Aqueduct: Withers Card Features Double Pick 6 Carryover Of $98,633

Saturday's nine-race card at Aqueduct Racetrack will be bolstered by a double Pick 6 carryover of $98,633 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Friday.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $22,500.50 to those who selected 5-of-6 horses correctly.

Friday's sequence began in Race 4 with Pendolino [No. 8, $81.50] upsetting a one-turn mile claiming event for older fillies and mares as the longest shot on the board. Oscar Gomez engineered the upset for owner-trainer Eduardo Jones.

Write the Check [No. 1A, $22.80] surged to victory under Luis Rodriguez Castro for trainer Bruce Brown in Race 5, a one-turn mile maiden claiming event for state-bred sophomore fillies.

The parade of longshots continued in Race 6 with Forty Two Ace [No. 6, $30.20] splashing to victory in a one-mile starter allowance for older horses under Mike Luzzi for owner-trainer Charlton Baker and was followed by Gallina [No. 7, $12] rallying to win a starter allowance for older fillies and mares in Race 7 for Trevor McCarthy and owner-trainer Jimmy Bond.

Mystic Night [No. 6, $5] won as the 3-2 mutuel favorite in Race 8, a nine-furlong allowance optional claimer for older horses with Manny Franco in the irons for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown.

With the double Pick 6 carryover already confirmed, Incontrovertible [No. 10, $12.20] closed out the sequence in Race 9 for jockey Carol Cedeno and trainer Edward Allard in the one-turn mile maiden claiming event for older state-bred fillies and mares.

Saturday's Pick 6 will kick off in Race 4 at 2:18 p.m. Eastern and includes the Grade 3, $250,000 Withers in Race 8. First post on the nine-race card is 12:50 p.m.

Observations: Son of Pleascach Debuts at Kempton

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Napravnik To Spearhead ‘New Vocations Day at the Races’

On Saturday, Feb. 12, retired jockey and horse advocate Rosie Napravnik will be on site at the Fair Grounds to spearhead the “New Vocations Day at the Races.” A four-time local riding champion who was instrumental in the opening of the New Vocations facility in Covington, Louisiana, Napravnik will join host Joe Kristufek on the live feed during the racing day to help build awareness, promote success stories and inspire donations for Thoroughbred aftercare.

“Before and after my riding career, I've been exposed to a lot of the other things that horses can do, and that's a big part of the reason why I'm so passionate about it and why it's so important to me,” Napravnik said in regards to Thoroughbred aftercare. “I have a lot of experience in the other disciplines and I've seen retired racehorses really excel. I got my first off-the-track Thoroughbred back in 2008 and watching him transform, his potential, his trainability, his eagerness to do something else and to learn new things and please really inspired me. After riding so many of those horses and seeing how much they put out for us on the racetrack, it's just something I can't avoid making a part of my life.”

In its first renewal at the Fair Grounds in 2021, a total of $8,198 was raced in unique donations from fans and people within the industry.

“Rosie is one of our favorites,” said Fair Grounds senior director of racing Jason Boulet. “It's great to have her back at the Fair Grounds to help shed light on such an important cause and to share her valuable insight with the fans. We look forward to building on last year's success.”

A Look At Seth Fishman’s Client Lists

The Paulick Report, along with other industry publications, has acquired copies of two documents presented during the recently-concluded trial of former veterinarian Dr. Seth Fishman which prosecutors say contain lists of clients from Fishman's Equestology business.

Fishman was convicted this week of two counts of conspiring to violate adulteration and misbranding laws and the manufacture of performance-enhancing drugs intended for use in racehorses.

The documents list clients by last name. One is limited to those with New York addresses. (Fishman's trial was held in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.) The other is alphabetized by last name and includes zip codes from a variety of states and a few Canadian postal codes. Street addresses and cities have been redacted, with zip code and state data remaining.

The list includes a number of people who were also indicted in March 2020 for their roles in what prosecutors say was a widespread network of drug suppliers, distributors and end users using adulterated and misbranded products to dope Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. Thomas Guido/Guido Stable, Ross Cohen, Carl Garofalo, Tony Poliseno, Rene Allard, and Richard Banca are all on the list.

Garofalo entered a guilty plea in June 2021 to one count of adulteration and misbranding and was ordered to forfeit $6.7 million. He has yet to be sentenced. The other defendants have pleaded not guilty.

A number of harness trainers and stable names appear on the list, as do the names of several veterinarians, and a few Thoroughbred racing connections.

Jeff Gural, owner of the Meadowlands, indicated to the Paulick Report he is making inquiries with each harness trainer on the list to find out what specifically they were purchasing from Fishman and when.

“Everyone told me I was wasting my time and money trying to clean [racing] up so I just assume everyone thought it was business as usual and there was no risk,” Gural wrote in an email. “Obviously, they were wrong.”

The dates on the lists indicate they were pulled in February 2020, but it's not clear whether they are limited to client accounts that were active or contained historical data. The lists also do not indicate what the clients were purchasing or whether they were the end users of the products. While prosecutors say Fishman was not actively practicing veterinary medicine, he was licensed as a vet and could have provided legitimate, legal treatments in addition to or instead of the illegal products he was found guilty of making and distributing.
