Yibir Caps Off Huge Eclipse Night for Godolphin

Godolphin homebred Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was part of trainer Charlie Appleby's incredible success with Transatlantic shippers in 2021, as he annexed the Jockey Club Derby Invitational S. before flying home late to take the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf against elder rivals. That was enough to lock up the champion turf male Eclipse on Thursday.

Essential Quality On Top in Contentious 3YO Category

Godolphin homebred Essential Quality (Tapit) was named an Eclipse Award champion for the second consecutive year, as last year's top juvenile male received champion 3-year-old male honors for a five-for-seven season that included victories in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S., GI Belmont S. and GI Runhappy Travers S. The Brad Cox trainee is starting his first year of stud duty at Darley.

Sophomore Jackie’s Warrior Tops All Male Sprinters

Just a $95,000 Keeneland September yearling buy by J. Kirk and Judy Robison, MGISW juvenile Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) found his home around one turn in 2021 and garnered champion male sprinter honors off of the strength of his complete body of work. His signature win came when out-dueling fellow superstar Life is Good (Into Mischief) in Saratoga's GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S., and he followed that up with a smashing success in the GI Gallant Bob S. at Parx for trainer Steve Asmussen. Jackie's Warrior, whose breeding rights were previously acquired by Spendthrift Farm, exited a sixth-place GI Breeders' Cup Sprint run at short odds with a knee chip but is expected to race on in 2022.

Corniche Goes From Sale Topper to Eclipse Winner

Corniche (Quality Road), the $1.5-million OBS April topper purchased by Peter Fluor and K.C. Weiner's Speedway Stables, ran away with the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November and took home the Eclipse Award for good measure Thursday. The Bob Baffert pupil justified his price tag and then some with a debut tally at Del Mar followed by the GI American Pharoah S. and a convincing front-running tally in the Breeders' Cup.
