Fasig-Tipton’s Winter Sale Delayed Due to Weather

The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale, originally scheduled next Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 7-8, will be pushed back to Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 8-9. An ice storm is forecasted for the Lexington area, prompting Fasig-Tipton officials to delay the sale.

“Our area is currently under an ice storm warning from tomorrow morning through Friday morning, and in the interests of safety we have decided to push the sale back by one day,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning on Wedneday. “This will ensure that horses and sale participants will have ample time to arrive on the sales grounds and begin inspections when conditions are safe to do so.”

Both sessions will begin at 10 a.m. on their respective days. Hips 1-300 will now be offered Tuesday, while Hips 301 through the supplement (currently up to Hip 606), will be offered Wednesday.

Time Test Leads Goffs Online Breeding Rights Catalogue

An online sale of three stallion breeding rights, in Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus]), was announced by Goffs on Wednesday. Bidding opens on the timed sale after the last mare is sold during the Goffs February Sale on Thursday, Feb. 10, and closes at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. Entries are still being accepted by Goffs. The leading first-season sire by black-type winners, Time Test has sired the Group 1-placed Sunset Shiraz (Ire) and the Group 3 winners Romantic Time (GB) and Rocchigiani (GB), as well as the listed duo of Tardis (GB) and The King's Horses (GB). He stands for £15,000 at The National Stud this year.

Darley's Territories sired pricy auction purchase Rougir (Fr), who won the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines last year and also counts the group placed Masseto (GB) and Rhoscolyn (GB) among his progeny. He commands £10,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

Tops for first-season sires with winners (35) in 2021, Cotai Glory counts G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Atomic Force (Ire) among his best runners. The chestnut, who stands at Tally-Ho Stud for €8,500 this season, also has sired the group placed Pearl Glory (Ire), Eldrickjones (Ire) and the listed winner Purciaretta (Ire).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Goffs Online was first introduced to the market in 2020 and since its inception it has proven a market leading platform. We have used it to aid our live auctions on both sides of the Irish Sea as well as hosting timed online sales which has seen it sell horses up to £300,000.

Owners Head To Dubai To Cheer On Hot Rod Charlie In His Meydan Debut

Hot Rod Charlie will make his highly-anticipated UAE debut on Friday at Meydan Racecourse.

Voted the winner of the Vox Populi Award for 2021 by US racing fans, the Doug O'Neill-trained 4-year-old is the headline act in G2 Maktoum Challenge R2 [Presented by The Longines Record], the feature on Friday's seven-race card.

Third in the Kentucky Derby, second in the Belmont and the winner of the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby, Hot Rod Charlie warmed up for his Dubai travels with a close second, beaten a nose, in the G2 San Vincente Stakes at Santa Anita, California, on Dec. 26.

He'll have a strong supporting party to cheer him on, with Patrick O'Neill of part-owners Boat Racing in town, as well as another co-owner, Bill Strauss.

“We sat down after the Breeders' Cup meeting in November and made a plan for the horse,” said Strauss. “We decided to target Dubai and then the best way of getting to the Dubai World Cup, which was to bring him here and give him a race over the track.”

Hot Rod Charlie faces stiff opposition in the feature, with emphatic local debut winner Everfast in for Doug Watson.

“We weren't sure where to go with him [after his local debut win in December],” said Watson. “We were thinking this race or the Firebreak, but then [owner] Frankie O'Connor came into town and that helped make up our minds.

“He was second in the Preakness over this trip, so I don't think it will be a problem.”

The other Group 2 on the card is the Balanchine [Presented by Longines Evidenza] for fillies and mares on turf, over 1800 meters (9 furlongs). It sees the French-trained Pevensey Bay bidding to follow up her victory in the Cape Verdi (G2) over 200metres shorter last time out. Waiting for her in the race is Charlie Appleby's Creative Flair, who was last seen finishing fourth in the Jockey Club Oaks in New York in September.

“She has always had the Balanchine as her long-term target,” said the handler, who has won the last two editions of this race with Summer Romance and Magic Lily. “Her preparation has gone well.”

The third Thoroughbred race on the card is the G3 Firebreak Stakes [Presented by Longines Conquest] over 1600 meters (one mile) on dirt, which was won in 2021 by subsequent G2 Godolphin Mile winner Secret Ambition. It has a field of eight, with Bhupat Seemar's Tuz aiming to make it two from two this season, having won the Listed Dubai Creek Mile in December. Watson sends out Prince Eiji, an eye-catching short-head second to Kafoo on his local debut and first on dirt.

“We were thrilled and disappointed with his first run here,” said Watson of the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Obaid Al Maktoum-owned 6-year-old. “He got a little leg-weary with it being his first try on dirt, but it still took a good one to beat him and it's always been the plan to run here.”

Godolphin are having another excellent Carnival and they are loaded in the turf races, in particular. Appleby's Listed winner New Science takes on Jumeirah Derby Trial winner Island Falcon in the Listed Jumeirah Classic [Presented by Longines Elegant] and the handler also runs Sovereign Prince, a winner here three weeks ago when he beat the re-opposing Sed Maarib.

Appleby has had the Carnival as the target for several months for New Science and said: “His form from the UK is rock solid but he was quick to be earmarked for a Dubai campaign and his preparation has gone well. [After this race] he'll head back to the UK for one of the Guineas Trials.”

The 3-year-olds also line up on dirt in the Al Bastakiya Trial [Presented by Longines St Imier] over 1900 meters (1 3/16 miles), in which the Watson-trained Violent Justice looks of interest following his emphatic Jebel Ali maiden win. Earlier on, a select field of six has been declared for the Oud Metha Stakes [Presented by Longines Master Collection] over 1200 meters (6 furlongs) on dirt. Leading the charge there is Rudy Trigger, a winner of three of his five starts in Argentina for trainer Maria Munoz.

The evening's action begins at 6pm with the G1 Maktoum Challenge R1 [Presented by Longines Dolce Vita] for Purebred Arabians, over 1900 meters. It welcomes back last year's winner, RB Frynchh Dude, as well as another Group 1 winner, Brraq.

First Foals Arrive For King For A Day, Lookin At Lee

Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions welcomed the first foals for young stallions King for a Day and Lookin At Lee last month in New York.

King for a Day, set to stand his second season for $5,000, was represented by his first foal when the Elusive Charlie mare Leoness delivered a filly at Irish Hill Century Farm in Stillwater, N.Y. Bred by Steve Sinatra, the filly is the second foal out of Leoness, who also produced a Maryland-bred colt by Desert Party bred by Sinatra Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding LLC in 2020.

King for a Day, the only horse to beat eventual champion 3-year-old male Maximum Security to the wire in 2019, won three of seven starts and earned $260,550 for owner and breeder Stephen P. Brunetti's Red Oak Stable and Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

The 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo out of the unraced French Deputy mare Ubetwereven won the Sir Barton Stakes on the Preakness Day undercard at Pimlico Race Course in his sophomore debut before topping Maximum Security in the $150,000 TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Multiple stakes winner and 2017 Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee, set to stand his second season for $4,000, was represented by his first foal when the Dixie Union mare Rose Sayer produced a colt at breeder Hank Freebern's Rocky Top Acres in Hudson Falls, N.Y.

The newborn colt is a half-brother to a New York-bred yearling filly by Frank Conversation also bred by Henry Freebern, Lance Freebern and Tim Hurlock and the unraced 3-year-old New York-bred Honorable Dillon filly Mo Don't Lie bred by Henry Freebern and Lance Freebern. She is also the dam of four other foals who made it to the races.

Lookin At Lee, a 7-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky out of the Grade 3-placed Langfuhr mare Capilano, compiled a record of 4-6-5 from 35 starts and earned $1,343,188 during his career with Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and owners L and N Racing LLC.

In addition to his Derby effort, Lookin At Lee was a stakes winner and Grade 1-placed runner at 2, finished fourth in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes and was multiple graded stakes-placed at three and a stakes winner at four.
