Grade 1 Winner Bella Sofia Posts First Workout Of Year At Belmont

Grade 1 winner Bella Sofia, who closed 2021 with a fourth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), returned to the work tab Sunday for the first time this year going three-eighths of a mile in :37.01 on Belmont Park's dirt training track. Trevor McCarthy was aboard.

“It was her first three-eighths and she worked very nice,” trainer Rudy Rodriguez said. “She galloped out in :52. She looks very good.”

The 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Patriot won 4-of-6 sophomore starts, taking the Grade 1 Longines Test in August at Saratoga ahead of a score in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap in September at Belmont. She completed her campaign in the Breeders' Cup at at Del Mar.

Rodriguez said he is hoping to map a route back to the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in November at Keeneland that will include stops at Belmont and Saratoga.

“We'll be patient with her and let her tell us when she's ready and then we can map out a plan,” Rodriguez said. “Our goal is to bring her back to the Breeders' Cup nice and fresh.”

Bella Sofia is owned by Michel Imperio, Vincent Scuderi, Sofia Soares, Gabrielle Farm, Mazel Stable Partners, Matthew Mercurio, Medallion Racing, Parkland Thoroughbreds and Barry Fowler.

Tesio-Bound Shake Em Loose Could Aim For Preakness

J R Sanchez Racing Stable's Shake Em Loose was “really happy” the morning after his mild upset in Saturday's Private Terms Stakes for 3-year-olds at Laurel Park, giving owner-trainer Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon reason to consider nominating the ex-claimer to the Triple Crown.

Third choice in a field of seven at 5-1, Shake Em Loose posted a 1 ¾-length victory in the about 1 1/16-mile Private Terms, his two-turn debut, turning away even-money favorite Joe down the stretch.

“He's doing great. He's really happy. He's a little tired, but he ran his guts out yesterday. He didn't want to get beat,” Sanchez-Salomon said Sunday. “Nothing is for sure in this game, but if you get a horse that runs like the way he did yesterday … I don't know what to tell you. I was just so excited to see him win.”

Sanchez-Salomon claimed Shake Em Loose, a gelded son of Grade 1 winner Shakin It Up, for $16,000 out of a maiden triumph last November at Laurel. He has won three of four starts since, including a 59-1 upset of the Dec. 26 in the Heft in the first race for his new connections. The lone loss came when he broke in the air in the Jan. 29 Spectacular Bid and finished seventh.

“The way I see it, every single race that he's run for me except for the one where he had the trouble and didn't run, he's improving and he's moving up little by little,” Sanchez-Salomon said. “He's an exciting horse. I hope we can keep doing what we're doing with him and he can keep getting better and better day by day.”

Shake Em Loose was not among the 312 early nominees for $600 to the Triple Crown by the initial Jan. 29 deadline. The second deadline is March 28 at a cost of $6,000. After that, supplemental nominations to each of the Triple Crown races can be made at the time of entry – $200,000 for the Kentucky Derby (G1), $150,000 for the Preakness (G1), and $50,000 for the Belmont (G1).

Sanchez-Salomon is pointing Shake Em Loose to the $125,000 Federico Tesio going 1 1/8 miles April 16 at Laurel. For the seventh straight year, the Tesio is a 'Win and In' qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the Preakness, to be held May 21 at historic Pimlico Race Course.

“My next step is the Federico Tesio,” Sanchez-Salomon said. “I think we're going to pay the money to nominate him to the Preakness. I feel really good about him. I want to wait and see how he does this week, but he's really good, really happy this morning.”

The Tesio is also a possibility for The Elkstone Group's homebred stakes-winner Joe, Maryland's champion 2-year-old of 2021 who had a three-race win streak snapped in the Private Terms.

“It's surely in play if he's training well and doing well,” trainer Michael Trombetta said Sunday. “It certainly makes sense.

Joe, whose streak included wins in the Maryland Juvenile and an optional claiming allowance Jan. 23 in his two-turn debt, settled in mid-pack in the Private Terms and loomed a threat once straightened for home but could not get to the winner.

“I was hoping he'd do a little better, but he still ran a good race,” Trombetta said. “He kind of found himself in a strange traffic thing there at the sixteenth pole. I think he was kind of drifting in and the other horse was kind of drifting out a little bit and we had to correct and straighten and maybe lost a little momentum, but we still couldn't figure out a way to get past the last horse. It just wasn't smooth, but other than that he ran well.”

White Abarrio Relaxed In Easy Breeze Ahead Of Florida Derby

C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable's White Abarrio breezed an easy five furlongs Sunday at Gulfstream Park, giving trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. confidence that the son of Race Day will be at his best for the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) in two weeks.

“Two weeks out, so far, so good. Two weeks is a long time with horses, but as far as everything has gone preparation-wise, I'm very happy with how things have gone,” Joseph said.

White Abarrio, who breezed in company for his fourth workout since capturing the Feb. 5 Holy Bull (G3), was timed in 1:00.42, the fourth fastest clocking of 17 recorded at the distance.

“Today was more of an easier breeze with a good finish and a good gallop-out,” Joseph said. “Everything went to plan. He sat off a workmate; he relaxed well. I had his last quarter in :23, so it was a good finish.”

Tyler Gaffalione was aboard for the breeze.

White Abarrio is coming off a 4 ½-length romp in the Holy Bull, in which Simplification finished second before coming back to capture the March 5 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) impressively.

White Abarrio debuted with an impressive 6 ¾-length victory at Gulfstream Sept. 24 before being purchased privately by his current connections, for whom he scored a four-length optional claiming allowance victory Oct. 29. He concluded his juvenile campaign with a third-place finish behind Smile Happy and Classic Causeway in the Nov. 27 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs.

Joseph reported that Slam Dunk Racing, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables, and Michael Nentwig's Drain the Clock has settled in well at Meydan ahead of his scheduled start in the $2 million Golden Shaheen on Saturday's Dubai World Cup Day card.

“He had a little blow-out over there this morning and went nice and cooled out well,” said Joseph, who has opted not to travel to Dubai. “He's showing a lot of energy. We're happy where he's at. Hopefully, he has a good week. I think he's going to run a very big race.”

The 4-year-old son of MacLean's Music captured the Swale (G3) at Gulfstream, the Bay Shore (G3) at Aqueduct and the Woody Stephens (G1) at Belmont Park during his 3-year-old campaign that was closed out with a six-furlong optional claiming allowance victory in 1:08.62 Dec. 10. Drain the Clock was upset by Miles Ahead in a swiftly run Gulfstream Park Sprint Feb. 19.

Into Mischief, American Pharoah Among U.S. Sires With Offspring In Dubai Breeze Sale

There are 69 horses that have arrived in Dubai ahead of the first ever Dubai Breeze-up Sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The two-year-olds hail from many of the leading breeze-up consignors in Ireland and the UK, and the sires represented include American Pharoah, Arrogate, Curlin, Dark Angel, Dubawi, Exceed And Excel, Frankel, Gun Runner, Into Mischief, Invincible Spirit, Justify, Kodiac, Kingman, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, More Than Ready, Night Of Thunder, Pioneerof the Nile, Showcasing, Siyouni, Starspangledbanner, Uncle Mo, and Wootton Bassett.

A name that jumps immediately off the page is that of Polar River, winner of both the listed UAE 1000 Guineas and UAE Oaks (G3) in 2016. Her second foal, a colt by American Pharoah, is cataloged as Lot 36.

Peeping Fawn was a wonderful runner for trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore, collecting the Irish Oaks (G1) among her four top-flight victories. She is represented by Lot 31, a colt by Daiwa Major.

Hawkbill, a son of Kitten's Joy, won on 10 occasions for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, highlighted by the 2016 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and 2018 Sheema Classic at Meydan, both Group 1 events. His three-parts brother, by Kitten's Joy from the unraced Hard Spun mare Hard Cloth, is another to catch the eye, going through as Lot 22.

Given the ongoing continued success of his stock worldwide and especially in the UAE, the only offering by Dubawi, a filly, will surely be eagerly awaited. She is a half-sister to a winner out of Joyful Hope, a listed winner herself and full sister to Italian Derby (G1) victor Crackerjack King. They are also half-siblings to Group 1 winners Jakkalberry and Awelmarduk.

There is also a Maclean's Music half-brother to Grade 1 winners Majestic Harbor and Danza, as well as a Dark Angel half-brother to the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Tarnawa and a Sea The Moon filly who is closely related to Stradivarius.

Impressing during morning training has been Lot 1, a good-looking son of Gun Runner out of Grade 2 winner Bank Audit. He is consigned by Mickey Cleere of MC Thoroughbreds, who has three in the sale.

“We have three really nice horses; a Gun Runner colt, a Raven's Pass colt (Lot 5) and an Into Mischief filly, (Lot 67)” he said. “The flight and preparations have gone very well and we haven't done much differently to if it was a normal breeze-up sale, taking place later in April or May.

“This is a great idea and I hope it is a successful sale for everybody.”

Former jockey Eddie Ahern consigns Lot 41, a colt by Showcasing out of U.S. Grade 1 winner Rosinka, who he rode himself on Monday morning to help the youngster get a feel for the track.

“Everything has gone very well and the horses all seem to have settled in nicely,” he said. “Showcasing has had success in Dubai and this lad is a nice type so we're hoping for a good sale.”

Goffs' International Client Relations Consultant, Tom Taaffe, in Dubai to organize the sale commented:  “All of the horses have arrived and are stabled at Nofa Quarantine, where it is nice and quiet. They are using the first two days for some gentle exercise on the Tapeta track before the breeze on Tuesday. So far everything has gone smoothly and we are very happy.  We've had a lot of interest from buyers already and look forward to seeing everyone here on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

The breeze takes place on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:45 a.m. on the training track and the sale takes place on Wednesday, March 23, at 5 p.m. in the parade ring at Meydan Racecourse. Potential purchasers intending to bid, whether in person or online using the GoffsOnline.com platform, are required to register with Dubai Racing Club in advance.
