TCA Stallion Auction Set for January

Thoroughbred Charities of America's 32nd annual Stallion Season Auction will begin Jan. 5 and conclude Jan. 9. The fundraiser opens with an online auction of stallion seasons at 9 a.m. Jan. 5 and continues through 4:30 p.m. EST Jan. 7. Over 150 seasons will be available in the online auction, including to stallions Audible, Basin, Candy Ride, McKinzie, More Than Ready, Speightstown, and Volatile. A full list of seasons is available here.

An online silent auction of non-season items, including halters worn by Life is Good, Curlin, Charlatan, Tapit, Knicks Go and more will be offered. A list of silent auction items is available here.

Most of the seasons will sell during the online auction, however, select seasons to Bolt d'Oro, Charlatan, City of Light, Constitution, Liam's Map, Maxfield (with 2023 breed back), Nyquist (with 2023 breed back), Quality Road, and Yaupon (with 2023 breed back) will be sold at the 'Tis the Seasons Celebration Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Grand Reserve in Lexington. Bidders or their authorized agents may bid on select seasons by attending the event in-person or they may email ecrady@tca.org to register to bid online.

Non-season items, including a John Deere Gator, accommodations at the Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa “tree house,” a wall box and stall webbing from Charlie Whittingham's barn, and more will also be offered in the live auction.

The fundraiser opens with an online auction of stallion seasons at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5 and continues through 4:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Jan. 7. Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) was formed in 1990 to raise and distribute funds to approved charities in the Thoroughbred industry. TCA's mission is to fund and facilitate the support of Thoroughbreds and the people who care for them. In 2021, TCA granted over $775,000 to 69 approved charities working within Thoroughbred retraining, rehoming and retirement; backstretch and farm worker services, research and equine-assisted therapy. During the last three decades, TCA has granted over $25 million to more than 200 charities that successfully meet the criteria set forth in its annual grant application. TCA administers the Horses First Fund, founded by LNJ Foxwoods in 2016, to assist Thoroughbreds in need of emergency aid. TCA manages Cómo, a mobile app founded by Godolphin, that connects racing industry employees to the vital services they need through a network of racetrack chaplains and Thoroughbred industry organizations. Asmussen Wins 17th Remington Title

Steve Asmussen captured his 17th Remington Park training title–and sixth in a row–while Danny Caldwell won the owner's title for the second consecutive time and 12th time overall when the Oklahoma track concluded its season last Friday.

“I'm obviously very blessed to have had all the opportunities I've had a Remington Park and I'm very thankful,” Asmussen said. “Pablo [Ocampo] has been with me to handle all the horses and he deserves a lot of the credit.”

Caldwell is Remington Park's all-time winningest owner.

“I'm proud to say this is my home track,” Caldwell said. “It's a privilege to race here. It's hard to win races anywhere, but especially at Remington Park.”

Hidden Connection Back To Work For 3-Year-Old Campaign

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies participant Hidden Connection put in her first work since a fourth-place finish at Del Mar on Nov. 5, reports The Blood-Horse. The daughter of Connect is preparing to start her 3-year-old campaign after working three furlongs at Fair Grounds Race Course in :36 ⅘ on Dec. 19.

Hidden Connection, trained by W. Bret Calhoun, will be pointing towards the Kentucky Oaks prep races at either Fair Grounds or Oaklawn Park. Owned by Hidden Brook Farm and Black Type Thoroughbreds, the filly recently returned to Calhoun's stable after a break in Ocala, Fla.

“She looks like she's doing well. We just tried to give her an easy breeze today, we weren't wanting to go quite that quick,” Calhoun said to The Blood-Horse. “She's very willing, and obviously, she has a pretty high cruising speed. It was pretty easy for her today what she did. We had her under a pretty snug hold, that's what she did, and things went very well.”

Hidden Connection made her career debut a winning one by 7 ½ lengths at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., on Aug. 17. The filly returned to the winner's circle on Sept.18 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., finishing 9 ¼ lengths ahead of her competition in the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes. After winning at Churchill, Hidden Connection shipped to Del Mar for the Breeders' Cup where she finished fourth after stumbling at the start.
