Fallon Promoted To Qatar Racing Number One

Cieren Fallon, who has been Qatar Racing's number two rider to Oisin Murphy since August of 2020, has been promoted to the number one role with Murphy this week sidelined by the British Horseracing Authority for 14 months. Murphy, who handed in his license in December to focus on his rehabilitation, admitted to five charges related to alcohol overages and attempting to mislead the BHA about travels and circumvent quarantine in September of 2020.

Fallon, the son of six-time champion jockey Kieren Fallon, won his first Royal Ascot contest last summer aboard the Roger Teal-trained Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) in the G1 King's Stand S. He won the G1 July Cup on the same horse in 2020.

Qatar Racing issued a statement on Thursday that read, “Qatar Racing respects the findings of the BHA independent judicial panel. This period will provide Oisin with further time to continue his rehabilitation which Qatar Racing fully supports. We, and the whole sport, look forward to him returning to the racecourse. In the meantime, Oisin will remain on the Qatar Racing team and Cieren Fallon will take over and ride as Qatar Racing's first jockey until Oisin returns.”

Weighing Room Covid Test Requirement Waived

British racing has dropped mandatory Covid-19 testing for weighing room entry effective Thursday, following the change to self-isolation rules in England. Access to the weighing room will continue to be restricted to essential personnel.

British Horseracing Authority Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Jerry Hill said, “Throughout the pandemic, we have endeavoured to make evidence-based decisions that protect our people and safeguard the industry against Covid-19-related disruption. In recent months, testing for weighing room personnel has been a crucial part of this strategy and I'd again like to thank everyone for their continued patience and cooperation. Changes to self-isolation rules, together with promising signs in infection data, enable us to bring forward an end to mandatory testing, although testing on a voluntary basis is still recommended. As emphasised previously, Covid-19 still exists, so please continue to do what you can to reduce your own risk and prioritise the health and livelihood of others.”

Palmer To Leave Newmarket For Cheshire

Classic-winning trainer Hugo Palmer is to succeed Tom Dascombe at Michael Owen's Manor House Stables in Cheshire.

Confirming the news on Twitter on Thursday, Owen said, “I am absolutely thrilled to announce that multiple Group 1 and Classic-winning trainer, Hugo Palmer, is to join Manor House Stables as our trainer and will be taking up his appointment in readiness for the new season.

“Hugo's CV is there for all to see and it's a huge coup for the area to welcome one of the country's leading trainers. MHS has made giant strides both on and off the track since we opened our doors 17 years ago and I look forward to furthering that success with Hugo in the years to come.”

Palmer, who started training in Newmarket from Kremlin Cottage Stables in 2011, quickly rose to prominence when saddling Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) to win the Irish Oaks and G1 Prix de l'Opera in 2015. The following season saw him land his first British Classic when Galileo Gold (GB) won the 2000 Guineas for Al Shaqab Racing. The son of Paco Boy (Ire) went on to finish runner-up in the Irish 2000 Guineas and win the St James's Palace S. and is now standing at Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland. Palmer also trained Galileo Gold's first Group 1 winner last season, Ebro River (Ire), himself now a Classic contender for this year along with Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was runner-up to Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G1 Darley Dewhurst S.
