Equine Mix-Up: BHA Fines Trainer Over Purchase Mistake At Tattersalls

The British Horseracing Authority has fined Newmarket-based trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy £750 (US$1,020) over a mix-up in his sales purchase at Tattersalls, reports the Racing Post.

De Foy purchased a horse he believed to be Il Pescatore at Tattersalls in August of 2021, but when trying to enter him in a race at Chelmsford in September, it was discovered that the horse did not match Il Pescatore's passport. An investigation found that Il Pescatore and Alpine Sierra were inadvertently switched when sold by previous owners Moyglare Stud at Tattersalls.

The real Il Pascatore was transported to De Foy's facility, and Alpine Sierra was sent through the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale in October.

“I should have checked the horse and I accepted the fine that was given to me by the BHA,” De Foy told the Racing Post. “Tatts was very straightforward and they paid for Alpine Sierra while he was stabled with me before the sale. The BHA has been very easy to deal with too.”

Cordero Out as Franco’s Agent

Manny Franco, who has been among the winningest riders on the tough NYRA circuit for the last several years, has fired his agent, Hall of Famer Angel Cordero Jr.

“It's true,” Cordero said Tuesday by text. “There's no problem. He just wants to do better. I don't blame him. Everybody wants to be No. 1.”

In 2020, Cordero was also dismissed by Hall of Famer John Velazquez after working as his agent for 22 years. Cordero, 79, is still the agent for apprentice Jose Gomez. He has not yet found a journeyman rider to replace Franco.

Cordero and Franco, 27, enjoyed much success together.     Franco attended the jockey school in his native Puerto Rico and began his career at Camarero Racetrack in 2013 and shifted to the New York tracks later that year. In 2019, he picked up the mount on Tiz the Law (Constitution) and would win four graded stakes with the New York-bred, including the 2020 GI Belmont S. and the 2020 GI Runhappy Travers S.

“I'm just happy to have him on my side,” Franco said of Cordero in a 2020 interview with the Daily Racing Form's David Grening. “He's been in this position before. He always talks to me about how to handle this time, and I'm just blessed to have him in my corner.”

Franco, who has always stayed in New York year-round, won 183 races at the NYRA tracks in 2021, finishing just behind Jose Ortiz and Irad Ortiz Jr. Franco was NYRA's leading rider in 2018 and 2019 with a combined 456 wins, but he is off to a slow start at the current Aqueduct meet. With 13 wins from 94 mounts, he is tied for fourth place in the standings.

As far as his future as an agent, Cordero was understandably downcast Tuesday.

“I've got the bug boy, Jose Gomez,” he texted. “I'll see what happens there until he fires me, too. It's ok. I'm used to it.”

Franco did not return a phone call seeking comment. Cordero said he was not aware who Franco had hired to replace him.

First Foal for HOTY Authentic

Spendthrift Farm's Authentic (Into Mischief-Flawless, by Mr. Greeley), winner of the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders' Cup Classic in 2020, was represented by his first reported foal at Taylor Made Farm Sunday. He is set to stand his second season at stud in 2022 for a fee of $70,000 S&N.

The colt is out of Streak of Luck, who was purchased for $620,000 at the Keeneland November sale last fall while carrying the colt. She was one of eight mares in foal to the 2020 Horse of the Year that sold for half a million dollars or more.

“This is a really nice foal out of a maiden mare. Correct, nice body, good angles, athletic looking and healthy. We are very happy,” said Taylor Made's Frank Taylor.

In 2021, he covered 229 mares from a first book that yielded a 3.06 Comparable Index.

Online Poker Cheats: Beware Of Internet Players Cheating Via Collusion

Almost every poker player has run into a cheater at one time or another. Cheaters usually have little or no skill at the game, but are very good at manipulating the cards to their advantage, and at giving themselves unfair advantages over honest players. Where honest players spend their time learning all they can about the game, cheaters spend their time honing their cheating skills, and looking for new cheats to learn. They make minimal effort to advance their game in honest ways.

The method that is easiest for the cheater is collusion. It is very hard to catch a player in the cheat of collusion, and it is next to impossible to prove. Collusion occurs when two or more poker players will secretly work together at the same poker table. They usually plan to merge and split their winnings once the game is over, thereby often enabling them to double their winnings. There is little skill necessary on the part of the cheater to be able to pull this off. Collusion does pose a large threat to the other players at the table.

Players that are in collusion may do several different things to help each other during the game. They may get together beforehand and decide that one of them will distract the other players at the table, so that the other, who will probably be the next dealer, may stack the deck in their favor.

When players are acting together in collusion, one player may flash their hand so that the other player can see it. This lets the other player know what cards that player has, so that they can help them in anyway possible to win the hand.

Occasionally, the players in collusion may speak a different language than the other players at the table. They will use this to their advantage, as they can discuss the game without the other players becoming too suspicious of their actions. This may also be used as a method of distraction, getting the other players to lose focus on their games, in turn giving the players in collusion further advantage.

Sometimes, players that are in collusion will have signals they secretly give each other during the game. Other players most likely will not recognize the signals for what they are. They may use signals to let the other player know how strong their hand is, or they may also use signals when placing bets.

Sandwiching occurs when the only players left at the table are the two that are in collusion, and one presumably honest player. It is to the benefit of the cheaters to bet back and forth with each other, which will force the other player to see their bets or fold. Cheaters will use this to make their pot bigger, so that they will have more earnings to split at the end of the game. If the colluders place maximum bets, the other player will usually be bullied out of the game.
