National Museum Of Racing And Hall of Fame’s Third Annual Photo Finish Exhibition Opens Friday

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's 3rd annual Photo Finish: Juried Photography Exhibition will open in the Museum's von Stade Gallery on Friday in conjunction with Breeders' Cup weekend. Since its inception, the Museum's juried photography exhibition program has received submissions from photographers hailing from 27 states and three Canadian provinces.

This year's exhibition features 45 photographs by 34 photographers from 12 states. An additional 14 photographs will be included in the online exhibition as online-only entries, bringing the total representation of the 3rd annual Photo Finish exhibition to 14 states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin). The selected photographs document the entire racing experience, from the farm to the backstretch to the winner's circle, including several images that showcase how Covid-19 impacted the racing world in 2020. The online exhibition will be available on the Museum's website at: https://racingmuseum.org/exhibits/photo-finish-juried-photography-exhibition.

Each year, the Museum invites amateur and professional photographers to submit photographs for consideration. The only requirement is that each submitted photograph must relate to the sport of thoroughbred racing in North America. A panel of judges representing both the racing and arts communities selects the photographs for exhibition. This year's jurors included Louise Kerr (Executive Director, Saratoga Arts), Shannon Luce (Director of Communications, The Jockey Club), Skip Dickstein (Eclipse Award-winning photographer), Sally Jeffords (National Museum of Racing trustee, chair of the Collections & Exhibits Committee), and Cate Masterson (Director, National Museum of Racing).

The 3rd annual Photo Finish: Juried Photography Exhibition will remain on display through Feb. 20, 2022. The call for submissions for the 4th annual exhibition will be announced in early 2022.

NYRA Cares: NYRA Continues Support For Hope For The Warriors

Connecting with the organization Hope For The Warriors was the link that U.S.M.C. Staff Sergeant Ryan Anderson used “to regain my freedom,” as he put it.

In 2006, Staff Sergeant Anderson was diagnosed with PTSD and a mild Traumatic Brain Injury after being subjected to seven improvised explosive devices (IEDs) within a three-day span in Iraq. The injuries affected his ability to speak and eventually left him nearly unable to walk.

Back home, Staff Sergeant Anderson connected with Hope For The Warriors in hopes of finding a way to remain active. Starting with a hand cycle donated by the organization and combined with intensive rehabilitation and the support of his family, Staff Sergeant Anderson is now a marathon runner and working toward a dual master's degree in business administration and finance.

Welcome to another success story from Hope For The Warriors, the North Carolina-based organization that supports post 9/11 service members, veterans and military families in transitioning back to the civilian world. It's because of the inspiring story of Staff Sergeant Anderson and hundreds of others that the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) is continuing its support of Hope For The Warriors.

To honor the organization and to commemorate Veterans Day, which is next Thursday, Nov. 11, NYRA and owner Harold Lerner are each donating $5,000 to Hope For The Warriors. The donations match those of previous years when NYRA and Mr. Lerner, a U.S. Army veteran, honored service members on Veterans Day.

“NYRA is proud to partner once again with Hope For The Warriors, an organization that provides much needed services to our veterans in the New York City area and around the country,” said NYRA's Manager of Community Relations Vanessa Rodriguez Payne. “Their work is absolutely crucial to helping post-9/11 veterans and military families regain their footing and thrive.”

United by Honor and Sacrifice

Hope For The Warriors calls itself, “a family, united by our shared conviction of honor and sacrifice.” It was founded in 2006 by military families aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, who witnessed firsthand what war does to service members and their families. The organization offers comprehensive support, health and wellness programs as diverse as the people it serves.

Its Warrior's Compass program provides comprehensive Transition Services for veterans starting new careers and opportunities for employers to find qualified candidates among service members, military spouses and veterans. That takes in everything from job training to candidate matching, mentoring, resume building and access to 1,500-plus companies looking to hire veterans.

The organization's scholarship program provides aid in continuing education at accredited universities, colleges or trade schools. And in cases where a veteran or family member is hesitant to seek mental health care treatment within their community or from the VA, a clinical team from Hope For The Warriors team provides short-term, stop-gap supportive services that engage the veteran or family in seeking treatment close to home.

Elsewhere, Hope For The Warriors' stability grant program provides short-term financial assistance when a veteran or service member is struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Still another program, Resilient Warrior, helps military members and families develop helpful coping tools to combat stress and become more resilient.

Staff Sergeant Anderson is thankful for those services. As a runner, the father of five now trains up to six days a week with an average of 18 to 20 miles, and has completed both the Boston and the Marine Corps marathons. And he is grateful that after his injury, he again has hope.

“It just means so much because Hope For The Warriors has given me so much after my injury,” Staff Sergeant Anderson said. “They've helped me get started from a hand cycle, all the way up to now I'm running marathons. I just couldn't do it without them. This organization has helped me to feel normal again, and I cannot thank them enough for everything that they do.”

Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Cosmonaut Dies; Was Pensioned At Old Friends At Cabin Creek

Multiple graded stakes winner and pensioned New York stallion Cosmonaut was humanely euthanized Oct. 29 at Cornell Equine Hospital due to complications from surgery. The gray son of Lemon Drop Kid was 19.

Retired from stud to Old Friends at Cabin Creek in May of 2018, Cosmonaut was a hard-trying turf specialist, winning or finishing on the board in nine graded stakes races over five seasons of racing.

Bred in Kentucky by Patricia Pavlish, Cosmonaut was purchased as a yearling by trainer Carlos Martin for Flying Zee Stable. He broke his maiden at Saratoga in his 3-year-old season before finishing second in the Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs later that year. Shipping west to the barn of Patrick Biancone the next year, he earned a pair of Grade 3 victories in the Golden Gate Fields Handicap in California and the Arlington Handicap at Arlington Race Course.

Cosmonaut's marquee season of racing came at 5, scoring another victory in the Arlington Handicap before finishing second by a neck to Purim in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.

His effort in the Shadwell earned him a chance at the Breeders' Cup Mile at Monmouth Park, where he finished third behind Kip Deville and Excellent Art after setting the pace over the soft going. After a second in the Grade 3 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs with Carlos Martin, he was transferred to the barn of Phil Serpe, where he remained until the end of his racing career.

Under the care of Serpe, Cosmonaut earned victories in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Handicap at Belmont Park and the Tampa Bay Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, as well as placings in two more Arlington Handicaps. He retired in 2009 after a fourth in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga Race Course, wrapping up his career with eight wins and 11 other in-the-money finishes from 36 starts and $1,397,723 in earnings.

Entering stud in 2010 at Lynwood and Suzie O'Cain's Highcliff Farm, Cosmonaut was a useful sire in New York and also stood at Mill Creek Farm, Saratoga Stud, and Keane Stud throughout his breeding career.

From seven crops of foals, he sired 45 winners with total progeny earnings of over $4 million. His top runners include Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks winner Wonderment, Grade 2 placed Selenite and Marvin's Miracle, and stakes winners Kreesie and Goodbye Brockley.

“Cosmonaut was a wonderful ole guy and loved his peaceful life being an ambassador for aftercare, but mainly loved his alfalfa,” Old Friends at Cabin Creek owner and manager JoAnn Pepper said in a tweet October 29. “We miss him so much already. They never get to stay long enough.”

New Claiborne Stallion Performer Dies

Claiborne announced Monday that multiple graded stakes winner Performer (Speightstown–Protesting, by A.P. Indy) has passed away. He was sent to the clinic Friday night and died early Saturday morning from a ruptured stomach.

Performer, from the family of champions Storm Flag Flying and Personal Ensign, was slated to begin his first year at stud in 2022 at historic Claiborne Farm. Bred by the Phipps Stable, Performer was never off the board in nine starts and earned over $420,000 racing in the colors of the Phipps and Claiborne Farm.

He will be buried in the Marchmont cemetery at Claiborne Farm.
