Too Much Of A Good Thing: Can A Horse Be Vaccinated Too Often?

When preparing for vaccinations, it's helpful to know what a horse has been vaccinated for in the past. If a horse's vaccination history is unknown, it's best to assume that he has not received any vaccinations at all and use the protocols designed for unvaccinated horses, which might include boosters of some vaccinations. Additional doses of most vaccinations will not harm a horse, reports EQUUS magazine.

The strangles vaccine is the one exception: it should not be given if a horse's vaccination history is unknown. In rare cases, horses that have had strangles before and those that have been repeatedly vaccinated for the disease may have a serious complication called purpura hemorrhagica if they are vaccinated again, according to Dr. David Horohov of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center in Lexington, Ky.

[Story Continues Below]

Purpura hemorrhagica is an immune reaction that causes the blood vessels in the head, legs, and abdomen to swell. This condition is painful for the horse as circulation is impaired. Horses with purpura hemorrhagica can be very depressed and it can take a long time for the swelling to abate. Purpura hemorrhagica can be fatal if it isn't treated effectively or in a timely manner.

Though the risk of purpura hemorrhagica is small, it's best to pull a strangles titer on a horse with an unknown history. The titer will show if a horse carries antibodies to Streptococcus equi. If he does show titers, he doesn't need to be vaccinated again.

Snowfall’s Brother Starts At Dundalk

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Today's Observations features a full-brother to multiple Classic scorer Snowfall (Jpn).

1.05 Nottingham, Mdn, £14,000, 2yo, c/g, 8f 75yT
KALAHARI PRINCE (IRE) (New Approach {Ire}) is one of five Godolphin representatives lining up for this “Golden Horn Maiden” won 12 months ago by Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), and one of a pair of Charlie Appleby-trained newcomers, with William Buick in the saddle. A half-brother to the listed scorer and dual Group 3-placed Duneflower (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the January-foaled chestnut is joined by the stable's Untold Mystery (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a half-brother to the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass).

5.00 Dundalk, Mdn, €14,000, 2yo, 7f (AWT)
NEWFOUNDLAND (IRE) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is the second foal out of Coolmore's G3 Give Thanks S. scorer Best In the World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose first turned out to be this May-foaled colt's sensational full-sister Snowfall (Jpn). With the connection to that G1 Epsom and Irish Oaks heroine and to Found (Ire), the Ballydoyle newcomer will probably need middle-distances in time unlike the Juddmonte debutante Trent (GB) (Kantharos), a Ger Lyons-trained fellow debutante who is out of a half to the G1 1000 Guineas winner Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy).

Modernist to Stand at Darby Dan

MGSW Modernist (Uncle Mo–Symbolic Gesture, by Bernardini) has been retired and will begin his new career as a stallion in 2022 at Darby Dan Farm in a deal brokered by Matt Bowling. He will stand for a fee of $10,000 S&N.

“We are excited to offer Modernist to breeders,” said Ryan Norton, stallion director at Darby Dan Farm. “He is a tremendously good-looking horse with a mind to match and hails from a strong and accomplished female family.”

A homebred for Martin and Pam Wygod trained by Bill Mott, Modernist retired with a record of 11-3-2-2 and earnings of $576,300. Following his third-out graduation with a win in last year's GII Risen Star S., the dark bay was off the board in his next two outings and was shelved for the season. Second in the GIII Challenger S. in his seasonal bow at Tampa Mar. 6, he won the GIII Excelsior S. at Aqueduct Apr. 3 and was second in the GIII Pimlico Special S. May 14. Modernist was last seen finishing sixth in the GIII Cornhusker H. July 2.

“He won at 1 1/8 miles in New York and progressed really well in the early part of his 3-year-old year,” Mott said about Modernist following the Risen Star victory. “He's become more mature and is professional about everything. He has plenty of stamina, as well as tactical speed. Disposition is so important in these kinds of races, and he has a lot of composure.”

Uncle Mo has proven himself as a sire of sires and Modernist also has a strong female line. His dam is a half to champion Sweet Catomine (Storm Cat) and MGISW Life is Sweet (Storm Cat).

Manning Suffers Broken Collarbone

Jockey Kevin Manning suffered a broken collarbone in a fall at Galway on Monday. The 54-year-old rider, whose regular mounts this season have included the Classic-winning Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) for his father-in-law Jim Bolger, sustained the injury when his mount, Dublin Journal (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), slipped up after a furlong of the Galway Handicap. Dublin Journal also races as a homebred for Bolger and his wife, Jackie.

“He's broken his collarbone, but it's a straight-forward break, so it shouldn't be too long,” said his agent Kevin O'Ryan. “Thankfully, everything else is OK.”
