Former Ballydoyle Charge Set For Hong Kong Debut

Call Me Teddy (Uncle Mo), who won the Listed Doncaster S. when trained by Aidan O'Brien as Lipizzaner, is set to make his Hong Kong debut in Saturday's Class 3 Tai Mei Tuk H. over the straight 1000-metres at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Bred in Kentucky by the Irish Lights Syndicate, the bay gelding was runner up in a paid of Naas maidens in the spring of 2020 before a low-odds fourth behind The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) and Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. After graduating at Navan first off a 47-day absence, Lipizzaner ran A Case Of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}) to 1 1/4 lengths in the G3 Anglesey S. that October and stayed on well to be fourth behind Golden Pal in the G2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

On the board in two of four starts at three, Lipizzaner makes his first local appearance off a mark of 69, having finished runner-up under 140 pounds in a five-furlong handicap over the Dundalk all-weather when last seen July 12.

“I've had a look at his Irish and English form and I'm obviously very encouraged by what I've seen, actually,” said jockey Harry Bentley, who takes the call from trainer Michael Chang. “He's aimed at some very good races, clearly Aidan thought plenty of him. He won the Doncaster S., a listed race, and he looked pretty impressive.

“My only concern is that all of this form seems to be on either soft or heavy ground. I know he's run on good a couple of times [but] the fact he's going to run on much quicker than on Saturday is a little bit of a concern but hopefully it won't be too much of a concern.

“I have trialled him twice on the turf (video) and he seemed absolutely fine. I've been very encouraged by what I've seem so far. He certainly has shown plenty of speed. He travels extremely well.”

A $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Call Me Teddy is out of 2009 G1 Schweppes The Thousand Guineas heroine Irish Lights (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), also the dam of Australian Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Omei Sword (Aus) (High Chaparral {Ire}). This is also the family of the Broodmare of the Year Fall Aspen (Pretense).

Saturday’s Insights: American Pharoah Filly Arrives at Aqueduct

WITH BELLS ON (American Pharoah) starts her career for owners Bass Stables LLC and Cheyenne Stables after realizing $300,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The dam, a juvenile stakes winner on the turf by Giant's Causeway, has already produced two winners on the dirt including Princess Mo (Uncle Mo). Second dam Marylebone (Unbridled's Song) was also a stakes winning juvenile, taking the GI Matron S. Trainer Todd Pletcher is 11-36 over the last five years with 3-year-old first-time starters on the dirt at Aqueduct and looks to add to that tally here. TJCIS PPs 

MILLION-DOLLAR YEARLING FILLY DEBUTS AT TAMPA

6th-TAM, $40K, Msw, 3yo, f, 6f, 2:44 p.m.

   When the hammer finally dropped at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, GINA ROMANTICA (Into Mischief) left the ring for a final bid of $1,025,000, another million-dollar feather in her sire's cap. The filly makes her career debut here for owner Peter Brant and trainer Chad Brown after several quick works at Payson Park, including her most recent Mar. 6 where she went four furlongs in :49 4/5 to be the third-fastest of 33 at the distance. Gina Romantica is out of the prolific broodmare Special Me (Unbridled's Song) who, though not a winner herself, has produced the likes of MGSW Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast), MGSW Special Forces (Candy Ride) and MGSW and Lane's End stallion Gift Box (Twirling Candy). She picks up Irad Ortiz for the ride. TJCIS PPs

INTO MISCHIEF COLT TAKES ON THE TURF

6th-GP, $60K, Msw, 3yo, 7 1/2fT, 3:01 p.m.

Bred by Hare Forest Farm, WATASHA (Into Mischief) tries the turf for the first time for trainer Chad Brown. The bay colt realized a final bid of $450,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and returns off an eight-month layoff since making his only start as a juvenile, a distant fifth-place effort on the dirt July 24 at Saratoga. Watasha will seek to be the seventh winner out of the Elusive Quality mare Alwaan. He adds Lasix for the first time here, stretches out the extra furlong and a half, and gets Tyler Gaffalione aboard. SPEEDY LORD NELSON COLT REACHES DEBUT

9th-GP, $60K, Msw, 3yo, 6f, 4:38 p.m.

From the first crop of recently deceased stallion Lord Nelson, CAPE TRAFALGAR (Lord Nelson) makes his first start at Gulfstream Park for owner Peachtree Stable. Bred by Spendthrift Farm LLC, the colt brought $325,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Sale, the second highest price paid for a Lord Nelson yearling that year. Cape Trafalgar is out of Goldrush Girl (Political Force), who placed second in the GII Golden Rod S. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., he comes into this race off a bullet drill Mar. 5 where he worked five furlongs in :59 to be the best of 31 at the distance. TJCIS PPs

$5,642 Payout In Stronach 5; Biggest Price In Sequence Was $13.20

There were 21 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each worth $5,642.30.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park, and Golden Gate Fields with a low 12 percent takeout. Two of the five legs produced payouts of more than $8, and both came at Gulfstream.

The Stronach 5 kicked off with the 3-1 shot Titan's Will and Johan Rosado winning Laurel's ninth race. It was the gelding's seventh career win and first at the 1 1/8-mile distance. The action shifted to Santa Anita Park for the second leg of the sequence and the 2-1 shot Increase Stakes holding off Youte. Gulfstream's eighth race served as the third leg and it was Merseyside pulling off a bit of an upset at odds of 5-1. Smarmy, the 1-2 favorite, broke poorly and finished third.

Golden Gate's third race, the fourth leg of the sequence, was won by 2-1 favorite Absolute Scenes, who drove past the field inside the final sixteenth. The Stronach 5 concluded with Gulfstream's ninth race and Sanura driving to victory for trainer Barclay Tagg and jockey Julien Leparoux at odds of 9-2.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
