JDG: Who Gets The Rossi Horses?

Around 200 horses formerly trained by Frederic, Cedric and Charley Rossi will need to be relocated from their Calas training stable in Marseille after their indictment Thursday, when a judge in Aix-en-Provence banned the three from any participation or presence in racing and training for the duration of the indictment. The Jour de Galop reports in their Saturday edition that some decisions on the futures of those horses have already been made.

The three Rossis, along with a veterinarian, a stable manager, and Charley's wife Jessica Marcialis, a jockey, were brought in after a two-month investigation into possible race-fixing and doping in their operation, based at the Calas training centre in Marseille, France.

The most famous and successful in question is Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), the winner of the G1 QIPCO Champion S. who may be pointed to the Saudi Cup next, and will go to an as-yet-to-be determined trainer in Chantilly, Kamel Chehboub told the JDG. Skazino (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), second in the G1 Prix Royal Oak, will stay in Marseille, but will be shifted to trainer Richard Chotard, the JDG reports. They quote Jean-Claude Seroul as saying his three fillies with Frederic Rossi are on their way to Jerome Reynier. Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) the winner of the G3 Prix Miesque for Franco-American basketball star Tony Parker, will head to Mikel Delzangles at Chantilly, the JDG reports. Miguel Castro Megias has five horses with Charley Rossi, all of which will go to Chantilly at the end of the week, also to an undetermined trainer, the paper says, while they report that Michel Delaunay, who has 10 horses with Charley Rossi, has not yet made a decision on where his horses will go.

Ten horses were seized during the raid, and the JDG asked the Aix-en-Provence court what might happen to them, and was told that their owners may request their return from the investigating judge in the case.

The event was hosted by equuip, Horse Racing Ireland's education and training department, and brought together many elements of the learning community in the racing and breeding industry.

Minister Harris and Minster Heydon met students, apprentices and graduates from a host of industry learning centres such as equuip, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), RACE-Racing Academy and Centre of Education, the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA), the Irish National Stud, the Farrier School, Together for Racing International (TFRI), Godolphin Flying Start Thoroughbred industry leadership programme, Agri Aware and Teagasc.

Harris said: “I was so delighted to visit The Curragh and hear from a range of stakeholders across the horse racing industry. We know how vital this industry is to Ireland and we need to showcase what we have here to the world.

“I was also so delighted to see Horse Racing Ireland partnering with our Further Education Sector to ensure that they have the skills they need in the industry. These industry collaborations are vital to ensuring apprenticeship can provide a real and substantive career pathway, with the ability to learn and earn, knowing that you will also receive a recognised qualification. Apprentice Maclovio Enriquez Jr. Has Wild Ride At Mountaineer Park

Horseplayers got their money's worth from apprentice jockey Maclovio Enriquez Jr. in the third race at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia on Dec. 8.

Breaking from the No. 2 post aboard Baytown Valleygirl in the six-furlong allowance contest, Enriquez lost his irons when his mount appeared to hit the side of the gate while hopping in the air at the start.

The 11-10 second choice in the field of five, Baytown Valleygirl gradually moved to the lead in the run down the backstretch, with track announcer Peter Berry worrying that Enriquez might not have full control of his mount going into the far turn.

But Enriquez not only kept his balance without use of the irons, he kept Baytown Valleygirl in contention for the win down to the final sixteenth of a mile, switching his riding crop from left to right hand and persevering to the wire despite his predicament.

In the end, Baytown Valleygirl wound up fourth, beaten a neck for third, drawing praise from track announcer Berry.

Enriquez had already impressed horseplayers, winning 10 races in his first 73 starts. After finishing off the board with his first two mounts, Enriquez scored two victories from three chances on Nov. 7. He scored another riding double Nov. 16 and again on Dec. 7, the night before his wild ride.
