GSW Rushie to Pleasant Acres Stallions

Rushie (Liam's Map–Conquest Angel, by Colonel Jonh), winner of the GII Pat Day Mile, arrived at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Ocala, Florida, where he will stand the 2022 season. The deal was brokered by Jacob West.

“We are very pleased to have Rushie join our roster of exceptional stallions in Florida. Right now, there are only three stallions by Liam's Map being offered to breeders in 2022–two are standing in Kentucky at Spendthrift and Airdrie Stud, and Rushie is here at Pleasant Acres Stallions,” said Joe Barbazon. “Being able to expand the Liam's Map bloodline to our Florida breeders is very exciting!”

Conquest Angel, a $300,000 OBS April 2-year-old in training purchase, is from the family of Grade I-winning Peace at War.

Report: Manny Franco, Angel Cordero Part Ways

Jockey Manny Franco and agent Angel Cordero, Jr. have parted ways, reports the Thoroughbred Daily News.

“There's no problem,” Cordero, 79, told the TDN. “He just wants to do better. I don't blame him. Everybody wants to be No. 1.”

The New York-based Franco won 252 and 221 races in 2018 and 2019, respectively, but his numbers dropped to 140 in 2020 (when New York racing was shut down for several months due to the pandemic) and 184 in 2021.

Cordero, himself a Hall of Fame rider, still represents apprentice rider Jose Gomez. The agent split with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez in 2020.

California Workers’ Comp Program Launching Mandatory Exercise Rider Certification Exam

Exercise riders in California will need to pass a certification test by March 31 in order to remain eligible for the industry's Post Time workers' compensation program, reports Dan Ross in the Thoroughbred Daily News. Trainers with Post Time insurance will only be able to employ certified exercise riders after that date.

The exam is based on the British National Racing College's jockey fitness test, and consists of seven exercises encompassing upper body, lower body, and cardiovascular exercises, according to TDN. Post Time will give exercise riders a 30-day membership to a 24-Hour Fitness gym to train for the exam, if they so choose.

“Our goal is not to reduce exercise riders, it's to do with reducing the injuries that are a part of their occupation,” Michael Lyon, Post Time's program administrator, told the TDN. “It's our first blush at it, so, there's going to be hiccups and bumps in the road, but we'll handle those as they come. We just want to make the work exercise riders do safer for them.”

Post Time has three funding sources: a stall-per-day fee of $5.10, a per-start fee of $162, and 0.5 percent of money placed on exotic wagers.

The group has seen a 30 percent reduction in claims since May of 2020, due to the implementation of a “Director of Safety” position, which is responsible for establishing and regulating uniform safety standards across California facilities. However, Lyon said that exercise riders account for 40 percent of claims and yet 70 percent of costs, with one policy-limit claim in each of the last three years.

Puerto Rico: New Regulations For Transporting Horses By Cargo Ship Go Into Effect March 28

The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission has approved a new set of regulations for transport Thoroughbreds via cargo ship which will go into effect on March 28, according to bloodhorse.com.

The regulations include rules additional stall space, proper ventilation, a transportation attendant, and a first aid kit. Violators risk their access to Camarero Racetrack, ability to register the horses, and a fine of $2,500 per horse. Repeat offenders could have racing licenses revoked.

Cargo ship transportation for the three-day journey came under scrutiny in 2019 when eight horses died in transit and one was euthanized upon arrival in Puerto Rico. Several U.S. racing jurisdictions issued warnings in late 2021-including the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, Penn National Gaming, The Stronach Group, Indiana Grand, Florida HBPA, and New York Thoroughbred Breeders-threatening action against licensees allowing their horses to be transported via cargo ship due to welfare concerns.
