Secret Oath Stings Rivals in Honeybee

Briland Farm homebred Secret Oath (Arrogate) laid down yet another marker on her march toward the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, streaking clear of her foes for a fluent 7 1/2-length romp in Saturday's GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Park.

Prohibitively favored, with GII Golden Rod S. runner-up Yuugiri (Shackleford) the only other one the bettors wanted, Secret Oath had to be re-balanced after breaking a bit inward at the start and was a joint-last into the clubhouse turn as Optionality (Gun Runner) and Yuugiri matched motors up front. A fraction keen and racing with her mouth open as they reached the backstretch, the chalk settled better approaching the three-eighths pole, but was hemmed in for several strides as Ice Orchid (Super Saver)rolled up three wide to enter the fray. With Optionality beginning to retreat at the fence, Luis Contreras grabbed hold of Secret Oath, guided her around her weakening foe, shot through an opening at the inside left by Yuugiri and widened under a left-handed stick to crush.

“I got a great break and good position,” Contreras reported. “I just sat right behind and at [the three-eighths pole], she tried to pull me again. I just waited and waited. My thinking was to go outside, but I had another horse right there, so I stayed a little longer. When I saw the rail open and asked her to go, she made a tremendous move.”

For his part, Lukas was not ruling out swinging for the fences over the coming weeks.

“She's nominated here [GI Arkansas Derby] and the [GI] Kentucky Derby,” he said. “You know what's really good here? The thing that I'm most happy about is that [Oaklawn] has changed [the date of the Arkansas Derby] from [three] weeks in front of the Kentucky Derby to five. Boy, if you're training a good filly, that's another little caveat that I like. I like it if I have a colt. I like that five-week break. But if you have a filly, you'd have to say, 'Wow!' You're going to get a little extra time.”

A 5 1/2-length maiden winner at second asking while trying two turns for the first time at Churchill on Halloween, Secret Oath was only fifth in the Nov. 27 Golden Rod, but atoned in no uncertain terms with an 8 1/4-length allowance romp going the short-stretch mile at this venue Dec. 31. Sent off at 1-2 in the Jan. 29 Martha Washington S., she had better than seven lengths on Optionality on the wire and was similarly dominant Saturday.

Pedigree Notes:

The first graded winner for the late Arrogate, Secret Oath is one of three winners from four to the races for her dam–also trained by Hall of Famer Wayne Lukas–to a half-dozen victories from 35 career starts. Five of Absinthe Minded's career tallies came over this track, including the 2011 and 2012 runnings of the Bayakoa S., the 2012 Pippin S. and top-three finishes in the GI Apple Blossom H. Secret Oath has an unnamed 2-year-old half-sister by Medaglia d'Oro and Absinthe Minded is expecting a foal by Unbridled's Song's son Liam's Map this season.

Japan Runners, Lemaire Dominate Saudi Cup Card

Japan-based runners ridden by Christophe Lemaire dominated racing at King Abdulaziz Racecourse Feb. 26, capped by Dancing Prince's facile victory in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint Presented by Saudia (G3) while notching an unprecedented fourth victory for his home country at the Saudi Cup meeting.

The Keisuke Miyata-trained six-year-old by Pas De Trois had the run of the race after bursting from the gates to claim the lead. Setting quick early fractions, he maintained his advantage and galloped into the straight with Good Effort in hot pursuit but ultimately settling for second as Dancing Prince surged further clear in the closing stages to win by 5 Âľ lengths.

The winner of his only two starts in Japan in the last 12 months, including the Capella Stakes (G3) in December, the consistent Dancing Prince has now won nine of his 13 lifetime starts.

Adding to Japan's incredible night in Riyadh, Chain Of Love, trained by Michihiro Ogasa, ran on well to take third, 3 3/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

“This is unbelievable,” Lemaire said. “I knew this was a very good horse and it's easy when you are riding good horses. I have been in Japan for two years with the restrictions and no travel, so I was fresh tonight! My horses were just too good tonight. I don't know what to say.”

Other Japan-based winners on the card to score wins with Lemaire were Authority in the Neom Turf Cup Presented by Jahez (G3), Songline in the Turf Sprint Presented by stc (G3), and Stay Foolish in the Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap (G3).

Letruska Easy Winner in Royal Delta

When last seen at the races as the 17-10 favorite in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff in early November, Letruska (Super Saver) had absolutely nothing go her way, as she attended a suicidal pace and unsurprisingly folded, beating just one rival home. Having since been rewarded with the Eclipse Award for her total body of work in 2021, the St. George homebred returned to action in Saturday's GIII Royal Delta S. and made very light work of five grossly overmatched rivals.

Kicked straight into the lead by Jose Ortiz, Letruska crossed down onto the rail and relaxed nicely on the engine through an opening quarter-mile that was clocked in a comfortable :24.39. Able to ration her speed evenly through the middle furlongs, Letruska was confidently handled around the turn as she continued to build an imposing advantage and glided home ears-pricked and never out of a high gallop to get back to her winning ways.

Letruska became a household name with a battling defeat of multiple champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in last year's GI Apple Blossom H. and she promptly added front-running tallies in the GI Ogden Phipps S. and GII Fleur de Lis S. A game half-length winner of the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga last August, the bay led them on a merry chase in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Oct. 10, but attended the wicked early fractions in the Distaff and hung around to the top of the lane before hoisting the white flag. A return trip to Hot Springs for the Apple Blossom is in the cards, trainer Fausto Gutierrez said following the victory.

Pedigree Notes:

Letruska's dam, third for Cobra Farm and Stan Hough in the 2009 GII Adirondack S., is a full-sister to GI Del Mar Futurity winner J P's Gusto and was purchased by St. George Farm for $100,000 carrying the filly that would become Letruska at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale. Magic Appeal is also the dam of the once-raced Ocotzingo (Hard Spun), the 2-year-old colt Prudencio (Arrogate) and a yearling filly by Malibu Moon. She was most recently covered by Curlin.
