Simplification Gets Easy Breeze At Gulfstream

Tami Bobo's Simplification returned to the Gulfstream Park worktab Saturday morning for the first time since scoring a dominating 3 ½-length victory in the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) March 5 at the Hallandale Beach, Fla. track.

The Antonio Sano-trained 3-year-old son of Not This Time breezed five furlongs in 1:01.81 under jockey Jose Ortiz before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.85.

“It was a very good work. The horse worked in hand. He went very easy,” Sano said. “The gallop was good. The horse came back very good. That's what's important for me.”

Simplification rated well off the early pace before making a sweeping move to the lead and drawing away with authority to capture the Fountain of Youth. In the Feb. 5 Holy Bull (G3), the Florida-bred colt, who had won the Jan. 1 Mucho Macho Man with a strong front-running performance, broke last from the starting gate but recovered well enough following a wide trip to finish second behind loose-on-the-lead White Abarrio.

Trainer Kenny McPeek sent Lucky Seven Stable's Smile Happy and Rattle N Roll to the Gulfstream track to breeze in company following the break Saturday morning. Rattle N Roll on the inside and Smile Happy on the outside were credited with a joint bullet workout after breezing five furlongs in 58.81.
“They worked super. They both needed a steady one and they both zipped along,” McPeek said. “I was really pleased with both of them.”

McPeek said he hadn't yet chosen between the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) April 2 and the Blue Grass (G1) April 9 at Keeneland for Smile Happy's next start. Rattle N Roll, who finished fifth in the Fountain of Youth, is being pointed to next Saturday's Louisiana Derby (G1) at Fair Grounds.

Smile Happy closed to be second behind loose-on-the-lead Epicenter in the Risen Star (G2) February 19 in his 2022 debut after winning both of his races, including the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs, in 2021.

OGMA Investments and Jack Hardin Towell Jr.'s O Captain, who closed from last to finish third in the Fountain of Youth at 87-1, breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream in 1:01.14 Saturday morning. The Gustavo Delgado-trained son of Carpe Diem, who broke his maiden at first asking and finished third in the Limehouse in his two prior starts, is being pointed to the Florida Derby.

Jockey Leahey Records First Career Win

Apprentice jockey Hannah Leahey posted her first career riding victory Friday at Turf Paradise when guiding Freiburg from last to first in the eighth race.

Freiburg lacked early speed in the five-furlong starter optional claiming event but was full of run after going widest for the drive in the eight-horse field. Trained by Michael Bullene for owner Richard DeGraw, he won for the 11th time in 60 career starts.

Freiburg represents the third career mount for Leahey, who rode her first race professionally March 9 at Turf Paradise, finishing second with Paynt the Kitty.

Fireburn Uncorks Last To First Rally in Rich Golden Slipper

Fireburn launched a torrid rally from last and won the AU$5 million Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (G1), the world's richest races for 2-year-olds, Saturday at Rosehill Gardens in Australia.

Ridden by Brenton Avdulla, the daughter of Rebel Dane overcame interference mid-race but appeared to have no chance of winning. But after finding running room on the fence, she came in the final furlong, collared front-running colt Best of Bordeaux, attempting to lead all the way, and then drove clear to triumph by 2 ½ lengths.

Favorite Coolangatta was a long neck away third.

Time for the race, run at about six furlongs, was 1:12.79 on turf rated as heavy.

The winner was knocked nearly sideways and was shuffled back after interference at the 700 meter mark before Avdulla deftly found passage through the field en route to her unlikely victory.

“I didn't know you could have that many emotions in 70 seconds,” trainer Gary Portelli, who won the 2017 Golden Slipper with She Will Reign, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I was watching at her at the 700 (meter mark) and she got smashed.

“I dropped a couple of f-bombs and then looked for the colt (his other runner, Sejardan) and went off again because he was getting smashed as well.

“But coming to the turn I saw her coming up, and I know that when this filly has got something to chase, she gets it.

“At 300 (meters), I was believing it was going to happen again, and she roared home.”

Fireburn, who has won four of five starts, took home the AU$2.8 million winner's share, boosting her lifetime bankroll to AU$3,081,750.
Produced by the So You Think mare Mull Over, Fireburn is campaigned by a large partnership.

First Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Shown On American National TV A Success

The 2022 G1 Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup was broadcast for the first time on Fox Sports in the U.S. on Friday and was named a “resounding success”. Rachael Blackmore triumphed aboard A Plus Tard (Fr) (Kapgarde {Fr}) at Cheltenham Racecourse, and the experience impressed American television executives. Fox Sports, working with HBA Media and racecourse Media Group, took the Racing TV feed, fronted by Nick Luck, for an hour around the Gold Cup.

Tony Allevato, the Chief Revenue Officer of NYRA, who was experiencing the Cheltenham Festival for the first time, said, “Through our partnerships with HBA Media and Racecourse Media Group, we televised the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Fox Sports, which goes into 55 million homes. It was the first time the race was shown on national TV in the US.

“Fox broadcasts some of the biggest sporting events in the world, the football World Cup, World Series, Superbowl–and now the Cheltenham Gold Cup. We've had a lot of good feedback and it was a resounding success.

“Hopefully this is a starting point, and a chance to educate our viewers and get them familiar with Jump racing. We broadcast 900 hours of racing on Fox last year and to add Jump racing to that schedule can only be a positive thing.

“It was my first time to Cheltenham. It's a proper major league sporting event.”
