Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet (Aus)), had never raced under seven furlongs and had done his best work over a mile.

In the Super Saturday finale, the Ahmad bin Harmish-trained gelding rewarded his astute trainer and promising jockey Ray Dawson when taking the six-furlong G3 Mahab Al Shimaal. Showing plenty of tactical speed, Eastern World and Dawson tracked the French-trained pacesetter Manjeer (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). When angled out for a clear run in the long Meydan straight, Dawson got the response he asked for as Eastern World edged clear from the brave Manjeer. Ejtilaab (Ire) (Slade Power (Ire)) stayed on well to pick up third prize. Eastern World, who started his racing career in Charlie Appleby's Godolphin stable and changed hands at the Racing In Dubai Sale last September, covered the new distance for him in 1:11.14.

Dawson, who has never lost a race when riding for bin Harmish, enthusiastically praised Eastern World afterwards and played a role in the decision to try him over a shorter trip.

“After his last race (when eighth behind Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in the 9.5 furlong G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 on February 4), Ahmad told me we should try him over shorter,” said Dawson, who was picking up his biggest win at Meydan. “I told him I've been thinking the same thing. We know he has lots of early speed and we know he'll stay. He's a super horse. Very genuine.”

Eastern World, whose previous two wins had come versus lesser company over a mile, may have rejuvenated his career as a sprinter. His next target is undecided and the international cast who will contest the G1 Golden Shaheen in three weeks may be beyond his grasp.

Pedigree notes

A Godolphin homebred, Eastern World, in addition to being Thunder Snow's half-brother, also has Group 3 winners Ihtimal (Ire) (Shamardal) and First Victory (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), and Listed winners Always Smile (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Winter Lightning (Ire) (Shamardal) among his talented siblings. Their dam is the French provincial winner Eastern Joy (GB) (Dubai Destination), a half-sister to the G1 Prix de Diane winner West Wind (GB) (Machiavellian). Eastern World's aforementioned half-sister First Victory is now the dam of leading Classic contender Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), winner of last season's G3 Autumn S.

Dark Angel’s Alfareeq Lands G1 Jebel Hatta

With only one black-type start to his name resulting in a Group 2 placing, Shadwell's 5-year-old gelding Alfareeq (Ire) became the latest Group 1 winner for his sire Dark Angel (Ire) in the Jebel Hatta, gifting his local trainer Musabeh Al Mheiri an important victory on Super Saturday at Meydan.

There was a late defection from the original 15-strong line-up when Godolphin's Barney Roy (Ire) was withdrawn but the field also included last year's winner, the hugely popular Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper), who came into the race on the back of a last-start win in the G2 Singspiel S.

The outsider Ursa Minor (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was swift from the gates to tussle for the early lead with Freescape (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) and Finest Sound (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who then took it up to play a dominant role almost throughout. Coasting along the straight in the hands of Dane O'Neill the grey Alfareeq grabbed the rail after cruising past the tiring Freescape and then strode on up Finest Sound's inner to win by a length.

Giving Simon and Ed Crisford and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid a second runner-up finish on the card following Without A Fight in the G2 Dubai City Of Gold, Finest Sound held on for second, with the 85-rated Ursa Minor posting the performance of his career to take third. With O'Neill in the saddle for Shadwell, Jim Crowley was able to take the ride on Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), who finished fourth on his second Meydan start this year. Lord Glitters, held up in his customary style towards the rear of the field, took some time to find room after straightening for home and, though running on strongly, had been given too hard a task to claw back the leaders. He finished sixth, just behind the Marco Botti-trained Felix (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

A Shadwell homebred who was previously trained in France by Freddy Head, Alfraeeq was last seen finishing second to Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G2 Zabeel Mile and had been fractious at the start that day. Prior to that he had won at Abu Dhabi in December following a nine-month break since his previous success at Meydan.

Currently enjoying an excellent season in the UAE and notching his second Group 1 victory after the G1 Commonwealth Cup success of Muhaarar (GB), winning jockey Dane O'Neill said, “He had to behave in the stalls but everything went smoothly from the start. We had a good position and he ran a big race. The pace suited us because we kind of stalked, I wouldn't say a sedate gallop but certainly a slower one than would have suited others, and we took advantage of that.”

He added, “When things drop right for this horse and you ride him cold early and fill him up then he shows a good turn of foot. That's the key to him, just get him cold, switch him off, and he has a really good turn of foot.”

Pedigree notes

Alfareeq is the first foal and sole winner to date of his dam Urjuwaan (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who beat subsequent Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay (GB) when breaking her maiden as a 2-year-old over a mile at Chantilly. A half-sister to the G3 Prix Noailles winner Raseed, the 10-year-old Urjuwaan was sold to Blandford Bloodstock for 65,000gns at the recent December Mares' Sale at Tattersalls when in foal to Ribchester (Ire). She had been barren to Night Of Thunder (Ire) the previous season. The mare's grand-dam Wissal (Woodman) was a half-sister to the champion miler Bahri (Riverman). The further family also includes last year's G1 Golden Shaheen runner-up Matera Sky (Speightstown).

Alfrareeq is the tenth Group 1 winner for Yeomanstown Stud's Dark Angel.
