Aqueduct Plagued By Timing Issues, Malfunctioning Photo Finish Technology On Dec. 2 Card

An equipment malfunction during Aqueduct's sixth race on Dec. 2 left stewards to determine the order of finish by video. The starter allowance race was won by Electric Youth at odds of 10-1 over Chloe Rose, but after a delay, third place was determined to be a dead heat between Thegoddessofsnakes and Rosey's Peach. No photo of the third place finish was shown after the official placings, and evidently one does not exist.

“NYRA is reviewing the circumstances that prevented the creation of a photo finish image of today's 6th race at Aqueduct Racetrack,” said Pat McKenna, senior director of communications for the New York Racing Association, in a statement. “In the absence of that image, the placing judges reviewed the finish by utilizing the enhanced video replay system available to the stewards. Under the rules of racing in New York State, the placing judges have sole discretion in determining the order of finish, which was 5-2-1,8 (DH).”

According to the race's chart, finish margins were collected manually by the chartcaller “due to an issue by Teletimer with the photo.”

Elsewhere on the race card, times were unavailable for the eighth race due to an unspecified timing issue noted in the chart. The quarter-mile time for the ninth race was also unavailable due to a timing issue.

Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: The Bryony Frost-Robbie Dunne Case

The British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary hearing of jumps jockey Robbie Dunne for prejudicial conduct and verbal abuse toward fellow rider Bryony Frost is the subject of this week's Friday Show.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills leads the discussion, with editor in chief Natalie Voss and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth offering their thoughts on the case in which Dunne has been accused of using abusive, physically threatening and misogynistic language against Frost on multiple occasions.

Frost, 26, is Britain's most successful female jockey. By bringing to the BHA the complaint against Dunne – whose tirades were said to be witnessed by others – Frost said she has felt abandoned and isolated by fellow riders, saying, “I wouldn't wish it on anyone.” She also testified that the culture within horse racing makes it difficult for anyone to file complaints against others.

Dunne faces up to a three-year ban if found guilty of the charges against him.

Three CDI-Brokered Simo Signals Return to Nevada

An impasse whose origin dates back more than two years that has prevented Nevada race books from taking betting on three simulcasting signals controlled by Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI), was reportedly resolved on Wednesday, although it remains unclear which side budged or what changed in the negotiations.

Mike Brunker of the Las Vegas Review-Journal broke the story Dec. 1.

Three signed contracts for the Fair Grounds, Turfway Park and Oaklawn Park that were suddenly offered by CDI were inked into agreement on Wednesday by the Nevada Pari-Mutuel Association, which represents the state's race books. The documents then got forwarded to the state Gaming Control Board for approval, an expected formality.

“The dispute, which arose when Churchill Downs sought to charge more for its simulcast signal, has prevented fans in Nevada from wagering on races from the home of the [GI] Kentucky Derby since Oct. 27, 2019,” Brunker reported.

Brunker also wrote that the other tracks' signals had been withheld as part of an escalation of that initial dispute over the Churchill signal. CDI owns both the Fair Grounds and Turfway, while Oaklawn contracts with CDI for its signal distribution.

“The contracts received Wednesday do not resolve the underlying dispute over the Churchill Downs signal,” Brunker wrote. “But Patty Jones, executive director of the pari-mutuel association, described the development as 'positive movement' toward a long-term simulcasting agreement with the company.”
