Photo Finish Gives Principe Carlo Victory Over Positivity In Cary Grant

In a tight photo finish with three horses bidding for the win, Principe Carlo got the nod in the Cary Grant Stakes for California breds, the longshot springing the upset at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

The field of seven broke in a line, with Colt Fiction showing a head in front first before Fashionably Fast took the lead coming out of the chute. Sprinting out to a short lead, Fashionably Fast had Positivity and Colt Fiction pressing the pace down the backstretch. Around the far turn, jockey Kent Desormeaux angled Principe Carlo to the outside, going four-wide into the stretch with Fashionably Fast, Positivity, and Colt Fiction to his inside.

Down the Del Mar stretch, Fashionably Fast could not hold on to the lead, with Positivity, Colt Fiction, and Principe Carlo coming on to his outside, vying for the lead. Colt Fiction took a short lead midstretch, but Positivity to his inside and Principe Carlo on the outside battled back. The three hit the wire together, a photo finish necessary to determine the winner. In the end, Principe Carlo got the bob, winning by a nose over Positivity, with Colt Fiction a neck back in third. None Above the Law, Peaceful Transfer, Fashionably Fast, and Loud Mouth rounded out the order of finish.

Principe Carlo paid $39.00, $14.00, and $7.00. Positivity paid $4.60 and $3.40. Colt Fiction paid $3.40.

“I knew I'd won it. (Up by a nose in the last jump.) No special instructions for me. Just ride him. The track has been playing better on the outside today so I broke from the 7 and stayed out there the whole race. The horse ran great. He got it done,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said after the Cary Grant.

“My first stakes win anywhere. The horse has a heart of gold and it has been a team effort. We gave him some time off (a year after claiming from Keith Desormeauux in October of 2020) and that's all he needed. This means a lot. All I needed was a chance and people here and at Santa Anita have been very good in giving it to me,” trainer Librado Barocio told the Del Mar press office after the race.

Bred in California by Richard Barton Enterprises, Principe Carlo is by Coil out of the Rahy mare Princess Ezra (GB). The 5-year-old horse is owned by Mia Familia Racing Stable. Principe Carlo was a $4,000 RNA consigned by McCarthy Bloodstock at the 2018 Barretts Equine Limited Spring Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. His win in the Cary Grant Stakes is the 5-year-old's first in two starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 22-7-7-0 and career earnings of $367,543.

Keeneland Art Auction Grosses $1.9 Million

The ninth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington held Sunday afternoon at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion, grossed $1,908,015.

Topping the auction was Andre Pater's War and Peace, a pair of signed and dated pastels, sold for $115,000, including buyer premium.

Fishing on the Elkhorn, a signed oil by Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier, brought the second-highest price of $100,050.

Keeneland's portion of the auction proceeds will benefit its non-profit initiatives.

Saffie Joseph Jr. Sets His Sights On Winning Gulfstream Championship Meet Training Title

After adding the inaugural Fall Meet title to his ever-growing list of accomplishments at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is setting his sights on the upcoming 2021-2022 Championship Meet.

Joseph, whose 36 victories during the fall more than doubled the total of nearest competitor Jorge Delgado, finished second behind perennial leader Todd Pletcher during last season's Championship Meet, eight wins behind the Hall of Famer's total of 58 wins.

“The Championship Meet is Todd's meet. Last year, we were pretty close, but we didn't have as many horses as we have this year. I think we can give him a run for his money,” Joseph said. “He's a legend at Gulfstream. What is it, 15, 16, 17 years? We hope to follow in his footsteps and one day take a run at him. Will it be this year, next year, or the future? I think with the horses were getting and with so many owners supporting us, I think it's possible.”

The 34-year-old Barbados native has long been a fan of the newly inducted Hall of Famer, who has captured 18 consecutive Championship Meet titles.

“I grew up coming here from Barbados on holiday when I was 16, 17, seeing Todd. I would just bet Todd and Johnny V [Velazquez]. That was my favorite combination,” Joseph said. “Just being able to compete against him – he's an icon trainer – I'm just thankful to be in this position.”

Joseph understands he, alone, can't dethrone the longstanding king of Gulfstream.

“I'm just thankful for the horses we have for the people we train for. We have a good team. That's the important thing – you need the horses and a good team behind you,” Joseph said.

Joseph did get the better of Pletcher Sunday when he saddled Girolamo's Attack ($4.20) for a front-running victory in the $60,000 Miami Gardens Handicap. Pletcher-trained Fearless, who captured the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Mile in February, finished second while coming off a six-month layoff.

Jockey Edgard Zayas, who dominated the Fall Meet title race with 43 wins, once again enjoyed success while teaming with Joseph Sunday while guiding Girolamo's Attack to victory in the mile overnight handicap, in which he carried five pounds fewer than Fearless, the 125-pound highweight.

Girolamo's Attack, who captured the Oct. 27 Miami Beach Handicap in similar fashion, set fractions of :24.12 for the first quarter and :46.57 for the first half mile before holding off Fearless through the stretch to win by a length in 1:34.50.

“His last race was a huge race, but I wasn't sure if because the fractions were so slow, he kicked on and got brave. But today, he definitely showed he's getting better and getting to be a nice horse,” Zayas said. “Early in this horse's career, he had some mental problems. He was a little crazy, but I think he's getting it all together. Today, he acted super professional.”

Fresh off a dominant Spring/Summer Meet title campaign, the 28-year-old native of Puerto Rico finished with 14 wins more than runner-up Chantal Sutherland.

“I'm really happy and blessed. I'm really appreciative of all the opportunities I get from the owners and trainers,” Zayas said. “The quality of horses in South Florida this time of year is getting better, and I've been getting on some nice horses. Hopefully, there are some big things coming up.”

Zayas finished fifth in wins and purses-won during the 2020-2021 Championship Meet and looks forward to the upcoming winter meet that gets underway Dec. 3.

“It's definitely a new challenge. We did pretty good last year. We finished in the Top 5. I'm looking forward to the Championship Meet. I'm super, super excited,” Zayas said.

Zayas and Joseph also teamed for a victory with Designed for Kitten ($6.40) in the Fall Meet's finale.

In Sunday's co-featured Opa-Locka, a mile overnight handicap for fillies and mares, Helping Lisa D ($9.40) pulled off a mild upset following a ground-saving ride by Paco Lopez. The Steven Dwoskin-trained 6-year-old daughter of Flat Out, rated well off the early pace set by 8-5 favorite Dance d'Oro before rallying along the rail to score by 1 ½ lengths in 1:36.50.

Friday’s Pick 6 At Aqueduct Boosted By $73,574 Carryover

Friday's Pick 6 will be bolstered by a $73,574 carryover as the multi-race wager went unsolved on Sunday at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $1,021.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Sunday's sequence kicked off in Race 5 with Goodnight Olive [No. 6, $2.60] posting an impressive maiden score under meet-leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. for meet-leading trainer Chad Brown. Goodnight Olive was the first of three winning favorites in the sequence.

Sterling Silver [No. 11, $36.40], with Trevor McCarthy up for Tom Albertrani, upset Race 6 – a six-furlong state-bred maiden sprint which was followed by Miss J McKay [No. 1, $15.20], piloted by Dylan Davis for Christophe Clement, overtaking Gotta Go Mo to capture a six-furlong allowance optional-claiming tilt in Race 7 over the outer turf.

Public Information [No. 1, $7.50] scored as the lukewarm choice in Race 8, a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance over the inner turf, under a sharp ride by Luis Saez for trainer Mike Maker. Classy Edition [No. 6, $3.90] kept her perfect record intact with a wide-rallying score in Race 9, the Key Cents, a six-furlong sprint for state-bred juvenile fillies. Ortiz, Jr. engineered the confident score aboard the mutuel favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

With only four horses covered in the finale, Race 10, – Partner's Hope [No. 2], My Boy Colton [No. 6], Boom Boom Kaboom [No. 9] and Rogers Ginger [No. 10] – it was 20-1 longshot Chase the Cat [No. 12, $42.80], who took the lead at the stretch call and staved off Partner's Hope by a half-length to secure the carryover. Benjamin Hernandez piloted the winner for trainer Gary Sciacca.

Friday's Pick 6 kicks off in Race 5 at 1:45 p.m. Eastern and will include the $150,000 Gio Ponti at 1 1/16-miles on turf for sophomores and the Grade 3, $200,000 Comely at nine furlongs on the main track for sophomore fillies. First post on the 10-race card is 11:50 a.m.
