Empire Maker ‘Rising Star’ Rallies Into Fast Pace to Take Bob Hope

Heavily-favored Messier sat off of a supersonic pace in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar and rallied to score going away in the end, giving Bob Baffert–who had three of the four starters–his 11th victory in the seven-furlong test for 2-year-old males.

Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism on debut June 27 at Los Alamitos, the $470,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling buy cruised to an easy 6 1/2-length graduation off a brief layoff Oct. 22 at Santa Anita to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors. Taking the bulk of the play here while removing blinkers, the bay broke smoothly but was out-footed by his three rivals early and sat at the back of the pack under Flavien Prat as the lone non-Baffert entry, Forbidden Kingdom showed the way through a scorching :21.40 half. Poking his head into third as the half went up in a blistering :43.23, he spun into the clear approaching the lane as the field started to condense. Forbidden Kingdom fought valiantly until around the eighth pole, but the early fractions took their toll and Messier took charge before kicking clear for a comfortable victory in the end.

“We were in a good spot,” said Prat. “There was plenty of pace in the race and that was to our advantage. When I asked, he was there. And I think this horse will be fine with running on.”

“Messier shipped down this morning. He didn't train here during the summer and had never been here,” added Baffert. “First time on a trailer, first time he'd seen Del Mar and he walked into the paddock like he owned it. The track is pretty glib so the fractions were fast. In the summer, 21 and [two] wouldn't hold up, but this time speed carries and they were rolling.”

Pedigree Notes:
With the win, Messier becomes the 67th stakes winner and 37th graded stakes winner for the late Empire Maker. He's the lone foal to race thus far out of his dam, who took back-to-back renewals of Woodbine's Trillium S. in 2014 and 2015. His third dam is Canadian champion Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold), who in turn produced a Canadian champion in Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy). Sold to Silesia Farm for $290,000 as part of the Sam-Son Farm dispersal at Keeneland January this year, Checkered Past foaled a Candy Ride (Arg) filly Feb. 7 before being bred to Authentic.

Beholder To Be Bred To Gun Runner In 2022

Three Chimneys announced today that future Hall of Famer Beholder will be bred to Leading Sire Gun Runner for the 2022 breeding season.

One of the greatest race mares of all time and the recipient of the coveted Eclipse Award four times – Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, and Champion Older Mare twice –  compiled a record of 18 wins and 6 seconds from 26 starts with career earnings of $6,156,600. The remarkable mare notched an unprecedented 10 Grade 1 wins and is one of only two mares in the history of the Breeders' Cup to win three times. A singular performer on the track, she boasts perhaps the most prominent pedigree currently in the stud book. She is a half-sister to both super sire Into Mischief as well as to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner and promising young sire Mendelssohn.

“Beholder is the crown jewel of an extraordinary book for Gun Runner. The whole Gun Runner team is excited and appreciative that she is coming. Three Chimneys will be rolling out the red carpet for her,” said Doug Cauthen, managing partner at Doug Cauthen Thoroughbred Management LLC., and Vice Chairman at Three Chimneys.

Horse of the Year Gun Runner is off to one of the most remarkable starts to a stud career in recent memory. He is the sire of 5 individual stakes winners. The undefeated and unchallenged Echo Zulu distinguished herself as the best of her generation compiling Grade 1 wins in the Spinaway, the Frizette, and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Gun Runner's other standout performers among his 20 first crop winners include G1 Hopeful Winner Gunite, G2 Best Pal winner, and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Pappacap, G2 Adirondack winner Wicked Halo, and stakes winner Concept.

Thursday’s Gulfstream Rainbow 6 Jackpot Guaranteed At $600,000

Thursday's 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $600,000 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where only four racing days remain in the inaugural fall meet.

The 2021-2022 Championship Meet will kick off Friday, Dec. 3.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved Sunday for the 20th racing day in a row following a $461,035.47 jackpot payoff Oct. 9.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Turf Festival At Del Mar Attracts Number of East Coast Trainers

The nomination deadline is not until Thursday night for the seven stakes races from Thanksgiving Thursday to closing day on Sunday, November 28, unofficially known as the “Turf Festival” at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

And New York-based trainer Chad Brown, who has shipped in nine winners from his deep bench of grass runners in the past, hasn't been heard from yet.

But several other prominent Midwest- and East Coast-based conditioners have, leading to expectations in the racing office of quality and quantity invaders for the main events on the Bing Crosby Season's final four days.

A sneak peek, with horse names being withheld until close of entries:

Hollywood Turf Cup, Friday, November 26th, Grade 2, $250,000, 1 ½ miles (turf), 3-year-olds and up: Trainer Mike Maker has placed five in nomination for a race Brad Cox won last year with Arklow.

Hollywood Derby, Saturday, November 27th, Grade 1, $400,000, 1 1/8 miles (turf), 3-year-olds: Wesley Ward, Dallas Stewart, Ken McPeek, Maker (2), Jack Sisterson (2), Graham Motion, and Gregory Sacco have nominees. Brown has won it three times, sending out Annals of Time (2016), Raging Bull (2018), and Domestic Spending last year.

Seabiscuit Handicap, Saturday, November 27th, Grade 2, $250,000, 1 1/16 miles (turf), 3-year-olds and up: One horse from Japan is listed while Maker has submitted two names and Motion one. Phil D'Amato has carried the locally-based trainer banner to wins with Midnight Storm (2015), Hunt (2017), and Count Again (2020). Add Richard Baltas' win with Next Shares in 2019 and this has been a good Festival race for the home team.

Jimmy Durante Stakes, Saturday, November 27, Grade 3, $100,000, 1 mile (turf), 2-year-old fillies: Maker and Motion (2) have nominees for an event dominated by shippers over the years. Brown-trained Fluffy Socks won last year. Mike Stidham won the two years before that and George Weaver, Motion, and Mark Casse have also scored in the seven editions at Del Mar.

Cecil B. DeMille Stakes, Sunday, November 28, Grade 3, $100,000, 1 mile (turf), 2-year-olds: Motion has an early nominee in an event that has been good for locals. Smooth Like Strait won for Mike McCarthy in 2019 and Beer Can Man for Mark Glatt last year. Both horses ran during the recent Breeders' Cup Week here.

Matriarch Stakes, Sunday, November 28, Grade 1, $400,000, 1 mile (turf), older fillies and mares: Trainer Joe Sharp has two nominated and Stidham one for the climactic stakes race of the meeting. Brown has shipped in three winners in seven meetings, among them Viadera in 2020.
