‘Egregious Breach … Of Fundamental Responsibility’: Trainer Potts Under Scrutiny By NYRA

The New York Racing Association is gathering facts for a possible administrative hearing that could lead to the suspension of trainer Wayne Potts from participation or stabling at Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga racetracks.

The move comes after Potts received a 30-day suspension and $1,000 fine in New Jersey for allegedly directing assistant Bonnie Lucas not to allow the filly Chispita to be vanned off on an equine ambulance – as ordered by a regulatory veterinarian – after a second-place finish in a claiming race at Monmouth Park on Aug. 6, 2021.

A claim was submitted for Chispita in that race, but New Jersey Racing Commission rules state that a claim may be voided if a horse is vanned off. The claim was subsequently voided.

Lucas, also listed as the owner, received  a 30-day suspension as well as a $1,000 fine.

The 30-day ban is just the latest sanction against Potts, who was suspended 20 days in New York last year for violating claiming rules and also in 2021 received a 15-day suspension for a medication violation in New Jersey. In 2020, he was excluded by track management from participating at Maryland Jockey Club tracks for allegedly operating as a program trainer for Marcus Vitali, who was also banned by the MJC. In 2019, Potts was suspended in Delaware for non-payment of invoices from a veterinary firm. Three years before that, Potts was fined in Maryland for operating his racing stable without workers' compensation insurance for nearly seven months. It was only after an exercise rider was injured that it was discovered that the workers' comp policy had been cancelled.

“In just the last five months, Wayne Potts has been suspended by both the New York State Gaming Commission and the New Jersey Racing Commission due to conduct in direct violation of the rules of racing,” said Pat McKenna, vice president of communications for the New York Racing Association. “Most recently, Mr. Potts was proven to have jeopardized the health and safety of a horse by refusing to allow the horse to enter an equine ambulance as directed by a regulatory veterinarian. This is a particularly egregious breach of his most fundamental responsibility as a trainer – to ensure the well-being of horses under his care.

“NYRA has afforded Mr. Potts the privilege of stabling and racing at our venues, but this pattern of conduct calls into question whether he should continue to enjoy that privilege. NYRA is gathering the necessary facts to support a statement of charges and a formal administrative hearing to potentially suspend Mr. Potts from participating in racing at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. In the near term, NYRA is determining immediate options such as revoking his stall allotment at Belmont Park.”

Chispita has not raced since running for a $7,500 claiming price in that Aug. 6 race.

Potts told Daily Racing Form's David Grening he intends to appeal the New Jersey suspension. Grening also reported Potts told him Chispita is “turned out on a farm.”

The Paulick Report was subsequently contacted by Florida horsewoman Julie Ramgeet, who said she facilitated the private sale of Chispita from trainer David Fawkes to Potts last year. Ramgeet, who said her policy is to follow up on all horses she sells after their racing careers end, said Chispita has been retired from racing and is serving as a riding horse for a young person.

Speightster Filly Impresses at Oaklawn

9th-Oaklawn, $84,000, Msw, 1-23, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:10.83, ft, 3 3/4 lengths.
HOT AND SULTRY (f, 3, Speightster–Hot Water, by Medaglia d'Oro) burst out of the gate at Oaklawn Sunday with her mind on running and never looked back, toying with the field for a facile 3 3/4-length score. The dark bay was sent as the 8-5 choice and kept a narrow advantage through :21.97 and :46.21 splits. She changed leads on cue coming off the turn, batted off her rivals, and drew clear in the stretch, easing up late as Little Mombo (Into Mischief), who had gotten within a head two furlongs from home, chased her to the wire. Her final time of 1:10.83 for the six furlongs was significantly faster than the earlier division on the card, won by Peace Peddler (Gun Runner) in a similar trip, by the identical margin, in a final time of 1:11.73. Hot and Sultry came into the race with the highest previous Beyer–77–in the field, earned in her Dec. 18, runner-up debut over track and trip. Peace Peddler had finished third to her in that joint debut. A half to Tracksmith (Street Sense), SW & GSP, $282,133; Hot and Sultry claims as her third dam 2001 champion 3-year-old filly and GISW Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat). The winner's dam, Hot Water, has a 2-year-old colt by Runhappy that brought $7,000 at Keeneland September from Adco Farms and a yearling filly by Omaha Beach that hammered to The Elkstone Group for $160,000 at Keeneland November. Gulfstream Park: Wednesday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Has $500,000 Guarantee

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $500,000 for Wednesday's nine-race program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

First race post time is 12:30 p.m. ET.

Multiple tickets with all six winners were sold Sunday, each worth $3,806.06. The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for eight consecutive racing days since a $159,442.38 payout Jan. 13.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Wednesday's Rainbow 6 spans Races 4-9.

Who's Hot: Jockey Junior Alvarado visited the circle twice Sunday, with Six Feet Apart ($3.40) in Race 1 and Lucago ($5) in Race 8. Jockey Paco Lopez also doubled aboard Yeguita Queen ($12.20) in Race 3 and Phantom Vision ($13.40) in Race 9. Trainer David Fawkes saddled two winners, Riveting Spirit ($10) in Race 5 and Doctor Ron ($10) in Race 10.

Leading Maryland Trainer Claudio Gonzalez Dipping Toes Into South Florida Waters

Claudio Gonzalez, Maryland's overall leading trainer by wins the past five years, is overseeing a string of horses in South Florida for the first time during Gulfstream Park's 2021-'22 Championship Meet in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Gonzalez, a 45-year-old native of Chile and cancer survivor, currently has eight horses at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream's satellite training facility in Palm Beach County. He brought his first group down Jan. 13 and saddled his first starter of the winter, Magic Stable's I'm Listening, in Saturday's third race.

An 8-year-old New Jersey-bred mare, I'm Listening finished third in the 1 1/16-mile claiming event over Gulfstream's Tapeta surface. Gonzalez said the addition of the all-weather surface was a major factor in coming to Florida.

“I have some horses that I believe will like it, that's why I wanted to be here. The weather is great. The winter is tough in the north because of the weather,” he said. “It gives you good options. In the winter, if you have horses for grass or you can try the Tapeta, it will be good.”

In addition to Palm Meadows, Gonzalez continues to maintain a full barn at Laurel Park with an additional string at historic Pimlico Race Course. He owns or shares 18 individual meet titles at the two tracks, sweeping all three full meets in 2021 and leading the state with 110 wins and more than $3.6 million in purse earnings.

“This was my first week here and I wanted to see how I can make it work better, to see what days I can be here and what days I can stay there,” Gonzalez said. “The good thing is I have good assistants in all three places, so I am confident in them.”

Gonzalez has led Maryland in annual wins since 2017, averaging 106.4 per season. He earned his 1,000th career victory with He's a Shooter Oct. 14 at Laurel and ended 2021 with a lifetime-best $5,323,750 in purse earnings to go along with 161 wins.

“Like I say all the time, if you don't have good help you're done,” he said. “When you have the right help and you're confident in everybody, everything is going to be good.”

Gonzalez's next runner at Gulfstream is Magic Stable's Sloe Gin Biz in a five-furlong claiming sprint over the Tapeta Thursday, Jan. 27. The 3-year-old gelding drew far outside Post 8 and is third choice on the morning line at 4-1.

“We're going little by little, step by step. We'll come and take a look at the condition book and see what we have here,” Gonzalez said. “It's not easy here. It's tough to win races anywhere, but here they come from everywhere. But, we're very excited to try.”
