Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Jan. 8, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The first weekend of racing for the new year takes place at Chukyo and Nakayama, featuring a pair of Group 3 tests over a mile for newly turned 3-year-olds and each featuring one American-bred. Those horses will appear in Saturday's TDN, in the meantime, here are the runners of interest for Saturday's programs:

MASCHIETTA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Star Billing, by Dynaformer) is the second foal to make the races for her dam, upset winner of the 2011 GI Matriarch S. for owner/breeder George Krikorian and subsequently purchased by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm for $2.3 million in foal to Giant's Causeway at Keeneland November in 2013. Also from the same female family as MGISW Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and Krikorian's MGISW Starrer (Dynaformer), Maschietta cost $180K at KEESEP in 2020. B-Mt Brilliant Broodmares II LLC (KY)

7th-CKO, ¥14,250,000 ($123k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
JU TARO (c, 3, Arrogate–Bodacious Babe, by Mineshaft) made an enormous impression in his Nov. 13 debut at Hanshin, bounding clear through the Hanshin stretch to break his maiden on the bridle by a dozen lengths (see below, gate 9). The colt's dam, runner-up in the 2017 GIII Sugar Swirl S., was among the first mares covered by Arrogate in 2018 and was hammered down to Juddmonte subsidiary Breffni Farm for $350K at KEENOV later that year. Bodacious Babe is a half-sister to GISW Sippican Harbor (Orb). B-Breffni Farm (KY)

9th-NKY, ¥19,530,000 ($169k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
Like Ju Taro, JASPER GREAT (c, 3, Arrogate–Shop Again, by Wild Again) provided his late sire with a wide-margin maiden winner, graduating by 10 lengths at Hanshin Oct. 9 (see below, gate 2). The $200K Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase graduate was part of the Breeders' Cup team sent over by trainer Hideyuki Mori, but he never factored after a slow start and finished better than 14 lengths behind Corniche (Quality Road) with a fair bit of pari-mutuel support. A half-brother to GISW Power Broker (Pulpit) and SW Fierce Boots (Tiznow), Jasper Great is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to GISW Miss Shop (Deputy Minister). B-Jamm Ltd (KY)

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Four Tracks, Two Turf Races, 12-Percent Takeout

Over the course of approximately one hour, Friday's Stronach 5 will feature races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields, a low 12-percent takeout, full fields, and two turf races.

The action begins at 4:28 ET.

Laurel's ninth race, a $10,000 claimer at seven furlongs, starts the Stronach 5. The wide-open field of 14 fillies and mares includes Bellswillberinging from the barn of Gary Contessa. The daughter of Mosler drops in class. Icy Harbor, part of a Dove Houghton-trained entry, shortens in distance after finishing ninth on a muddy track. His previous race over a fast track produced a third-place finish. El Bochinche enters off a second-place finish for trainer John Robb.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the second leg, Santa Anita's third race. The 1 1/8-mile turf event for 4-year-olds and up for $25,0000 claimers has an 8-5 favorite in Keystone Field. The Richard Mandella-trained gelding drops in class after finishing fourth, beaten two lengths, in allowance conditions at Del Mar. The second-place finisher in that race came back to win under allowance conditions. Stage Ready goes out second off a $40,000 claim for trainer Jeff Mullins. John Velazquez is named to ride. Graded stakes winner Cleopatra's Strike, who has five seconds at the distance in seven starts, seeks his first win since the 2019 John Henry Turf (G2).

Gulfstream's ninth race, a $62,500 allowance optional claimer at 6 ½ furlongs for 4-year-olds and up, drew a field of nine including Shadwell Stable's Mutasaabeq, who will make his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher in a year. The Into Mischief colt won the Bourbon (G2) on the turf as a juvenile before going to the sidelines after winning the Mucho Macho Man in his only start as a 3-year-old. Luis Saez has the call. Bank On Shea will make his first start at Gulfstream after winning restricted races for New York breds at two and four. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides for Carlos David.

Golden Gate's third race will serve as the fourth leg of the Stronach 5. The six-furlong claiming event for 4-year-olds and up drew a field of seven with a 2-1 favorite in Mohawk King, an Irish-bred who drops in class and gets blinkers for trainer Simon Callaghan. Mohawk King finished fifth in his last start behind Freeport Joe, who has won two consecutive races including the Berkeley Handicap (G3). Mohawk King will likely be joined on the lead or as part of the pace by Knockout Bert, who has finished in the money in seven of nine starts at Golden Gate. Foster Boi goes for his fifth win at Golden Gate in eight starts.

Gulfstream's 10th race concludes the Stronach 5. The one-mile turf event, a maiden optional claimer for 4-year-olds and up, has a 5-2 favorite in Eagle Chief, who breaks from the rail after being claimed by Paradise Farms Corp and trainer Mike Maker for $50,000 at Del Mar in November. Eagle Chief, a son of Into Mischief, is winless in 11 starts. Tyler Gaffalione rides. Golden Indy, fifth in his debut Dec. 16 for trainer Jonathan Thomas, returns with Paco Lopez in the saddle.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Sky Racing World Announces Historic Merger Of U.S., Argentinian Wagering Pools

Sky Racing World is excited to announce a substantial boost to its content portfolio of International Racing by facilitating the International commingling of wagering pools with host pools in Argentina on racing at Palermo Racetrack, Buenos Aires. On Monday, Jan. 3, the commingling of pools was made available for the first time ever on Argentinian horse racing from the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo for the American, Canadian, Caribbean and other International markets. PGI (owned by Tabcorp) is the exclusive International Commingling hub for connecting into Palermo pools.

Simulcast is now available for all Palermo meetings on the SRW website, ADW websites, and the SRW App. The races will take place every Monday, including a mix of races on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday with first post at approximately 3 PM EST. This exciting news is all possible thanks to the work done by the Board and Management of Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo and their work with the government to pass legislation that allows international commingling. The Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo is home to some time-honored events, like the Estrellas Classic, Gran Premio Selección and the Gran Premio Nacional (The Argentine Derby) which started back in 1884.

American and Argentinian breeding have a rich connection that goes back many years. A great example of this is Pure Prize, a Grade 2 winner who sired Grade 1 performers in both countries. In total, Pure Prize has sired 13 crops of racing age and combined progeny earnings of nearly $75 million. He's not alone, as other great stallions Blue Prize and Hi Happy were bred in Argentina before moving north to win major races there. More recently, we saw Gouverneur Morris move over to Argentina when sold, after being a hopeful for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

The Meadowlands To Begin 2022 With Pair Of 15-Race Programs

The year 2021 may have been challenging for society, but business at The Meadowlands was extraordinary while providing horseplayers a diversion from the pandemic.

This Friday (Jan. 7), The Big M will kick off what it hopes to be another big year with the first of two 15-race programs that get underway at 6:20 p.m. Racing will be conducted on a Friday-Saturday basis for the next 31 weeks. In addition, there will be racing on three Thursdays during that span (June 30, July 7 and Aug. 4).

“Winter is normally a good time for us with some of the closer tracks dark for the next few months,” said track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “Our entry box got great support from horsemen wanting to get their horses raced, so much so that we are able to present 30 races this first weekend of 2022.”

The action should be sizable to start the year, if the final program of 2021 is any indication. Last Friday (Dec. 31), wagering on the 14-race card totaled $2.97 million, which nudged action for the year just past the $276-million mark for the 92 racing programs, meaning that the mile oval's average handle per card was a remarkable $3 million.

“We all know how tough 2021 was on all of us,” said Settlemoir. “But we were grateful to be able to conduct our races and be as successful as we were while keeping our horsemen, staff, and customers safe. Moving forward, with Covid numbers on the rise, we will be taking some precautions to keep our co-workers and guests safe and healthy for the New Year.”

Until further notice, face masks must be worn by staff and guests, regardless of vaccination status, in the grandstand as well as the FanDuel Sportsbook.
