Olympiad Gets the Gold in Mineshaft

Bill Mott's patient handling paid off with the well-regarded Olympiad, who earned his graded stakes badge in the Mineshaft Saturday. Stalking Silver Prospector from second through early splits of :24.18 and :48.11, the even-money favorite turned up the heat on the backstretch run and jumped clear in the lane to win with ease. Silver Prospector held second and Miles D completed the trifecta.

Graduating at Saratoga in September of 2020, Olympiad checked in second behind GI Runhappy Malibu S. runner-up Baby Yoda (Prospective) in a Saratoga allowance exactly 364 days later. The $700,00 KEESEP buy captured a Keeneland allowance in October and was fourth next out to 'TDN Rising Star' Americanrevolution (Constitution) in Aqueduct's GI Cigar Mile H. Dec. 4. Olympiad ran away to a 7 1/4-length score in a two-turn optional claimer at Gulfstream Jan. 15, earning a gaudy 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Pedigree Notes:
Olympiad is the 63rd graded winner and 128th black-type scorer for the timeless Speightstown. The winner is also the 18th graded winner and 52nd black-type victor out of a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro. The Speightstown/Medaglia d'Oro cross is also responsible for Grade I winners Rock Fall and Competitionofideas. Olympiad is the second foal out of GSP Tokyo Time, who is also the dam of the once-raced 3-year-old filly Friendship Road (Quality Road); a juvenile filly by War Front, who brought $450,000 from Larkin Armstrong at KEESEP; and a yearling colt by American Pharoah. The half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Hungry Island (More Than Ready) and MGSW Soaring Empire (Empire Maker) is currently expecting a foal by Quality Road. This is also the family of GISWs Preservationist (Arch), Harmonize (Scat Daddy) and Keen Ice (Curlin).

Laurel Park: Nellie Morse To Kiss The Girl; Galerio Takes John B. Campbell

Three Diamonds Farm's Kiss the Girl split horses down the stretch to win Saturday's $100,000 Nellie Morse at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., for her second consecutive stakes win.

Trained by Michael Trombetta and ridden by Victor Carrasco, Kiss the Girl covered the 1 1/16 mile in 1:45.60.

A 5-year-old daughter of Into Mischief out of the unraced Hard Spun mare Spin the Bottle, Kiss the Girl, a stakes winner on dirt and turf, has now won eight of 23 starts. Prior to the Nellie Morse, Kiss the Girl won Laurel's Geisha Jan. 29. The mare also won the All Brandy at Pimlico last year on the turf and was third earlier this year in the Ladies at Aqueduct.

“She's been great and she's quickly becoming one of my favorite horses,” Trombetta said.

Breaking cleanly from the gate, Carrasco and Kiss the Girl entered the first turn and the backstretch fourth while Smooth With a Kick was pressed by Artful Splatter past fractions of :23.66 and 47:16. Kiss the Girl moved into second along the rail around the final turn but Carrasco was forced to steady slightly trying to find a way between the two leaders. Past the eighth pole, Carrasco found a seam between a game Artful Splatter and a tiring Smooth With a Kick before driving away to a 1 ¼ length victory.

“She keeps surprising me,” Trombetta said. “She runs hard every time and today she had some adversity turning for home and Victor did a great job. He just had to regroup and get a little patient and find another avenue to get home. But she came through and he did a good job of helping her.”

Galerio Gets First Stakes Win in Campbell
Galerio, claimed in November for $50,000 by trainer John Salzman Jr. for owners Bird Mobberley LLC and Grady Griffin, held off a closing Forewarned to win the $100,000 John B. Campbell by a nose.

A 6-year-old gelding by Jump Start, Galerio has been a model of consistency throughout his career, winning 10 of 33 starts and placing second 15 times. Prior to her victory in Campbell, Galerio had finished third in the Jennings. Last summer she checked in third in the Salvatore Mile (G3) and second in four others stakes.

“Every race he runs in his life he runs his eyeballs out,” said Saltzman, who won two of the six stakes at Laurel Saturday. “He's a very nice horse. The good part is to have owners like this. I called them, they never questioned [claiming him]. He does everything perfect. He's an easy horse to train.”

While the 6-5 favorite Workin On a Dream and Gentleman Joe raced on the front through fractions of :23.83 and :46.66, jockey J.D. Acosta raced in third with Galerio before moving three-wide around the final turn and taking the lead above the eighth pole. A late rally by Forewarned wasn't enough to catch the winner.

“It was close,” Acosta admitted. “The thing about this horse, he loves to finish second. He's the kind of horse where you think you're going to win by 20 turning for home and then he puts his head back and he starts running. When I saw that horse coming I said, 'Not another second.' But he got the job done.”

Galerio covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.67.

Horsemen’s Rep Says Vitali Meth Positive is Environmental Contamination

In his fight to get out of as one-year suspension after a horse of his tested positive for methamphetamine, controversial trainer Marcus Vitali will have at least one person in his corner. Todd Mostoller, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents horsemen at Penn National and Presque Isle Downs, said that the methamphetamine positive was a result of environmental contamination and that Vital should not have been suspended

“This is somebody who did absolutely nothing wrong,” Mostoller said.

On Friday, the Pennsylvania Racing Commission published its ruling in which Vitali was suspended for one year and fined $10,000 after the horse Single Lady (Shanghai Bobby) tested positive for d-methamphetamine after winning a Aug. 21 maiden special weight race at Presque Isle Downs. Vitali has appealed the suspension.

Mostoller believes the filly came into contact with someone who had been using the drug, and that's how it got into her system.

“The bottom line is that this is environmental contamination,” he said. “There have been a number of methamphetamine positives in Pennsylvania. They've all been at the extremely small picogram level. No one gave methamphetamine to a horse. It's in the environment around us. It's a problem. And our industry has yet to really deal with the problem.”

Mostoller said there have been “three or four” other methamphetamine positives between Presque Isle Downs and Penn National in recent months and that in all other cases the stewards found there were extenuating circumstances and the trainers were not held responsible. The TDN was not able to confirm Mostoller's contention.

In 2017, a Peter Miller-trained horse tested positive for methamphetamine after running in the Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Penn National. The Pennsylvania Racing Commission ruled that there were “mitigating circumstances” and fined Miller $1,500 but did not suspend him.

In 2016, five horses at Lone Star Park tested positive for meth. The Texas Racing Commission concluded that the horses were contaminated by their handlers and, while the horses were disqualified, the trainers were not penalized

Mostoller hinted that Vitali, who has been in and put of trouble for years, might be treated differently than others.

“This is absurd. It goes beyond common sense,” he said. “Unfortunately for Vitali, he is a hot-button name.”

But Mostoller went on to explain that in the other recent meth cases, it was confirmed that someone handling the horses had used meth. That has not happened with Single Lady.

“In this case, nobody tried to find the source,” he said. “No employees were tested. So, you're certainly not going to find the source of environmental contamination if you don't look for it. This is under appeal and we'll see where it goes from there.”

Single Lady is owned by Carolyn Vogel, 80, who races under the name of Cross Sabres Farm. Prior to Vitali filing for an appeal, Single Lady was placed on the stewards' list for 90 days.  Vogel has been one of Vitali's most loyal owners and has stuck by him despite the trainer's history. She said she has seven horses with him and when asked if she intended to keep them with Vitali she responded, “I will stick by him until further notice.”

When asked what she likes about Vitali, she responded: “He is very good with legs and he is very hands on. He doesn't have too many horses and he is not real expensive. He makes it more affordable and fun.”

Is she concerned about his reputation?

“I don't think he is a cheater,” she said. “He might push the envelope, but he doesn't cheat.”

Vitali is currently racing at Turf Paradise and, due to the appeal, has remained eligible to race there. He has horses entered there on Tuesday and Friday. Both are owned by Vogel.

Local Motive Best In Miracle Wood; Wide Country Win Gives Luna Belle Third Straight

Bird Mobberley's Local Motive, still a work in progress for trainer John Salzman Jr., took another step forward Saturday at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., with a two-length victory in the $100,000 Miracle Wood for 3-year-olds.

The 27th  running of the one-mile Miracle Wood and the 29th renewal of the $100,000 Wide Country for 3-year-old fillies were among six stakes, two graded, worth $900,000 on a rich winter program headlined by the $250,000 Barbara Fritchie (G3) and $250,000 General George (G3) for older sprinters.

Local Motive ($9.20) completed the distance in 1:39.14 over a fast main track under regular rider J.D. Acosta. Majestic Frontier ran second, 2 ½ lengths ahead of Heffner, who edged previously undefeated Perfect Day by a head for third. All three horses were making their stakes debut.

Meanwhile, it was the third stakes win from nine career starts for Local Motive, who opened his sophomore campaign running third to Witty in the seven-furlong Spectacular Bid Jan. 29 at Laurel. As a 2-year-old, he won the Hickory Tree on the Colonial Downs turf and James F. Lewis III over Laurel's main track in mid-November.

“He's a nice horse, he's just had some issues. The last time he ran the dirt hit him again like it did at Timonium and he got back a ways, but luckily J.D. knew him and he didn't pull him up, he just kept getting into him and he came running. I think he got beat by a nice horse,” Salzman said. “I think he beat some decent horses here today. He's done everything I've asked of him. He's going to get better. He's still green. Everything's got to be just right for him. J.D. has gotten to know him and that helps a lot. I'm really pleased with him.”

Perfect Day broke alertly from the inside post and was pressed by Local Motive through a quarter-mile in 24.17 seconds and a half in 47.24 tracked by narrow 9-5 favorite Conclusive with Majestic Frontier saving ground in fourth. Local Motive had plenty of run left approaching the stretch and powered through the lane to turn back Majestic Frontier and win by 1 ¼ lengths.

“[Acosta] keeps begging me to put blinkers on him, so we put blinkers on him [in the morning] and he doesn't pay any attention. He's worse. It's hard for me to change and put blinkers on him the way he runs,” Salzman said. “We're working through it. I've worked him in behind horses and dirt hits him and he won't go up in between them. We're trying. It's just taking a little longer than usual, but he's getting it.

“Today it just set up perfect where there wasn't a lot of speed and he was outside. It set up just like we talked about, and he fired on,” he added. “He ran good. I'm real pleased with him.”

Salzman hinted the $100,000 Private Terms going about 1 1/16 miles March 19 at Laurel could be in play for Local Motive. The Private Terms is the next step in Maryland's series of stakes for 3-year-olds, followed by the $125,000 Federico Tesio going 1 1/8 miles April 16. The Tesio is a 'Win and In' qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the 147thPreakness (G1) May 21 at historic Pimlico Race Course.

'I've got to think about it, but probably. It's right here at home, so there's a good possibility. We'll see how he comes out of this and how much it takes out of him,” Salzman said. “He took this today, and into this wind, too. We'll see how he is and then we'll go forward from there.”

Luna Belle Makes It Three Straight Wins in $100,000 Wide Country
Some early anxious moments were quickly erased as Luna Belle came charging through the stretch on the far outside to sweep past her rivals and extend her win streak to three straight stakes in the $100,000 Wide Country.

Luna Belle ($2.80) ran seven furlongs in 1:24.71 over a fast main track to win by three lengths under Denis Araujuo, also aboard for victories in the Maryland Juvenile Fillies in December and the Jan. 29 Xtra Heat.

Sent off as the 2-5 favorite in a field of eight, Araujo was unhurried as Luna Belle broke from the rail and wound up in some traffic up the backstretch and into the far turn before the jockey was able to tip out at the head of the stretch and set the daughter of Great Notion down for a drive to catch pacesetter Sandy's Garden and roll past.

“Yeah, for the first five-eighths of a mile I was [worried]. She was dead last and it looked like she got in a little trouble around the turn and [Araujo] was kind of wiggling his way around there a little bit,” trainer Hamilton Smith said. “But, once she got clear she came running like she has in her past races.”

Smith also co-owns Luna Belle with Deborah Greene, and they also bred the horse with Greene's late father, Fred Greene, Jr.

“I wish my dad was here. I miss him, but this is an incredible ride and I'm enjoying the heck out of it,” Greene said.

She Is Wisky, the longest shot in the field at 50-1, ran second by 4 ½ lengths over Sandy's Garden, who set fractions of 23.11 seconds, 46.24 and 1:11.80. It was 1 ½ lengths back to Qualy followed by Buff My Boots, Moody Woman, Beneath the Stars and Money's Worth.

Next up on Maryland's stakes series for 3-year-old fillies is the $100,000 Beyond the Wire going one mile March 19, followed by the $100,000 Weber City Miss at about 1 1/16 miles April 16, a 'Win and In' qualifier for the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) May 20 at historic Pimlico Race Course.

“I like them going two turns. I don't think she'll have a problem with it,” Smith said. “The way she runs her races she looks like she can run all day, actually. She's kind of push-button. You can rate her back and when you ask her to go, she goes.”
