Andy Serling to be Honored by NY Chaplaincy

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy will honor Andy Serling for his work with the backstretch community at its 15th annual fundraising brunch, to be held Aug. 17 at Saratoga National Golf Club during the Saratoga meet. Serling is best known as a television analyst and handicapper for New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), where he has been a member of the broadcast team since 2008. He is also the senior racing analyst on America's Day at the Races, which presents coverage of NYRA racing on the networks of FOX Sports, and as the host of NYRA's daily handicapping show Talking Horses. Serling has also hosted the Across the Board podcast since 2017.

“I love this sport and with each passing day, I have a deeper appreciation for the commitment and dedication of backstretch workers,” Serling said. “The New York Race Track Chaplaincy does incredible work for our community and I'm humbled to be honored in this way.”

The NY Chaplaincy serves New York's backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, recreational, and educational programming, as well as with non-denominational religious services.

“At every opportunity, Andy goes out of his way to recognize and advocate for the members of the backstretch community and he richly deserves this honor,” said Humberto Chavez, the lead chaplain and executive director of the NY Chaplaincy.

Previous honorees have included Anne Campbell, Edgar Prado, Michael Dubb, Fay and David Donk, Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, Letty and Kiaran McLaughlin, Lisa and Kenny Troutt, Debbie and Terry Finley, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. The honoree is presented with a print by equine artist Tom Chapman at the brunch. ‘A Big, Attractive Colt’ Is First Foal For Lane’s End Stallion Gift Box

Grade 1 winner and three-time graded stakes winner Gift Box's first foal arrived January 19, 2022 at St. Simon Place.

The colt, bred by St. Simon Place and Machmer Hall, is out of Chelsea Road (Speightstown – Lambert Point, by Charismatic) who was the top priced mare purchased at the Keeneland November Sale for the sire.

Tommy Wente said of the foal, “He's a big attractive colt. I'm very pleased. (He's) got great leg and substance and a very kind eye.”

Carrie Brogden added, “He looks just like his father did as a baby.”

Gift Box (also bred by Machmer Hall) broke his maiden at Belmont Park with an impressive 93 Beyer and went on to become the highest-earning colt of leading sire Twirling Candy. The stallion comes from a strong female family, whose siblings include Stonetastic, Special Forces and Gina Romantica.

Gift Box stands for $10,000.

Last Two Living Descendants Of Secretariat Celebrate Birthdays

Secretariat had more than 650 registered foals when he died, the last group born in 1990. Today, there are two living Secretariat offspring: 34-year-old Border Run and 33-year-old Trusted Company, both of whom celebrated birthdays on Jan. 1, reports Thoroughbred Racing Commentary.

Border Run is out of Crimson Saint and a full brother to Terlingua, the dam of Storm Cat. He sold for $650,000 as a yearling in 1988. He raced 41 times.

Now owned by Curtis Wright, Border Run spends his time turned out at a Washington Farm and is spoiled with bananas, mints, carrots and cookies. Though the gelding has some issues getting up from naps, he still eats with gusto.

Trusted Company resides at Bright Futures Farm, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)-accredited sanctuary. The mare, out of Star Snoop, was born in 1989 and is the dam of Shatzi, who raced and was a broodmare in Peru. She had two foals of note: Pacatan and Lady Shatzi; both of whom won stakes races in Peru. Lady Shatzi was Peru's 2009 Horse of the Year.

Though Company battles arthritis, she is still able to run in the pasture and boss around her field mate, Catch This T, a 29-year-old gelding. “Company” receives twice weekly PEMF (pulsing electromagnetic field) treatments and an anti-inflammatory tablet each day to ease her aching joints.
