Dolce Zel Upstages Stablemate To Win Florida Oaks In U.S. Bow

Dolce Zel made her U.S. debut in style Saturday when thrusting her head in front of stablemate Spicer in the stretch and holding on to capture the $200,000 Florida Oaks (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs,

Both the winner and runner-up are trained by Chad Brown, who earlier on the card sent out the top two finishers in the Hillsborough Stakes (G2): winner Bleecker Street and runner-up Rocky Sky.

Dolce Zel was a maiden winner at Longchamp in France in her second start before shipping to the U.S. and bridging a big class leap to graded competition in the Florida Oaks.

Under Irad Ortiz Jr., Dolce Zel stalked the front-runners from third then fourth before easing out for running room into the stretch. She dug in on cue and collared Spicer with a sixteenth to run and held on for the win with only a reminding tap of whip from Ortiz.

“I had a perfect trip, to be honest,” Ortiz said. “I was in beautiful position going into the first turn. Up the backside I followed the horse to beat, and that was the other filly for Chad (runner-up Spicer). She's a real nice filly, so I had her like a target. By the far turn, it looked like I was in good position and ready to roll, but Chad told me that when she makes the lead early she can wait on horses. So I was ready for that. When she hit the lead, she kind of waited a little bit for the other horses, so I hit her one time and she responded very well. She looks like a nice filly. She was ready today and she did everything right.”

Spicer, the 2-1 favorite outfinished On Alert, who rallied from last to take third, 1 1 /2 lengths back.

Dolce Zel, a 3-year-old French-bred daughter Zelzal out of the Dr Fong mare Dolce Attesa, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1: 44.18 on turf rated as good at the Oldsmar, Fla. track.

Sent off at 3-1, she returned $8.

Dolce Zel is owned by a partnership that includes Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Robert V. LaPenta.

Ce Ce Repels Pauline’s Pearl, Shedaresthedevil To Win Azeri

Bo Hirsch's homebred female sprint champion Ce Ce stretched out to 1 1/16 miles in her second start of the year, defeating a determined Pauline's Pearl and even-money favorite Shedaresthedevil in a memorable renewal of Saturday's Grade 2 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer Michael McCarthy, the 6-year-old mare by Elusive Quality fought off both distaff rivals in an exciting stretch duel to win by three-quarters of a length over the Steve Asmussen-trained Pauline's Pearl, with Shedaresthedevil – making her first start since finishing sixth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff last November – a length back in third.

Time of the race was 1:43.55 on a fast following fractions (set by Shedaresthedevil) of :23.44, :47.53, 1:12.20 and 1:37.33.

Winning for the ninth time in 18 career starts, Ce Ce – produced from the G1-winning Belong to Me mare Miss Houdini) – paid $5.40 to win as the second betting choice.

The Azeri is named for the three-time older female champion, 2002 Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame mare who won Oaklawn's premier race for fillies and mares, the G1 Apple Blossom three years in a row, from 2002-'04.

The top three finishers could very well be rematched in this year's Apple Blossom, to be run on April 23. Espinoza guided Ce Ce to victory in the 2020 Apple Blossom.

Shedaresthedevil and jockey Florent Geroux broke on top and beat the field to the first turn, getting a comfortable advantage for the run down the backstretch. Ce Ce settled into fourth position early, with Pauline's Pearl getting pinched at the break and racing in sixth of the seven starters early.

Rounding the far turn, Ce Ce ranged up alongside of Shedaresthedevil, with Pauline's Pearl and Joel Rosario in hot pursuit of the top pair and swinging three wide into the stretch. Ce Ce put her head in front at the top of the stretch opened up by one length in midstretch, but Pauline's Pearl was bearing down on the outside and Shedaresthedevil battling back along the rail. Under steady urging from Espinoza, Ce Ce repelled them both in the final sixteenth of a mile.

“I had a good trip actually,” said Espinoza. “I was able to get clear at the break so I could sit behind the frontrunners. I wanted to wait a little longer, but she was doing it so easy, I just moved on with her. She could hear all the noise from the crowd and kind of put the brakes on me, but luckily the other two horses (Pauline's Pearl and Shedaresthedevil) were on either side of me and when she saw them, she moved forward. It's like she runs so easy, she gets a little bit bored and does some silly things, but it all worked out.”

McCarthy, who was not at Oaklawn but spoke by phone to Oaklawn's publicist, said: “I thought Victor (Espinoza) did a great job, kind of being able to tuck in, sit right outside of the speed, keep her face clear. Up the backside, it was a little bit tactical there. He was able to go ahead and hold his position. Looked like Lady Mystify was in kind of a spot there and able to go ahead and just hold his own and around the turn it looked like Victor and her were full of run. Obviously, coming to the top of the stretch, it looked like she was going to go ahead and put a little daylight between herself and everybody else. Coming to the sixteenth pole, I saw her ears go up and wasn't sure if she was getting tired or what. When those two other fillies came to her, she dug back in and showed what a champion she is today.”

Rosario, aboard the runner-up, said: “I didn't have a good break, but she did well. I thought for a second she would get her (Ce Ce), but she got the jump again on me. But she ran hard. She looked like she was ready to go. Little unlucky with the trip coming out of the gate, but like I said, she ran well.”

Classic Causeway All The Way In Tampa Bay Derby

Classic Causeway was first from the gate in the $400,000 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs and maintained control throughout to win by 2 1/2 lengths and stamp himself as an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby  (G1) this spring.

The son of Giant's Causeway moved to the top of the Kentucky Derby leaderboard upon earning 50 qualifying points for the Louisville classic May 7 at Churchill Downs. He has 66 total points, two more than Epicenter at 64.

Updated Kentucky Derby leaderboard

Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. for trainer Brian Lynch, Classic Causeway cruised through fractions of :23.67 the opening quarter mile and :48.17 for a half mile before getting the six furlongs in 1:13.18 with runner-up Grantham and Giant Game in pursuit. He bounded toward the finish line unchallenged to tally by 2 1/2 lengths while covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.90.

“He's just come into his own right now and just to watch him, he seems like a happy horse that enjoys his job,” Lynch said. “He's very, very good right now. He has always been a very good gate horse and he's a horse that actually loves the gate and is excited to walk into it. And as soon as they pop, he's off. That early speed is a great asset to have because you're going to stay out of trouble when you can break fast and clear. When you have a horse that can run them off their feet early, get a chance to take a breather and relax and still be able to finish, that is a great asset in a horse.”

Grantham held on for second, a neck in front of Shipsational in third, with Golden Ginger fourth in the field of 10.

The second, third and fourth finishers received 20, 10 and five Kentucky Derby qualifying points, respectively.

The 4-5 favorite, Classic Causeway is 2 for 2 this season after launching his 2022 campaign with victory in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) Feb. 12 at Tampa. He improved his career line to 3-1-1 from five starts, his record also including a third in the 2021 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland Race Course and second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, both last fall.

“He gave me the same performance again (as in the Sam F. Davis),” Ortiz said of Classic Causeway. “He broke good. He gave me good position and I just went from there. He was traveling perfect all the way to the three-eighths-mile pole. When I asked him, he was there. Getting close to the wire, he was looking around a little bit, but I felt I had a lot more horse. He's acting like he can carry his speed more. These last couple of races he's been acting after the wire like he still has more left. I don't want to jinx it, but I think there is something more there.”

Classic Causeway, whose earnings stand at $511,100, races as a homebred for Kentucky West Racing and Clarke M. Cooper Family Living Trust. His dam is the Thunder Gulch mare Private World.

Grantham and Shipsational's connections were not disappointed in their horses' efforts.

“He ran super,” trainer Michael Maker said of Grantham. “I'll talk it over with the connections and see, but I don't see why we won't go on from here and move forward. I think a very good horse beat us today so I have no complaints. He gave us everything he had today.”

Luis Saez, aboard Grantham, added: “He ran a big race. I was riding him from the half-mile pole and I thought he'd get a little tired, but he kept going. He kept trying.”

Edward Barker, trainer of Shipsational, said: “He lost a little too much ground, but I think he ran as good as he can run. We'll be alright. We'll come back and get another race, and we'll get the (Road to the Kentucky Derby) points. I'm not disappointed by the way he ran. He's a nice colt who tries hard all the time.”
