Arrogate Sires First Stakes Winner at Gulfstream

The late Arrogate (Unbridled's Song)'s freshman season finished strong with a pair of good-looking winners on Friday, and on Saturday he was represented by his first black-type winner at the same venue at which he dominated the inaugural GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational almost five years ago.

Alittleloveandluck was sixth in her grassy debut at Saratoga Aug. 29, and seventh after showing the way at Belmont a few weeks later. She improved to third when switched to dirt and outfitted with blinkers at Parx Oct. 18, and broke through by a nose over a next-out graduate in a state-bred event on the local Tapeta Nov. 12.

Well held to sit in the pocket around the first bend, the grey was shuffled back slightly on to the backside as they crawled along. Trapped behind a wall of rivals spinning for home, she was guided far outside by Paco Lopez, and while she spotted her competition some real estate with that move, she leveled off powerfully to inhale Ocean Safari in the waning stages.

The well-bred winner's dam was purchased for just $30,000 in foal to Into Mischief at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale–one year before her daughter Victory to Victory (Exchange Rate) would take the GI Natalma S. en route to champion 2-year-old filly honors in Canada. Points of Grace, winner of the 2009 GII Dance Smartly S., also on the Woodbine turf, produced a colt and filly, respectively, by Tapit in 2020 and 2021. The former fetched $250,000 from Donato Lanni at the most recent Keeneland September sale.

Promising Upstart Filly Stays Perfect at Gulfstream

Kathleen O. (Upstart), a $275,000 OBSAPR breezer (:21 1/5), went last to first to graduate by a head in a key race featuring a pair of next-out winners in the Aqueduct mud going seven furlongs on debut Nov. 12.

In no hurry after a very slow start from her inside draw in Saturday's Cash Run S. at Gulfstream, Kathleen O. raced in sixth through sharp fractions of :22.74 and :44.94, and finally entered the frame with a flashy, sweeping move approaching the quarter pole. She set her sights on the top two while three wide at the top of the stretch and kept on rolling impressively down the lane to win for fun. She becomes the sixth black-type winner for Upstart.

Kathleen O's Grade III-placed third dam Pretty 'n Smart (Beau Genius) produced GISW freshman sire Cupid (Tapit); GSW Ashley's Kitty (Tale of the Cat); and GSW Heart Ashley (Lion Heart), whose daughter Ameristralia (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) is responsible for GII Chandelier S. heroine Ain't Easy (Into Mischief).

Quaver is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Tapwrit named Tap Collector ($65,000 OBSOCT yearling), a yearling filly by the same sire and was most recently covered by the 2017 GI Belmont S. hero. Quaver brought $140,000 from Lev Miller at the 2021 KEENOV sale.

Dilger Scholarship Foundation Places Another Student for ’22 Breeding Season

The Gerry Dilger Scholarship Foundation has granted one more scholarship for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, allowing University of Limerick student and Cashel, County Tipperary native Luke Kevin to travel from Ireland and work at Lane's End Farm.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation for giving me this great opportunity to work and learn in the U.S.,” said Kevin, a third-year student in the Equine Science program who has gained prior experience at Ballysheehan, Martinstown and Ballinalard Studs.

“On behalf of the board I would like to thank Lane's End Farm for their generosity in accommodating Luke for the 2022 season,” said Erin Dilger. “We feel that he is a very deserving young person who will enjoy his Kentucky experience.”
