Study: Iron Imitator Helps Wounds Heal

It can be difficult to get equine leg wounds to heal, especially when located on a high-motion joint. Additionally, the closer to the ground the wound is, the easier it becomes for dirt, mud and fecal matter to invade the wound. Wounds to the lower leg often develop excess scar tissue and granulation, as well.

A study team led by Dr. Shauna Lawless from the Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences investigated the potential use of gallium as an antimicrobial for wounds. Gallium maltolate is a semi-metallic element similar to iron; it can kill microbes that require iron.

The study used six Texas A&M horses, creating five 1-inch by 1-inch wounds on the side of the cannon bone of both front legs. Wounds on five of the horses were infected and treated with a 0.5 percent gallium maltolate and one horse was used as a control, with only petroleum jelly used on the wounds. The wounds were rebandaged twice weekly and treatment began on Day 10; biopsies were taken weekly.

Infection and biofilm formation was encouraged by placing gauze saturated with S. aureus on the wound for 48 hours. The research team found that infected wounds treated with gallium between two and four weeks after the wounding incident healed faster and had less proud flesh than the uninfected wounds.

Mating Plans: Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Farm

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Farm

INTO MYSTIC (m, 6, Into Mischief–Loveofalifetime, by Medaglia d'Oro), to be bred to Constitution

She's a multiple stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed maiden mare with earnings of $448,623, and will be bred to Constitution.

Constitution, purchased out of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale by Twin Creeks Racing and WinStar Farm, is loaded in the pipeline with a tremendous support from shareholders and elite breeders. He's poised to take the reins from his legendary sire Tapit.

MAY NIGHT (m, 19, Gulch–Riverjinsky, by Riverman), to be bred to Catholic Boy

May Night won the P. G. Johnson S. at Saratoga, and is a multiple stakes-producing mare including millionaire Red Rifle (Giant's Causeway) and Notte d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro).

Raced in partnership with Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables, Siena Farm and Twin Creeks Racing, Catholic Boy showed true brilliance on both turf and dirt surfaces. Catholic Boy is also by More Than Ready, one of the most respected sires in racing. We are looking forward to his first-crop yearlings in 2022.

WHISPER NUMBER (m, 14, First Samurai–Santerra, by Tejabo), to be bred to Constitution

She's a multiple graded-stakes producer and the dam of Ms Locust Point ($675,975, Dialed In) and Warrant ($649,700, Constitution). She's due to foal to Constitution, and will be bred back to him this year.

SHARP INSTINCT (m, 15, Awesome Again–Forty Paulina {Arg}, by Roar), to be bred to Independence Hall

Sharp Instinct is the dam of graded stakes winner Send It In ($501,914, Big Brown). She's due to foal to Twin Creeks-bred Tiz the Law, and will be going to WinStar's new recruit Independence Hall.

Independence Hall raced in partnership with Twin Creeks Racing, Bob Verratti and Eclipse Thoroughbreds, then was later joined by WinStar farm. The son of Constitution is a stunning physical that breeders are falling in love with. His athleticism should match up well with many different sire lines.

We are looking forward to [her] Tiz the Law foal as well. Tiz the Law was brilliant his entire racing career. Tiz the Law is known for his exceptional class, ability and he's by the exciting stallion Constitution.

BAFFLING (m, 7, Graydar–Baffled, by Distorted Humor), to be bred to Gun Runner

She's a Twin Creeks Farm homebred half-sister to Constitution, Jacaranda (Congrats), and Boynton (More Than Ready). By Graydar, who was campaigned by Twin Creeks Racing, she's due to foal to Not This Time.

Online Video Poker Games: Strategy For Fun

Some people that enjoy a good poker game at a buddies house on Saturday night also enjoy heading to a casino to play the game. A casino offers not only traditional poker games that are played at a table, but also offers video poker games. The biggest difference between table poker and video game poker is that the machine can be preset to have particular odds as to how often the player will win.

Of course, with a video poker game, there are buttons and virtual opponents as opposed to being able to hold your cards and look other players in the eye. The nice thing about video poker games, is that no matter what version of this popular pastime you enjoy the most, it is likely to be available. If you don’t happen to have a favorite, are new to the game or just don’t know all the rules, keep reading for some of the basics.

If you want to play five card stud on a video game, you will notice that the play is exactly the same as at the table. To start, every player is given a card with the face down as well as one card that is face up. The person that has the lowest card with the face up needs to make a bet of half of the minimum amount or a full bet to initiate the game. In a clockwise order players may either raise the opening bet, fold their cards, or call. Cards are dealt until each player has a total of five cards. Then the fourth card is dealt, and the lowest bet is raised to double the original bet. Finally, the fifth and final card is given to all the players face up, followed with the final round of betting.

In Caribbean Stud Poker, including on video poker games, each player wagers against the dealer and not against each other. To play, each person must pay an ante just to see their cards. Then, if allowed, players may bet one dollar to enter the jackpot. Five cards are then dealt face down to every person that is playing as well as to the dealer, except the dealer’s fifth card is dealt face up. The players now have two options to choose from: they may either place a bet equal or larger than the original ante, or as in any poker game they may fold and withdraw from the current hand, forfeiting their ante.

After all the players have either bet or folded, the dealer then reveals the cards in his or her hand. In order to challenge a player’s hand, the dealer’s hand needs to have either an Ace and a King or better; if no player has this combination, the dealer will fold his hand and the ante is the only amount paid out, with the player’s bets being returned to them. If the dealer has an Ace and a King or better then the player’s cards and the dealer’s cards are shown and the best hand wins the pot.
