Promising Pletcher Trainee Emmanuel Tops Oversubscribed Fountain Of Youth Stakes

WinStar Farm LLC and Siena Farm LLC's Emmanuel concedes experience to his rivals Saturday, when he is scheduled to make his stakes debut in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) in only his third career start. The race will be held over 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Emmanuel has been quite impressive in romping to victory in his first two starts, but the nagging question facing bettors will be: Does the 3-year-old son of More Than Ready have the stuff to prevail over his more seasoned competition in the prep for the April 2 $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1)?

The 76th running of the Fountain of Youth will be featured in a mega promotion between Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita, which will host 15 stakes (14 graded stakes) between them on Saturday. The Coast to Coast All Dirt Stakes Pick 5 and Coast to Coast All Turf Stakes Pick 5, multi-race wagers with a $1 minimum and a low 12-percent takeout, will be on the cross-track wagering menu. There will also be a free contest with a chance to win a $5 million jackpot for picking the winners of all 15 stakes that will be run at that day at the 1/ST sister tracks.

The Fountain of Youth offers the winner 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Emmanuel's lack of race experience will hardly discourage handicappers familiar with Pletcher's past performances with lightly raced horses at Gulfstream. The Hall of Famer saddled Itsaknockout for a 2015 Fountain of Youth victory in his third career start following a pair of victories at Gulfstream.

Pletcher has had even better success with colts making their third career starts in the Florida Derby. Among his record six winners of Gulfstream's premier Triple Crown prep are two colts who were victorious in their third career starts – Constitution in 2014 and Materiality in 2015, both of whom went into their graded-stakes debuts undefeated.

Emmanuel's sire captured his first five career starts, including two graded stakes, before tasting defeat for the first time.

“They're both talented horses. Emmanuel has a bit of a larger physical presence than a lot of the More Than Readys we've had. He's a good-sized, strong colt with a really good More Than Ready disposition,” Pletcher said. “He's a very straightforward, very professional, smart colt.”

Emmanuel, 9-2 in the morning-line, made an auspicious debut Dec. 11 at Gulfstream, scoring a front-running 6 ¾-length triumph in a mile maiden special weight event. In his two-turn debut in a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Tampa Bay Downs Jan. 30, he scored a gate-to-wire victory by 4 ½ lengths. While Emmanuel has been successful at both Gulfstream and Tampa, Pletcher opted for the Hallandale Beach track for his colt's stakes debut.

“He broke his maiden here. We know he likes the track,” said Pletcher, who also won the Fountain of Youth with Eskendereya in 2010 and Scat Daddy in 2007. “We like the timing of the Fountain of Youth. It puts him in a good position, if he runs well enough, to take a look at the Florida Derby.”

Pletcher also entered Donegal Racing's Mo Donegal in the Fountain of Youth.

Mo Donegal, 3-1 in the morning line, brings a stronger body of work into the Fountain of Youth than his Pletcher stablemate. The son of Uncle Mo is coming off a late-surging third-place finish in the Feb. 5 Holy Bull (G3) in his 3-year-old debut, after finishing off his 2021 campaign with a victory in the 1 1/8-mile Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct Dec. 4.

“It was just a matter of deciding if a race between now and the Wood Memorial is going to move him forward,” Pletcher said. “The goal is to have him peak on Kentucky Derby Day.”

Mo Donegal has raced off the early pace in all four of his races.

“There could be a fast pace, which wouldn't hurt his running style,” Pletcher said.

Luis Saez has the mount aboard Emmanuel, while Irad Ortiz Jr. has the return mount aboard Mo Donegal.

Lucky Seven Stable's Rattle N Roll brings Grade 1 credentials into the Fountain of Youth, in which he is scheduled to make his 2022 debut after closing out his juvenile campaign with an off-the-pace 4 ½-length victory in the Oct. 9 Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland.

“He's a beautiful horse to be around. He's a bit of a set-up horse,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “He needs pace in front of him. That's out of our control, but we're looking to get two races into him before Kentucky and go from there.”

Brian Hernandez Jr. will travel from New Orleans to accept the return mount aboard the son of Connect.

Tami Bobo's Simplification enters the Fountain of Youth off a gritty second-place finish behind White Abarrio in the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull, in which he had a troubled start and experienced a wide trip.

“The bad news in his last race, he didn't win. The good news, we know he can run from behind and run in the front,” trainer Antonio Sano said.

Simplification had previously scored a front-running victory in the Mucho Macho Man over a one-turn mile.

“Each day, he is a more serious horse. Maybe before he was a little green, but right now, he has more concentration,” Sano said. “He's a different horse of all the horses I have.”

Jose Ortiz is scheduled to ride Simplification for the first time Saturday.

Gentry Farms' A.P.'s Secret is scheduled to make his stakes debut in the Fountain of Youth after winning two of three starts.

“We're exited to run him. He's a good horse. We believe he is a high-quality colt,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “This race is coming up competitive, so this is his chance to show if he belongs or not.”

The son of Cupid, who more recently scored a front-running victory in a one-turn mile optional claiming allowance while wearing blinkers for the first time, will make his debut Saturday.

Two turns “We feel that's what he wants to do, but he still has to prove it,” Joseph said. “I think he's a horse that can sit off the pace and not have to be rushed.”

Tyler Gaffalione has the call on A.P.'s Secret.

Albaugh Family Stable LLC's Howling Time will seek to rebound from his first career loss in the Nov. 27 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs, where he finished fifth behind Smile Happy, Sam F. Davis (G3) winner Classic Causeway and Holy Bull victor White Abarrio after setting a pressured pace.

“He came out of the one-hole and Joe (Talamo) asked him a little bit and he got aggressive,” Romans said. “We won't expect to see him on the pace this time. There's a lot of speed in there. We'll just sit off it and come running.”

Howling Time had previously broken his maiden and won the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill.

Romans is also scheduled to saddle West Point Thoroughbreds and Albaugh Family Stable's Giant Game, a son of Giant's Causeway who finished third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) before finishing sixth in the Holy Bull.

Joe Talamo has the return mount aboard Howling Time, while Corey Lanerie is scheduled to ride Giant Game for the first time.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott is also represented by two colts in the entries for the Fountain of Youth – LRE Racing LLC and JEH Racing Stable LLC's High Oak and OXO Equine LLC's Galt. Galt is on the also-eligible list of one and will need a defection in the main body of the 12-horse field to draw into the race.

High Oak is scheduled to make his first start since finishing fourth in the Sept. 6 Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga. The son of Gormley has won his two previous starts, including the Saratoga Special (G2). Galt, an impressive maiden winner in his third career start Dec. 26 at Gulfstream, set the pace before fading to fourth in the Holy Bull.

Junior Alvarado has the return mount aboard High Oak, while Joel Rosario has the call on Galt.

Santa Rosa Racing Stable's Markhamian, who captured the seven-furlong Pasco at Tampa Bay Downs; Edge Racing's In Due Time, an impressive optional claiming allowance winner Feb. 4; Stonehedge LLC's Dean Delivers, a close-up second in the seven-furlong Swale on the Holy Bull undercard; and OGMA Investments and Jack Hardin Jr.'s O Captain, who finished third in the six-furlong Limehouse after breaking his maiden impressively; are also entered in the Fountain of Youth.

Forbidden Kingdom, Doppelganger Renew Rivalry In San Felipe

Forbidden Kingdom and Doppelganger, who finished 2 ¾ lengths apart at seven furlongs on Jan. 29, will renew acquaintances at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday as they head the 83rd running of the Grade 2, $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

The San Felipe offers 50 points to the winner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, excluding those horses trained by Bob Baffert due to Churchill Downs' ban of the Hall of Fame conditioner.

An ultra-quick chestnut colt by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, the Richard Mandella-trained Forbidden Kingdom sped to the early lead from his rail post position and dominated the G2 San Vicente Stakes on Jan. 29, winning by 2 ¼ lengths while the Bob Baffert-conditioned Doppelganger checked in fourth as the 4-5 favorite.

Owned by MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm, LLC, Forbidden Kingdom, who earned a lofty 94 Beyer Speed Figure in taking the Jan. 29 San Vicente, is out of the Five Star Day mare Just Louise. With two wins, a second and a third from four starts, Forbidden Kingdom, who was purchased for $300,000 as a yearling, has earnings of $194,000 and will be ridden for the fifth consecutive time by Juan Hernandez.

“He's as quick as they come,” said Mandella following the San Vicente. “We'll have to try two turns down the road here. He's gotten better about everything. He was so professional today, everything went well. He used to get a little antsy in the gate.”

A 3 ½ length first-out maiden winner going six furlongs at Los Alamitos on Dec. 11, Doppelganger was subsequently off as the heavy favorite in the San Vicente and although he found his best stride in deep stretch he couldn't make up the necessary ground to threaten for the win while earning an 89 Beyer.

Although he disappointed in his second start, Doppelganger, a bay colt by red-hot sire Into Mischief, has come back to train in superb fashion for Baffert and should relish the added distance on Saturday. Owned by SF Racing, LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC, et al, Doppelganger is out of the Quiet American mare Twice the Lady and should he win, would provide Baffert with his record sixth San Felipe win.

Cast as the “Other Baffert,” Armagnac has the advantage of breaking his maiden at the San Felipe distance. Off at 4-5 in what was his second start, Armagnac led gate to wire here on Jan. 21, winning easily by 2 ¼ lengths. A $210,000 Keeneland September Yearling, he's owned by SF Racing, LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC, et al. By Quality Road out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Kitty Wine, Armagnac looms dangerous in what will be his third start.

Versatile and battle-tested, the George Papaprodromou-trained Cabo Spirit has proven effective on both turf and dirt. Second, beaten 15 lengths by Baffert's A-List sophomore Messier in the G3 Robert B. Lewis at the San Felipe distance Feb. 6, Cabo Spirit, a winner of the one mile turf Eddie Logan Stakes two starts back on Jan. 2, has an overall mark of 8-2-2-2 with earnings of $177,220.

Owned by Kretz Racing, LLC, Cabo Spirit, who was purchased out of a 2-year-old in training sale last April, is by Pioneerof the Nile and is out of the Shamardal mare Fancy Day.

Ironicus Sold To Stand In Uruguay

Ironicus, a Grade 2 winner and sire of 2021 Kentucky Derby runner Helium, has been sold to stand at Haras Don Carlos in Uruguay, according to Uruguayan reporter Antonio Pato Castro.

The 11-year-old son of Distorted Humor previously stood at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., where he entered stud in 2017.

Ironicus has sired three crops of racing age, with 12 winners and combined progeny earnings of $832,395.

His leading runner has been Helium, who won the listed Display Stakes at Woodbine as a juvenile, and came back at three to win the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby, en route to crossing the finish eighth in last year's Kentucky Derby. Helium also earned placings in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes and the non-graded War Chant Stakes at Churchill Downs, and the Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Charles Town.

A homebred for Stuart Janney III, and trained by Shug McGaughey, Ironicus won six of 18 career starts for earnings of $1,148,790.

He set a new course record at Saratoga Race Course for 1 1/16 miles over the turf in the G2 Bernard Baruch Stakes, and he notched additional graded victories in the G2 Dixie Stakes and G3 Fort Marcy Stakes. He was also second in a pair of Grade 1 races on the turf.

Ironicus is out of the stakes-placed A.P. Indy mare Meghan's Joy, making him a half-brother to notable runners including Grade 2 winners Norumbega and On Leave, and Grade 3 winners Hunting and Quiet Harbor. His extended family includes Grade 1 winner Eastern Echo and Grade 2 winners Yell and Roar.

Kentucky: Koenig Introduces Bills To Legalize Sports Wagering, Alter Pari-Mutuel Tax Rates, Breakage

Kentucky State Representative Adam Koenig (R-Erlanger) introduced four new wagering bills at a Monday press conference, including one that would legalize sports wagering in the state, according to the Courier-Journal.

Sports wagering would be legalized at Kentucky horse racing tracks and at the Kentucky Speedway, as well as on a mobile app. Koenig pushed a similar bill in 2020, estimated to bring in $22.5 million in annual revenue for the state, but it died without receiving a vote in the House. The difference in this new bill is that the mobile app could be downloaded anywhere, rather than restricting sports wagering to racetracks.

Another bill seeks to alter the tax structure on horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering, without changing the rates on Historical Horse Racing machines that have become popular in the state. Koenig said the rates in the bill would “make Kentucky the most attractive place for horse players to come and bet all across North America.”

Under the bill, all pari-mutuel betting would be taxed at 1.5 percent, the same as HHR wagering, and altering the breakage system for betting payouts – to the exact penny instead of rounding down by every 20 cents. Koenig estimates the changes would increase state revenue by an annual $20 million after the first few years.

Also included in the bill package is a ban on “gray machines,” games resembling slots that are popular in convenience stores in Kentucky, as well as a new problem gaming trust fund to help people with gambling addiction.

Koenig hopes to pass all four bills during the House Bill 610 omnibus bill.
