Clairiere Half-Sister La Crete Undergoes Successful Surgery To Repair Condylar Fracture

The half-sister to millionaire Grade 1 winner Clairiere, La Crete suffered a condylar fracture during the running of Saturday's Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La. According to the Daily Racing Form, the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro underwent a successful surgical repair on Sunday by Ocala Equine's Dr. John Madison at Louisiana State University's Equine Surgery Center.

Both fillies are out of Cavorting, the three-time Grade 1-winning earner of over $2 million.

La Crete won her first two starts for owner/breeder Stonestreet, including the listed Silverbulletday Stakes in January.

La Crete, trained by Steve Asmussen, was at the front of the field at the half-mile pole when jockey Joel Rosario pulled her up abruptly. She was vanned off, and is now recovering well from surgery.

“She's doing really well,” Stonestreet trainer Ian Brennan told DRF. “I just talked to the clinic this morning. The surgery went really good and she's recovering really well. She's in good form this morning. She'll be out for 60 to 90 days and then we'll make a decision.”

Super Saturday Next For Acklam Express

Trainer Nigel Tinkler was upbeat after his Group 1-placed Acklam Express (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) finished second to Lazuli (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Blue Point Sprint at Meydan on Friday. Placed in three starts during last year's Dubai World Cup Carnival, including a third-place effort in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint, he never factored in York's Listed Westow S. in May. He tired to 10th in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot and was given some time off prior to his reappearance in the UAE. Starts in the G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint on Mar. 5 and another run in the Al Quoz at the end of March are next on the 4-year-old's agenda.

“He ran very nice,” said Tinkler. “I couldn't be more pleased and he stays out there now. He's going to run on Super Saturday and then World Cup night, all being well. He's bucking and squealing so we're happy.”

The MSP Racing and M Spence-owned gelding's long-term European aims are still up in the air.

“I think we'll give him a little break when he gets back,” Tinkler added. “I don't think we'll get him ready for the Duke of York. We might wait for Ascot probably. We'll play all that by ear. If we can get some money in the pocket, we'll be very happy.”

‘Improving’ Epicenter To Target Louisiana Derby; Zandon To Blue Grass

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Epicenter is expected to target the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby after Saturday's dominating triumph in the G2 Risen Star, reports the Daily Racing Form.

“He's been doing in the afternoon what he's showing in the morning – that he's improving,” Asmussen told DRF.

Trainer Steve Asmussen plans to work the 3-year-old son of Not This Time three times before his final prep for the Kentucky Derby.

Runner-up Smile Happy, behind rivals for part of the far turn, ran on well in the stretch. Trainer Ken McPeek has not decided on a next start for the son of Runhappy.

Third-place finisher Zandon pleased trainer Chad Brown in just his third career start. The son of Upstart will likely make his next start in the G1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

The Story Of Mishriff: Saudi Cup Repeat Would Make Him Richest Horse In History

Mishriff will become the highest earning racehorse of all time if he successfully defends his crown in The Saudi Cup on Saturday and the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia has commissioned a short film – The Story of Mishriff – to celebrate his career so far.

Owned and bred by Prince A A Faisal, Mishriff has competed at the first two Saudi Cup meetings and in the film his owner-breeder tells presenter Nick Luck that he looked “horrible” when he first saw pictures of him as a foal before turning into “a proper horse.”

The horse has extra significance for Prince Faisal having been named after his former trainer, Mishriff, who taught him the “Arab way of looking at a horse.” After being reared at Coolmore, Mishriff was sent to John Gosden, who Prince Faisal describes as “the best trainer in the world.”

Gosden says he needed time to fill into his frame when he first came to the yard, but he had a tremendous three-year-old year before showing his versatility by being able to cope with the American pace in The Saudi Cup and then going on to land the Sheema Classic on turf over a mile and a half (2400m).

He says: “The plan has always been to come back again for The Saudi Cup, and it looks a mighty tough field but so it should be.”

David Egan was just 21 years old when winning the race 12 months ago and the Irish jockey describes how much the victory meant to him: “The Saudi Cup meeting has obviously had a huge impact on my life. Prince Faisal, who has been in the racing industry for so long, and to be able to win it with a horse he bred must have been very special for him. For me to be able to deliver that was very heartwarming.”

Finally, Prince Faisal explains the love he has for horses: “Nobody loves racing and horses like Arabs. I just love the horse and I think that people who don't love horses shouldn't have anything to do with racing. This is the whole thing, if you don't enjoy it, leave it.”

The Story of Mishriff was filmed and produced by Equine Productions.
