Edgeway Scoots To Dominating Las Flores Score

Pressured early by Private Mission, Hronis Racing's Edgeway sat a close second to the far turn and asserted her superiority approaching the quarter pole en route to a facile seven-length score in the $100,000 Las Flores Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita.

Trained by John Sadler and ridden by John Velazquez, Edgeway stopped the clock in 1:10.22 while notching her second graded stakes victory at the Arcadia, Calif. track.

With Sadler's Park Avenue scratching earlier in the day, Edgeway was drawn alongside two-time graded winner Private Mission, who drew the rail with Juan Hernandez.  With the scratch, the Las Flores, carded as Sunday's first race, boiled down to a field of four older fillies and mares with no show wagering.

Fresh off a gate to wire win going 6 ½ furlongs in the ungraded Kalookan Queen Stakes on Jan. 2, Edgeway, a 5-year-old mare by Competitive Edge, was off a 1-5 and paid $2.

“The focus with her is the fall, we want to get her back to the Breeders' Cup,” said Kosta Hronis.  “So staying home, not doing a lot of traveling with her until we have to is how we'll approach it.  We'll keep our options open and see how she comes out of the race and then make a plan for the next race.

“This early in the year, we're better off playing it this way.  It's a long season and she's five and has been fresh all along, so we'll just keep her that way and just kinda let her make her own schedule.”

Out of the Stormin Fever mare Magical Solution, Edgeway, who was second two starts back in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), now has four stakes wins to go with an overall mark of 11-7-2-1.  With the winner's share of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $656,360.

“She was more handy, I mean whatever I wanted to do, she was there when I asked her to do something,” said Velazquez, when comparing Edgeway's win today to her effort in the Kalookan Queen.  “When I called on her a little bit she was there instantly and in the stretch, I just kept her happy, not much effort though.”

Ridden by Juan Hernandez and trained by Bob Baffert, Private Mission, who had been idle since running sixth as the 3-5 favorite in the opening day La Brea Stakes (G1), was off at 9-5 while finishing second, five lengths in front of third-placed finisher Dynasty of Her Own.

Laurel-Based Wondrwherecraigis Heads To Dubai Golden Shaheen

After a few weeks of wondering where he would run next, Laurel Park-based Grade 3 winner Wondrwherecraigis will be halfway around the world for his next start later this month.

Trainer Brittany Russell said Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Wondrwherecraigis is scheduled to leave on a Monday flight from Miami to Dubai to run in the $2 million Golden Shaheen (G1) March 26 at Meydan Racecourse.

Winner of the Jan. 29 Fire Plug at Laurel in his lone start this year, Wondrwherecraigis worked a half-mile in :48.60 March 10 at Pimlico Race Course and left the next day for his stopover in South Florida.

Wondrwherecraigis was nominated to the seven-furlong General George (G3) Feb. 19 at Laurel and six-furlong Tom Fool (G3) March 5 at Aqueduct before the connections settled on the Golden Shaheen, contested at 1,200 meters or about six furlongs.

“Obviously it's a good purse and it seems like they take really good care of you in the sense of shipping the horse and taking care of the connections,” Russell said. “It's been a little bit of a back and forth. The majority of the partnership, they've been thinking Dubai. It was just sort of left up to the group.

“If you look around at where we are at this time of year and what we're going to do with him, it kind of seemed like, 'You know what? Let's go take a swing,' ” she added.

Wondrwherecraigis will take a two-race win streak into the Golden Shaheen. His 3 ¾-length triumph in the six-furlong Fire Plug was his first race since capturing the seven-furlong Bold Ruler Oct. 31 at Aqueduct, the first graded stakes victory for horse and trainer.

“He's doing really well,” Russell said. “Since the Fire Plug he's trained well, and now it's just about getting him over there and hoping he travels well, which I expect he will.”

The Bold Ruler win also came one day before Russell gave birth to a son, Rye, her second child with her husband, champion Maryland jockey Sheldon Russell. They are also parents to a 2 ½-year-old daughter, Edy.

Assistant trainer Amanda Olds is making the 7,826-mile trip from Miami to Dubai with Wondrwherecraigis and will oversee his training. The Russells plan to fly out the week of the race.

“It's kind of going to be sad to leave my children,” Brittany Russell said. “Of course I'm excited. It's quite an experience and I love this horse.”

Among those invited to the Golden Shaheen are Grade 1 winners Drain the Clock, based at Gulfstream Park, and California-based Dr. Schivel. Other horses on the final list of 10 include Japanese Group 3 winners Copano Kicking, fifth in last year's Golden Shaheen, and Red Le Zele, and Dubai-based multiple Group 3 winner Al Tariq.

“You're going to Dubai, so of course you're going to catch some monsters. We don't want to be 20-1 but, on the other hand, we're not going to be the favorite,” Russell said. “We're going over there with a horse who thinks he's on top of the world right now. Hopefully he's still thinking that when he leaves there.”

Six Share Furlong Bullet as OBS Under-Tack Show Concludes

The under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, twice delayed by weather, concluded Sunday in Central Florida with six juveniles sharing the fastest furlong time of :9 4/5 and three equaling the day's fastest quarter-mile time of :20 4/5.

The under-tack show opened as scheduled last Thursday morning, but the day's final set was pushed back by severe thunder storms in the area. The show's final session had been set for Saturday, but more bad weather caused sales officials to push the session back to Sunday.

“I think they did the best they could. A lot of it was out of their control,” said Wavertree Stables' Ciaran Dunne. “I think they did the right thing the first day by calling the last set. When people put a year's work into something, you don't want to go breeze in a rain storm. We get one chance and that's it. So I think they did the right thing. Given the fact that we had tornadoes yesterday, it was another good call. I think they did the best they could under the circumstances.”

Despite the delays, Dunne said the track played fairly throughout the three sessions of the under-tack show.

“From our point of view, I think the track was consistent all three days based on how they trained at home and how they prepped in there,” he said. “They all pretty much worked to expectations. I don't think anybody worked worse than we expected because of the track condition.”

Wavertree sent out its sixth juvenile of the under-tack show to work in :9 4/5 when hip 437, a colt from the first crop of GI Met Mile winner Mor Spirit, hit that mark Sunday morning. Out of Follow My Tail (Indian Charlie), the chestnut was purchased by the Redwings pinhooking partnership for $160,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale.

“He's always been a highly regarded horse,” Dunne said. “He is a beautiful physical, a lovely horse. He always has been. It wasn't unexpected that he would work really well. But you are always pleasantly surprised when they go that well.”

Dunne also pinhooked Mor Spirit, purchasing him for $85,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October sale in 2014 before reselling him for $650,000 the following year at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale.

Asked if he saw similarities between the two, Dunne said, “None whatsoever. They are both fancy movers who cover a lot of ground, but physically they are a lot different.”

Another first-crop sire represented by a :9 4/5 work Sunday was Bolt d'Oro. Hip 438 was the third colt by the multiple Grade I winner to hit that mark during the under-tack show. Out of Foolish Cause (Giant's Causeway), the dark bay colt is consigned by Top Line Sales and was purchased by the Gladwells' Exclusive Equine Investments for $200,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Hip 534, a daughter of Midshipman out of Kalistoga Girl (Tapit), covered her furlong in :9 4/5 for Cruzin' Thoroughbreds and hip 631, a colt by Goldencents out of Ms Hallie (Stormy Atlantic), worked in :9 4/5 for consignor Jose Munoz.

A pair of juveniles equaled Sunday's furlong bullet during the day's final set. Hip 544, a filly by Shackleford out of Key is to Win (Dixie Union) consigned by Longoria Training & Sales, completed her :9 4/5 work just before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Hip 545, a son of Uncaptured out of Keyvacious (Teuflesberg) consigned by Hawk's Rest LLC, turned in his :9 4/5 work some 15 minutes later.

Among the bullet :20 4/5 quarter-mile breezers Sunday was hip 446, a colt by Violence out of graded stakes winner Freedom Star (Street Cry {Ire}), who is consigned by Eddie Woods. Hip 456, a first-crop colt by multiple graded stakes winner Awesome Slew out of Genau (Into Mischief), turned in his :20 4/5 work for Ocala Stud.

Golden Rock Thoroughbreds sent out hip 521, a colt by Into Mischief out of Jellicle Song (Street Cry {Ire}), to work in :20 4/5.

A colt by Bayern (hip 139) turned in the under-tack show's fastest furlong of :9 3/5 during Thursday's first session, while a filly by Adios Charlie (hip 213) had the week's fastest quarter-mile work of :20 2/5 Friday.

The OBS March sale will begin Tuesday with a session which has been pushed back to a 1 p.m. start time to compensate for the delayed breezes. The auction's second and final session begins Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
