Richard Mandella Talks Forbidden Kingdom, Beholder On Writers’ Room

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella looks to have a great chance of saddling his first GI Kentucky Derby starter since the mid-2000s with a major contender in GII San Felipe S. romper Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah), and Tuesday, Mandella sat down with the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland to talk about his electric speedster, the impending Hall of Fame induction of former trainee Beholder, his view on the state of California racing after its trials of the past few years and more.

“Truly excited,” Mandella, calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, said when asked his reaction to Forbidden Kingdom's 5 3/4-length score Saturday. “I was a little concerned when he opened up so fast early, but he's just gifted with such natural speed and he enjoys using it. He came back great and is doing very well. We had big expectations for him and he's never let us down. He's a gorgeous horse, a very smart horse and has a lot of class about him.”

The conversation turned to Flavien Prat, the perennial leading rider in California who has a close relationship with Mandella and announced over the weekend that he will be moving his tack to New York.

“Selfishly. I just hate to see him go,” Mandella said. “He came to me at 18 years old from France and immediately I just saw a star. There was no secret; anybody that would've looked at him close enough would have seen it. He just has everything, all the ingredients it takes to be a great rider. The horsemanship, the athleticism, the intelligence and then the class to go with it. The person he is, the rider he is, it'll be a big loss when he leaves. On a larger scale, California's going to be hurt by it. I think Flavien's attracted a lot of players and fans that watch purely because of him. And I hope that doesn't take too much away from California.”

Elsewhere on the show, which is also sponsored by Coolmore, West Point Thoroughbreds, XBTV, Canterbury Park, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders' Association and Legacy Bloodstock, the writers reacted to a huge weekend of racing and discussed the controversies surrounding rides by Paco Lopez and Jose Lezcano. Four Graces Back For More In Hurricane Bertie

Being a multiple graded-stakes winner, Whitham Thoroughbreds LLC's Four Graces is a prime broodmare prospect. While it is undeniably her ultimate destiny, the 5-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection apparently is in no hurry to become a mother.

Four Graces is scheduled to make her third start off a layoff in Saturday's $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream Park, where she has made a solid case to continue her racing career by finishing a close-up second in an Jan. 6 optional claiming allowance and a solid second in the Jan. 29 Inside Information (G2).

“[Retirement] was on the table, but it was the timing of things that we were able to give her a shot. It was still early enough that if something flared up or she had a setback, we could turn a different avenue and make her a broodmare,” trainer Ian Wilkes said. “Touch wood, she's very good right now. She's doing good. Hopefully, we can keep going for a while and next year she can become a broodmare.”

The Hurricane Bertie, a seven-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares, will be co-featured on Saturday's program with the $100,000 Captiva Island, a five-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares.

Four Graces won her career debut at Gulfstream March 1, 2020, before going on to win the Dogwood (G3) at Churchill Downs and the Beaumont (G3) at Keeneland, both at seven furlongs, later that year. The homebred sprinter went to the sidelines following a poor showing in the Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland in October 2020 and had been out of action, with the exception of a fourth-place finish in an overnight stakes at Churchill last June, until she came back strong Jan. 6.

“She had a couple of different things that required some time. That's why I've been playing a little bit of a catch-up game. She's needed the racing because I went 14 months with just one race,” Wilkes said. “Now, this will be her third race back in succession. She's in a nice rhythm.”

Four Graces rallied from seventh to finish second, beaten less than a length by Brad Cox-trained Just One Time, in the seven-furlong Inside Information.

“I'm very happy with her performances so far. They have been very workmanlike. In her first race she lost the bob in a photo. She came back to run a huge second to Brad's filly,” Wilkes said. “She's trained forward since then. I'm very happy with the way she's training.”

Although Four Graces won back-to-back graded-stakes from gate to wire in 2020, Wilkes doesn't expect her to set or press the pace in the Hurricane Bertie.

“She's the one who has dropped off the pace a bit more. It's nothing I've trained her to do. She always wanted to lay up close, but this campaign, she been sitting a bit off the speed, and that's her doing,” Wilkes said. “I think it's maturity. The older you get you realize you don't have to go 110 to accomplish things.”

Julien Leparoux has the return mount aboard Four Graces.

Juddmonte's Obligatory is scheduled to make her first start since capturing the Nov. 30 Chilukki (G3) at Churchill Downs. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the 4-year-old daughter of Curlin won the Eight Belles (G2) at Churchill and finished second in the Test (G1) at Saratoga earlier in the year.

Obligatory broke her maiden impressively at Gulfstream in her second career start to kick off her 2021 campaign.

Tyler Gaffalione is scheduled to ride Obligatory for the first time in the Hurricane Bertie.

Starship Stables and trainer Steve Dwoskin's Starship Nala, who nosed out Four Graces Jan. 6, will seek to improve on a fourth-place finish in the Inside Information, in which she made a middle move into contention before weakening to fourth.

Miguel Vasquez has the call aboard the Florida-bred daughter of Capo Bastone.

Sam Wilensky's My Destiny, also a 5-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection, enters the Hurricane Bertie off a loss by a nose in the Minaret at Tampa Bay Downs.

Romero Maragh is slated to ride My Destiny for the first time Saturday.

Ryzan Sun Racing LLC's Bramble Berry enters the Hurricane Bertie off a dominating optional claiming allowance score, in which he defeated Music City Star, who came back to win Wednesday's feature at Gulfstream. Edwin Gonzalez has the return call on the Herman Wilensky-trained mare.

Mellon Patch Inc.'s Feeling Mischief, who finished third in the Minaret last time out, round out the field. Trainer Michael Campbell named Corey Lanerie to ride the 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief.

Classic Causeway Expected To Go Favored In 12-Strong Tampa Bay Derby

Horses such as Classic Causeway, the authoritative winner of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 12 and a Grade 1 and Grade 2-placed runner as a 2-year-old, don't come along every day.

Neither does the chance to upset such a talent for the lion's share of a $400,000 purse – not to mention coveted “Road to the Kentucky Derby” points.

Those facts have combined to create a 12-horse field of 3-year-olds for Saturday's Grade 2, mile-and-a-sixteenth Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, the centerpiece of a Festival Day 42 card offering five stakes races, four graded, worth a combined $1-million in purse money.

The Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby is the 11th race on the card, with a scheduled post time of 5:23 p.m. The first of 12 races is at 12:15 p.m.

Classic Causeway, who is expected to be the wagering favorite, drew the No. 4 post position for the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby. Irad Ortiz, Jr., who was aboard for his Sam F. Davis Stakes victory, will again ride Classic Causeway for owners Kentucky West Racing, LLC and Clarke M. Cooper and trainer Brian Lynch.

The top four finishers will receive 50, 20, 10 and 5 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby on May 7 at Churchill Downs. Classic Causeway is 11th in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” standings with 16 points.

Among Classic Causeway's Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby rivals are Giant Game, the third-place finisher in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar, trained by Dale Romans and to be ridden by Joe Talamo from the No. 5 post; Major General, winner of the G3 Iroquois Stakes on Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs in his most recent start, trained by five-time Tampa Bay Derby-winning conditioner Todd Pletcher, with Javier Castellano named to ride from the No. 8 post; and two-time stakes winner and Sam F. Davis runner-up Shipsational, trained by Edward Barker, with Manuel Franco aboard from the No. 9 post.

The exceptional Festival Day 42 lineup also consists of the Grade 2, $225,000 Hillsborough Stakes for fillies and mares 4-years-old-and-upward at a mile-and-an-eighth on the turf, which is the seventh race; the Grade 3, $200,000 Florida Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the turf, which is the ninth; the Grade 3, $100,000 Michelob Ultra Challenger Stakes for horses 4-and-upward at a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the main track, which is the eighth; and the $75,000 Columbia Stakes, for 3-year-olds going a mile on the turf, which is the 10th race.

One of the largest crowds in track history is expected Saturday. The 12-race card begins at noon, with gates opening at 10 a.m. General-admission tickets are $15, with the first 5,000 fans through the gates receiving a ”Mystery Mutuel Voucher” worth from $5-$1,000, with paid admission.

Nine horses are entered in the Hillsborough, in which a highly anticipated rematch is slated between 4-year-old fillies Bleecker Street (4-for-4) and Lady Speightspeare, the 1-2 finishers in the G3 Endeavour Stakes here on Feb. 5. Bleecker Street is trained by Chad Brown, who is tied with Pletcher for most Hillsborough victories with four apiece.

Bleecker Street will be ridden by Hector Rafael Diaz, Jr., the only jockey she has known. Lady Speightspeare, a Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old, is trained by Roger Attfield and has the services of Emma-Jayne Wilson, her only rider in six career starts.

Nine horses are entered in the Florida Oaks, with trainer Mark Casse's Mrs. Barbara and H. Graham Motion's Ambitieuse among the top contenders. Mrs. Barbara, who will be ridden by Rafael Manuel Hernandez, won the G3 Mazarine Stakes on Nov. 28 on the all-weather track at Woodbine in her most recent start, while Ambitieuse, whose jockey will be Franco, was second in the G3 Sweetest Chant Stakes on Feb. 5 at Gulfstream Park.

Also a strong contender is Alittleloveandluck, with Paco Lopez riding for trainer Mike Dini. She won the Ginger Brew Stakes on Jan. 1 on the turf at Gulfstream and was second in last month's Suncoast Stakes here on the main track.

A field of 10 older horses is expected for the Challenger Stakes. The seemingly omnipresent Pletcher has won the Challenger four times, including in 2017 with track record-holder Stanford, and he will send two out this year: 4-year-old Dynamic One, to be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., and 5-year-old War Stopper, who was third in last year's Challenger, to be ridden by Franco.

Also of considerable intrigue are Attfield's 5-year-old horse Shirl's Speight, who won the G3 Tampa Bay Stakes here on the turf on Feb. 5, with Wilson aboard; trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey, III's 4-year-old colt Greatest Honour, who won last year's G2 Fountain of Youth and G3 Holy Bull, to be ridden by Jose Ortiz; and Cody's Wish, who is riding a three-race winning streak for trainer Bill Mott, with Luis Saez riding.

There are 10 sophomore colts and geldings entered in the Columbia. Among the top contenders are the Lynch-trained Gingrich, with Saez named to ride, and Kitten Mischief, switching to turf after an eighth-place finish in the Sam F. Davis, trained by Jonathan Thomas, with Franco in the irons.

Lopez Suspended for Fountain of Youth Ride

Jockey Paco Lopez has been suspended 14 race days after Gulfstream Park stewards found him guilty of careless riding in Saturday's GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S., the track announced Wednesday. The jockey will be on probation through the remainder of the Championship Meet.

Lopez was aboard eventual runner-up In Due Time (Not This Time) when the field of 3-year-olds bunched up on the far turn of the Fountain of Youth. In Due Time shifted out, which looked to cause High Oak (Gormley), under Junior Alvarado, to clip heels and fall. Galt (Medaglia d'Oro) and jockey Joel Rosario fell as they attempted to avoid the fallen High Oak.

The stewards reviewed the incident after the race, but made no changes to the order of finish.

In announcing Lopez's suspension Wednesday, Gulfstream Park also announced that additional cameras would be added and installed in the near future to provide the stewards better views of each race on dirt, turf and Tapeta.
