Romantic Warrior Shoots For Six Straight In Classic Cup

European-sourced Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) has answered every question that has been asked of him in his five racetrack appearances to date and will look to keep the ball rolling as the horse to beat in Sunday's HK$12-million Hong Kong Classic Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse.

A 300,000gns purchase by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at Tattersalls October in 2019 and later re-sold for HK$4.8 million at the unique Hong Kong International Sale, Romantic Warrior annexed his first three starts, each over six furlongs, and proved easily best when trying 1400 metres for the first time Jan. 16. The third choice for the Hong Kong Classic Mile a fortnight later, the bay worked out a good trip with Karis Teetan aboard for the first time and ran past long-time leader California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) for a half-length tally. He'll need to negotiate another 200 metres this time, but he has the full confidence of his jockey.

“Of course, it is in the back of our minds that he is stepping up in distance again but he's a progressive horse–I galloped him on Saturday [19 February] and he went really well, he is in good shape and I think the distance will be ok, because he can relax and he has a nice turn of foot,” the Mauritian said.

California Spangle was tasting defeat for just the second time in the Classic Mile, just failing to last after setting a decent pace. Matthew Chadwick was in the irons on the final Sunday of January, but Zac Purton–who is back on top of the jockeys' premiership–takes over this time around for trainer Tony Cruz.

The Irishman (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) tracked Romantic Warrior through in the Classic Mile and stayed on well enough to be third, with longshot Turin Redstar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a further 1 3/4 lengths back in fourth. Twice placed at group level in Australia, the bay is bred on the cross over Zabeel (NZ) responsible for former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (NZ) and should have no queries where it comes to this trip and beyond.

Senor Toba (Aus) (Toronado {Ire}) has acquitted himself nicely in the deep Class 2 waters locally, having finished third going a mile on International Day Dec. 12 before scoring over the Derby distance of 2000 metres Dec. 27. He was scratched lame out of an intended start Feb. 3, but whatever he does here should bring him on for the BMW Hong Kong Derby in a month's time.

Queen Of The Desert? Popular Princess Zoe Gives Small Stable A Big Chance

From training a very small string of horses in the shadows of leafy Gowran Park racecourse in County Kilkenny, Tony Mullins has found himself in the desert environs of Riyadh where his stable star Princess Zoe (GER) contests the Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap.

The Mullins family are a racing dynasty in Ireland with their roots firmly in jump racing, and while the initial expectation may have been for Princess Zoe to go jumping, that plan most certainly changed as she rocketed up through the ranks of Flat racing's staying division.

For Mullins, the entire experience has been slightly surreal but one he has very much embraced as Princess Zoe's progress and preparations are constantly charted on his Twitter account.

“I know how much I love her but I just can't believe how popular she is with everybody else,” Mullins says of the Jukebox Jury-sired 7-year-old's adoring supporters from far and wide.

The journey has involved Mullins winning a Group 1 – the 2020 Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp – with Princess Zoe, and only just being denied a second by the best stayer in the world at the time, Subjectivist, in last June's Ascot Gold Cup.

It was that run at Royal Ascot on fast ground that told Mullins he had a mare who could literally travel around the world, as his fears of her not being able to act as well on a quicker surface were allayed by her wellbeing immediately after the race.

Now in Riyadh, Princess Zoe's story continues, and Mullins is almost pinching himself.

“For a stable like ours to have a star like this who keeps doing it for us… I think it might take Shakespeare to put it into words properly. It's just unbelievable.”

And Mullins is not in Saudi Arabia just to make up the numbers. Her last run in the 2021 Prix du Cadran didn't finish as connections would have hoped, but there was plenty of encouragement to take from so much of the race.

“Going to the Prix du Cadran last year, the day she was fifth, that is when she was at her best,” Mullins reflects. “She came down to the last bend that day on the bridle and I was so disappointed after the race because everything had gone perfectly until we got to that last bend.

“She did come home a little lame and we believe that something happened on the last bend. If she runs like she was training going into the Cadran, and her run in the Ascot Gold Cup obviously, we have a real live chance and that is very exciting for us.”

Mullins, who trains no more than a dozen horses, often calls on his brother Willie, Ireland's record-breaking perennial champion jumps trainer, to allow him to gallop Princess Zoe with some of his high-class string, and it's a system that works.

He says: “It can be a little awkward when I want to give Princess Zoe some work as we don't have the horses to work with her, but I often bring her to Willie's and we are able to work it out. It does work and if anyone was to give me another one like her we'd be able to work that out too!”

At home in Ireland, Mullins is part of racing folklore through his association with Dawn Run, a famous mare trained by his father, Paddy, who won both the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Mullins partnered Dawn Run to 15 of her 21 victories, but the pressure of overseeing Princess Zoe's campaign trumps that of riding Ireland's most famous mare.

“The responsibility was my father's that time and I just had to sit up on Dawn Run, and I was always confident about that,” Mullins says.

“Now with my first real really good horse on the world stage I am nervous about this. It is a huge responsibility to get everything right and I'd rather be the jockey,” he jokes.

If Princess Zoe wins the prize on Saturday, even Shakespeare might struggle to capture this story in full.

Buick Off Saudi Cup Mounts After Covid Positive

Godolphin jockey William Buick, who was slated to ride the Jan. 21 G2 Al Fahidi Fort hero Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 1351 Turf Sprint on the Saturday of the Saudi Cup meeting, has tested positive for Covid and will be off his mounts in Riyadh on Saturday. Also due to ride Siskany (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Longines Red Sea Turf H., Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) in the G3 Saudi Derby and Copano Kicking (Spring At Last) in the G3 Riyadh Cup Sprint, Buick missed several rides at Meydan on Friday, as well. In Friday's G3 Dubai Millennium S., Buick had been booked for Star Safari (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), but Andrea Atzeni finished second aboard the Godolphin runner instead.

For his Saudi Cup mounts, James Doyle will deputise for Buick on Naval Crown and Siskany, while Frankie Dettori has been called up to ride Noble Truth. In place of Doyle on Happy Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the 1351 Cup Sprint is David Egan. The regular rider of 2021 Saudi Cup victor Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), Egan also picks up the ride on Copano Kicking for Buick in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint.

Ginobili (Munnings) will be forced to miss the Sprint after emerging from his second gallop at King Abdulaziz unsatisfactorily. Trainer Richard Baltas told Daily Racing Form that the 5-year-old was lame in his left for, but that the first set of X-rays taken were negative. Results of a second set of images were pending and Baltas surmised that Ginobili would undergo a nuclear scan upon his return to America.
